Fuckdiculous MTGS Moderation

I just read an article talking about how society may have moved from proven fact to personal opinion/alternative facts. For example Shaq has come out and said that he be lives that the world is flat and not round and his personal opinion over rides proven fact. Another example of an alternative fact is that members of this site are cowards and scumbags who maliciously attack the city of New York in silent protest while having ghadaffi avatars.

I too feel this moderation was in very bad taste. To stifle the use of the word gay as an attack on other members is great - in fact, I was the person who started that rule, about a decade ago.
But to stifle (and punish) the use of the word gay when that is EXACTLY the correct description of the characters on the Magic card in question? That's homophobic!
I was punished in the "kings" thread for making a play on words using the word "butt", based on the creature having 8 toughness (commonly referred to as "butt"). A moderator claimed I had made a flame attack. Against who, a Magic card? All gay people? Of course not. The creature depicts gay men, and that's awesome. My brother would LOVE that card. And no, that's not a flame attack against my brother.
We should mature a little. It's 2016 and it's okay to be gay. It's even okay to correctly point out that a Magic character is gay, or use the word "butt". There's literally no harm to anyone.
The harm is when overzealous moderators stifle discussion and then attempt to cover up their poor decision by claiming "it's better to overmoderate than undermoderate". In this case, it was hurtful and wrong to moderate. An apology to the affected members (and the gay community) should be made.

The fact that this discussion is necessary is offensive to me.

Now I prefer in the future that the term "white" is also no longer used to describe certain qualities. I'm a white person myself and I wish to stress that I have in no way the lack of intelligence that gideon shows.
As such I would request the moderation team to censor the term "white" in conjuncture with gideon. - Just like we can't label "gay" at cards I wish for racial parts to also be removed from card mentioning here.

Why not let the jokes run its course, in a few days everyone ran out of these and we can continu business as usual?

This is a bull***** copout of staggering proportions. By that reasoning, I'd be derailing the Sidar Kondo thread by talking about how it's a cool callback to Mirage and Jamuraa. It's like the mods don't even know the rules to which they're supposed to abide. There's no consistency, just a bunch of "I don't like that, better lock it."

Perfectly fine and valid discussions are often censored or stifled because some mod needed to throw their weight around. We get it, you have authority over a website. We're all very impressed.

Fuckdiculous MTGS Moderation

Hi everyone,

I would like to open a discussion regarding the staff decision to stifle the use of "the gay kings" when describing Kyanios and Tiro of Meletis in response to some of the feedback and criticism we have received.

When the Kings were first spoiled a few days ago from the front of the C16 packaging, it was unclear what their names were, but it was obvious that they were the kings being depicted on Guardians of Meletis. Without a proper name, 'the gay kings' was quickly used because it was an apt description: they are kings, and they also happen to be gay. MTGS's stance on inappropriate language is that there are certain words which have offensive as well as inoffensive uses, and should be judged based on context. For example, "that man is gay", is acceptable (assuming it is a true statement), but "that deck is gay" would be against the rules. In this case, I acted as I did and ordered the staff to stop the use of this term for three reasons: the first was the context of the posts, or lack thereof. There is no question that it is true that the kings are gay, but by and large the majority of posts were devoid of context and the card was reduced to being just about the characters sexuality. Other posts were capitalizing on this and making jokes based on stereotypical traits of gay men. Secondly, but tied into the first concern I had, was the speed at which posts were being made due to the card having been newly spoiled. I acted fast, and the fastest way to react was to make a blanket request that the term not be used at all. Lastly, I was not trying to stop people from discussing their sexuality. I think it is great that WotC is so aware of the many different people who play this game and want their worlds to be an accurate reflection of the real world. My only intention was that the specific nickname not be used, just as we should not be acceptable of Alesha, Narset, or Teferi to be reduced to one aspect of their character when discussing their cards.

I realize that this comes off as heavy-handed moderation and for that I do apologize. But in the end, I feel that being slightly heavy-handed at times is preferable to being lax. One of the things I pride our site on is that we are (for the most part) more civilized than other sites where the moderation is minimal and users are free to be jerks to each other without repercussion.

As much as the data for users and visitors may say that the site is healthy, I can honestly tell you that it's anything but. I've been around here for a good while now and the site just isn't what it used to be when it comes to QUALITY interactive posting. The GP threads hardly even reach 2 pages anymore of people discussing, the threads for decks that aren't tier 1 go without feedback or interest, no really new contributions, the list goes on and on. If you used to post a deck in something like Standard Deck Creation and it got no replies then it would be on the second page within a day. As of now the oldest thread on the 1st page of Standard Deck Creation is May 7th, over a week ago. People aren't coming here to contribute to the community.

People may be lurking and reading, but people come to a forum based on content. What happens when the people who used to actually create that content to lurk on suddenly aren't involved anymore because it's a waste of time to contribute with no feedback and discussion? I have been playing a brew online that is different than any other Standard decks on here, and I've established a very good winning record with it but I don't post it. Why? Because it's a lot of work to post an in depth explanation of decks only to have people ignore them. Nobody is interested in these forums for anything other than what they can steal from the established tier 1 decks. That used to not be the case, and it's the reason this place is dying IMO.

The less talk could also come down to the outside of magic areas having less activity (especially WCT, Debate, and Clans) as well as the fact that we lost most of the gutter group over the last few years since we closed that down.

While I think it's fine to for MTGS to have a store (especially if it can keep those sound ads away), I have an issue with one of the Items that are for sale. The shop allows users to purchase an "unban". This undermines the integrity of the community. While some moderators are a bit zealous with how they dispense justice the moderation on this site is generally fair and effective. Allowing for unbans to be purchased not only allows toxic members to rejoin the forum and bring down the community as a whole. In addition it creates a conflict of interest for moderators. Revenue generated by "unban" purchases could result in pressure on moderators to ban users more frequently and with less discretion. I can't imagine $15 being worth undermining the integrity of the site and the community which supports it in the first place.

Staff Helpdesks

After much internal discussion, the staff has decided that individual staff helpdesks are no longer needed. The large majority of them either remain unused or are used for random chatter rather than their intended purpose. There is still a need for the helpdesk system, so each local moderation team has set up a subforum helpdesk, which you may have noticed. These helpdesks are where users should direct forum-specific questions, ideas, comments, criticisms, etc.

Because we recognize the need to approach the senior staff when needed, we are leaving the Global Moderator and Administrator helpdesks intact, as well as other staff members whose helpdesks we wish to remain visible.

Warp,

As a general rule, we do not ban accounts on request. Additionally, no action you have taken has merited a discretionary ban, merely the forum ban from rulings.

Warp has flamed via PM and has been discretionary banned.

Warp posted a message on ExpiredRascals' City of Brass

Just logged in to see if I have been completely banned as I requested. It seems not. Let me make it easier for you.

Let me remind you that I have done nothing more in the rulings forum than to ask questions about the game, and respond other people's questions about the game to the best of my abilities. This was such a serious crime that I was permanently banned. When I ask what exactly is wrong with anything I have done, the only answer is that it "breaks the rules".

Since your rules ban people who have only helped other people with completely on-topic posts, and since you seem to love your Holy Rules so much that they can never be questioned, changed or critiqued, here's what I suggest you do:

Print out your Holy Rules on paper. (I know, I know. Printers are so last-century. But I'm sure you can find one somewhere. If nothing else helps, then you could write the rules on paper by hand.) Then roll the rules into a cylindrical shape. Then apply some vaseline to them. Then push them into your anus. Screaming is optional, but recommended. It will really show how much you love your Holy Rules.

There. That's what I think of your Holy Rules. Is this enough to ban me completely? I can go on if you want.

The discussion is over.

Then just ban me for good. What use do I have with this account when I'm crippled by the admins, unable to ask questions and help others, even though I haven't done anything wrong, other than break your Holy Rules.

I have done nothing but contribute and help others, and your response to it is to ban me. If that's the case, then go to the logical end.

If you want, I can help you with that decision by filling this thread with cursewords. That would make your decision easier. You get rid of me for good. Just say it and I'll do it.
