Old Stuff
I've always prefered Spellbomb to Forewalker but I think I'm the only person in the world thst does! :)
Spellbomb is quite good, it hits a large ranges of targets: Mirror (anti-Kor tech), Robots, Merfolk, UB Infect and Control/Tempo.

- - -

I'm just thinking about upping the Palm count since its great in the Mirror (its basically just another Helix), Tron, Infect, Robots and random Midrange/death shadow builds.

- - -

Current list: (click here)

I learnt that Relic doesn't stop Vengeance this MU is feeling allot like Amulet where our win rate is horribly low. Might need to bite the bullet and run Grafdigger's Cage or Rest in Peace over relic.

Cards for thought:
Staggershock <-- Really good art, deals with pesky bears
Flame Javelin <-- Gets over Eidolon of the Great Revel, dodges some discard and can kill Sear

Refraction Trap <-- It can kill Kor Firewalker, gets around Eidolon of the Great Revel and its a 1cc Helix/Palm (though the main selling point is that it can kill Kor).

I like this 75 :) I may have to start playing Modern Leagues! :)
Watch next weeks video on Friday (your Thursday) I will be playing with Nathaniel Knox - 7th place GP Vancouver Burn list then.

Right now I think the relic is slightly overrated, I still dislike Kor Firewalker and I'm concerned about the rise of control.

MDU's RB Tinkering
Hi all - I'm currently working on Whole/Donald's Rakdos Burn list:

[deck=Whole's Rakdos Burn]Lands 19
2 Blood Crypt
2 Mountain
1 Stomping Ground
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Arid Mesa
4 Bloodstained Mire
2 Blackcleave Cliffs
4 Wooded Foothills

Creatures 17
4 Goblin Guide
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Vexing Devil
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
1 Grim Lavamancer

Spells 24
2 Searing Blaze
2 Shard Volley
4 Rift Bolt
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Bump in the Night
4 Gonti's Machinations

Sideboard 15
1 Grim Lavamancer
2 Searing Blaze
4 Skullcrack
4 Destructive Revelry
3 Fatal Push
1 Hit // Run[/deck]

- - - -

Here is my current version:

[deck]Rakdos Burn[/deck]

I tossed in Ensnaring Bridge as my random I-WIN-BUTTON.

So far netting 5-0, 4-1 and 4-1, the worst MUs seem to be combo and chalice.decks.

If anyone can recommend me some random cards for the Tron MU I'll be very happy.

Current changes I want to make -2x Blackcleave Cliffs for +1 Blood Crypt and 1 Stomping Ground, this will help the tron MU and allow for Bump in the Night flashback to be more possible in the grind games.

Ancient Grudge +1 (or two) to complement the 4x Destructive Revelry for the MUCH needed support vs chalice.decks... not sure what to cut for them yet though some suggestion would be nice.

[deck=MDU's Rakdos Burn]Lands 19
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Wooded Foothills
3 Blood Crypt
2 Mountain
2 Stomping Ground
2 Scalding Tarn

Creatures 17

Card for thought:

Bloodhand over command so that I don't need to fetch green against jund, blood was for the mirror and chord MUs.

Not sure if that matter anymore though since Jund can't compete with Eldrazi so running bloodhand isn't as effective - I think this had become a meta game where your either Eldrazi or anti Eldrazi, sadly I wouldn't say burn has a great MU with eye/temple pushing out extremely fast clocks (like T3 kills fast) and SSG into chalice slowing us down rather dramatically.

Anyone else noticing lots of Jeskai Tempo/Control/Kiki?

I went through two of them to get my 4-1 during the league (I lost to hatebears because I scared myself into keeping 5 lander... I was on the draw to be fair), I also faced them a number of times during SE events....

Anyhow here is my current list:

[deck=MDU's Boros Burn]Lands 20
4 Wooded Foothills
4 Bloodstained Mire
3 Mountain
3 Sacred Foundry
2 Arid Mesa
2 Stomping Ground
2 Scalding Tarn

Creatures 14
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide
4 Monastery Swiftspear
2 Grim Lavamancer

Spells 26
4 Lava Spike
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Rift Bolt
4 Lightning Helix
4 Skullcrack
4 Boros Charm
2 Searing Blaze

Sideboard 15
4 Destructive Revelry
3 Path to Exile
2 Deflecting Palm
2 Volcanic Fallout
2 Searing Blaze
1 Flames of the Blood Hand
1 Searing Blood [/deck]

The Bloodstained Mire are in the land count due to budget reasons (I don't have foil versions of the other fetches) I'm really considering swapping the 2nd Deflecting Palm for Pyrite Spellbomb so that I still have 8 sideout options for burn while also gaining another hard to counter spell for the URx Tempo MUs.

P.S. Sers thinking about running 10 fetches and upping my Sacred Foundry and Mountain count - this will help me in path and aggressive MUs and prevent hatebates from preventing my ability to play magic as easy.

Not a problem - I'll type something up by 2morrow (keep in mind I'm not 100% on my plan so I'll love to debate the choices).

With the raise of Eldrazi (which isn't a bye like some people assume) the ideal manabase should try and minimize the amount of Bloodstained Mire, Windswept Heath and Arid Mesa as possible to prevent them from ramping up as easy via W or B fetch lands (though I predict that B will outperform BW).

Currently Salty: Don't cha love it when RUG goes Huntmaster of the Fellsx2 (at least it isn't Baloth) then feastx2 + snap feastx2?

If his metagame is Robots and Chord/Company heavy then the Pyrite Spellbomb could be rather good (sometime Robots just steal wins via etch while Chord/Company love extra lands...).

Whole thoughts on VF vs Bridge? VF is decent against folk as well but its better for URx Tempo, Eldrazi and Chord lists.

I'm still debating shard vs 3rd helix (though in Boros burn, your not taking tons of damage or 3 makes sense) and 3rd kor vs helix/palm (mainly because I think kor is rather narrow).

- - - -

Tested 4x Leyline of Punishment <-- Its bad though I guess its kinda that should of been obvious, its not worth mulligan into since it isn't back breaking while casting late... well with 19 or 20 lands it tends to be to late (though I'm more in favor for running 2x leyline then 4x, it does give us a shot vs rather Proc, sisters and jeskai list).

I also think you guys are correct to move the deck more towards Boros then Naya, life totals seems to matter much more now (sadly).

- - - -

@Whole: Would you mind if I post a sideboard plan with your list here (so you can tell me what I'm doing wrong or debate alittle about choices)? or should that type of discussion remain in pm's until your event is over?

BREWING TIME!!

Here is an idea to target the more aggressive metascape:

[deck=MDU's Rg Burn]Lands 20
10 Mountain
4 Wooded Foothills
4 Scalding Tarn
2 Stomping Ground

Creatures 15
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide
4 Monastery Swiftspear
3 Spark Elemental

Spells 25
4 Searing Blaze
4 Skullcrack
2 Mutagenic Growth
3 Shard Volley
4 Lava Spike
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Rift Bolt

Sideboard 15
1 Become Immense
2 Volcanic Fallout
4 Flames of the Blood Hand
4 Destructive Revelry
2 Searing Blood
2 Pyrite Spellbomb[/deck]

Wooded Foothills and Scalding Tarn can't fetch for W or B which can be relevant vs Eldrazi

Mutagenic Growth is really powerful in a meta filled with Lighting Bolts

- - - - - - -

I'm really struggling against RUG Tempo (delver) with my Naya Burn list (1-2 now) - how are you guys fairing and how are you boarding against them?

I'm really starting to believe 2-3x Rest in Peace in the SB with Nacatl Burn maybe the place to be (though chord will be a nightmare).

Modern nexus early meta look:

Affinity: (12.5%)
Burn: (8.6%)
Abzan Company: (6.2%)
RG Tron: (5.5%)
Jund: (5.5%)
Merfolk: (5.5%)
Eldrazi: (5.5%)
Infect: (4.7%)
Elves: (3.1%)
Storm: (2.3%)
Death and Taxes: (2.3%)
Ad Nauseam: (2.3%)
Griselbrand: (2.3%)
Naya Company: (2.3%)

- - - - -

Looks like we have a large enough percentage to justify running one of my favorite burn spells again = Forked Bolt

P.S. If Abzan Company hits 10% I'm going to buy some Leylines of Punishments because that MU is rough.

- - - - -

People have been suggesting Rest in Peace as an effective tool against Kitchen Fink, Delve and Snapcaster decks - I'm still very against the idea mainly due to Decay being a very easy answer for the darn card (followed by Pulse and that annoying GW exalted artifact/enchantment hate guy).

- - - - -

I'm still on Nacatl Burn though I updated my land base into:

Lands 20
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Wooded Foothills
4 Sacred Foundry
2 Mountain
2 Arid Mesa
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Stomping Ground

To accommodate my heavy [mana]W[/mana] sideboard

I've been very impressed with Volcanic Fallout as of late, it does mean that I can't run as many (or any) Grim Lavamancers but getting around counter spells and taking out problematic creatures (while dealing damage) is quit useful.

I've been toying with the idea of running 1-2x Stormbreath Dragon's for the Jeskai Tempo/control, Naya and Junk company/call decks - my theory is that those game tend to go long enough with the life/anti life war we have going + the fact that they tend to path us enough to make 5cc a rather realistic goal.

Once resolve the SBD will kinda take over the game very quickly.

P.S. Bring me to Light is a rough MU for Nacatl Burn, how is the MU from the traditional burn stand point?

Ensnaring Bridges is really good for earning you automatic victories against Zoo and its ilk, it also outright beats reanimator (which will be the best combo deck post banning).

I think I need to observe the meta more before I judge the list but from what you told me about the American meta it seem solid.

Vs Tempo I would argue keeping the creatures in so that you can force removals and make Eidolon of the Great Revel that much more powerful against them. I think 1cc spells which can pressure them is more important then clunky 2cc lightning bolts.

- - - - -

Anyhow here is the list I will be running for next weeks videos:

[deck=MDU's Crouching Nacatl, Hidden Boros Burn]Lands 19
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Wooded Foothills
3 Sacred Foundry
2 Mountain
2 Arid Mesa
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Stomping Ground

Creatures 17
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Wild Nacatl
1 Grim Lavamancer

Spells 23
4 Boros Charm
4 Atarka's Command
2 Searing Blaze
2 Lighting Helix
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt

Sideboard 15
3 Path to Exile
3 Destructive Revelry
3 Kor Firewalker
2 Searing Blaze
2 Rending Volley
1 Deflecting Palm
1 Ancient Grudge[/deck]
PROS:
12 Fetches and no Copperline Gorge which allows for easier switches into Boros for SBíng and helps with Nacatl 3/3íng
2 Lightning Helixes

CONS:
No Copperline Gorge and only 1 Grim lavamancer making the Robot and Infect MU much more difficult (mainly Robots though).

- - - - -

Current Constructed Rating: 1856
Limited Rating: 1693 (yes I know its horrible, and its most likely only going to get worse since I only play limited against MOCS level Opp. where my limited skills in most likely beneath FNM level)

honestly I feel the gap between Firewalker and Helix is super small
While I don't think Helix or any 2cc instant spell really is what you want against Grixis Control - I do see its appeal vs midrange and aggro, I'm gonna try 4x Helix in the Sideboard over all my Firewalkers and Grudges (also gonna run the 4th Path - if I'm gonna run 4 PtE to any burn deck it would have to be this one).

Molten Rain is good in both those MU.

Skullcrack + Atarka's Command is good vs Jund/Junk.

I guess you could also run Relic of Progenitus and/or that 3cc burn spell which can't be countered which is decent in both these MUs.

Naya Burn or Jund Burn would have a much easier time here with all the spells - with Nacatl Burn you have a higher chance of hitting clumps of poor draws (creatures/bad spells/lands) and just losing once your in top-deck mode.

You guys both told me, though it should be noted that the online Meta doesn't (completely) reflect the American meta in major events and during other timezones

@Whole: Its either 10 fetches and 3 Copper or no Copper and 12+ fetches, with the American Meta as aggro as it is every life total counts (though I'll admit to casting 2/2 Nacatl more times then I would like.

- - - - - -

I'll be uploaded Nacatl Burn videos for the next two weeks with this list:

[deck=MDU's Nacatl Burn]Lands 20
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Wooded Foothills
3 Copperline Gorge
3 Sacred Foundry
2 Mountain
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Stomping Ground

Creatures 18
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide

4 Wild Nacatl

4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt

Sideboard 15
3 Path to Exile
3 Destructive Revelry
3 Kor Firewalker
2 Searing Blaze
2 Rending Volley

Then I'll most likely be going back to Naya burn again (or I'll try a 12 fetch Wild Cat version with 19 lands + 1/2 Helix...) :p

Another day, another MOCS....well the MOCS was posted on Dec 20, 2015 so I'm slightly late but hey its something ;-)

Top8:
Amulet Bloom x1
Robots x1
GB Infect x1
Nacatl burn x2
Abzan x3

Here are the two burn list:

[deck=_alice1986_'s Nacatl Burn]Lands 20

4 Bloodstained Mire
3 Copperline Gorge
2 Mountain
3 Sacred Foundry
2 Stomping Ground

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Searing Blaze

3 Molten Rain
3 Path to Exile
3 Relic of Progenitus[/deck]

[deck=ArcaCrema's Nacatl Burn]Lands 20

1 Searing Blaze
1 Deflecting Palm
3 Destructive Revelry
3 Kor Firewalker
2 Molten Rain
2 Path to Exile
1 Rending Volley
2 Skullcrack[/deck]

I find Alice's devilmaycare attitude against the mirror awesome :D though his SB seem uninspired (though its very mtgo grinder'isk in scope), both players went for the 10 fetch, 3 copper 2 RG shock, 2 WG shock + 2 Mountain approach and had some Molten Rains in the 75.

I'm not really fond of the Molten Rain approach with Nacatl Burn and strongly vouch for 3-4x PtE as the answer for Bloom (hell I'll run some vs tron), but the lands are same which I use so I won't complain about that.

I'm still on the old rules for mulligan's I know GoblinWarchief just mulls all 4-landers, I just personally think early scry isn't that powerful for aggro or burn decks.
MDU's Mulligan Rules
0 land = Mull
5 lands or more = Mull
4 lands without a creature = Mull
BTW you were right Whole, the American metagame IS aggro heavy: Grand-Prix: Pittsburgh 12-2 with a RW(g) deck with 4x Helix and 4x Blaze MD - he played 10 aggro/rocks decks, 1 twin deck, 1 mirror (finals where he goes firewalker crazy and dominates), he loses to every pure combo deck he faces (only two).

Sadly my Asian Pacific MTGO meta is just filled with Combo and U fans so I don't get to experience that metagame T_T.

@GoblinWarchief: I recommend MTGS for Modern discussions, they cycle lots of arguments but cycle arguments do have merits when meta changes occurs (reddit is excellent as well).

Rx Burn

I am not a fan of lists with the full set of guides, spears, nacatls, eidolons + some lavamancers for 2 reasons. The first and major one is that removal spells/big blockers become very good against you: as you said, rock/jund become even matchups and this is not a thing i am willing to accept. The second and minor one is that 18 creatures make swiftspear attack as a 1/2 too often for my taste
Very good reasoning (both true)

The heavy creature list also make UWR Control MU unwinnable (Walls, Fink, Snap, Helix and Angels mutes half the deck and with limited anti-life effects.... :gonk: ), Tron and Scapeshift also becomes MUCH harder since a well timed sweepers hurts allot more.

On the payoff it makes leylines, walkers and claws much weaker, drastically improves the Tempo MUs (Delver, Twins, Grixis Control) and Aggro MUs!!

I'll also argue that the Rock MU's arn't horrible mainly because burn is already strong against them (I just board out as many creatures as possible and fill my deck with spells post board, it seems to be working of far and this includes against top200 grinders).

P.S. I highly recommend adding GoblinWarchief into the FOS facebook group, I would argue that GoblinWarchief most likely has the most local major paper results with Modern Burn on DtR (+ he is awesome).

I kinda wanna stay up and play during your meta....

Since I started playing Nacatl burn I've been playing against lord Aggro (Merfolk) at least once in every event I've been in so far (only four :P), lots of combo, some aggro and grixis only once.

So far I like Nacatl burn but I don't think I'll take it into a MOCS or anything since goyf, fink and co really dampens the creature side so I prefer the more burn focus approach.

2 Grim Lavamancers vs 2 Lighting Helix in the Nacatl list vs a diverse metagame, what would you pick and why?

Hmmmmm.... PtE.decks are not THAT common so I can see the appeal in going 4th Foundries over the 2nd Mountain.

Thoughts on 12 fetches without Copperline Gorge vs 10 fetches with Copperline Gorge? One gives you higher chance of gaining [mana]WRG[/mana] while the other secures your life-total slightly better.

I'm leaning towards Copperline mainly because the Nacatl burn since doesn't really run any form of lifegain while it hasn't costed me any events yets I've now experienced 4 games where my Nacatl are just fang-less 2/2.

P.S. I havn't faced them yet with the Nacatl list but doesn't Rock become a rather bad MU with this version of burn?

I'm kinda tempted is trying out William Hawk's Sideboard except in Nacatl Burn soooo something like this (please note I would never recommend this SB in the non-nacatl list since you'll just gas out):

[deck=MDU's Nacatl Burn]Lands 20
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Wooded Foothills
3 Copperline Gorge
3 Sacred Foundry
2 Mountain
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Stomping Ground

Creatures 18
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Wild Nacatl
2 Grim Lavamancer

Spells 22
4 Boros Charm
4 Atarka's Command
2 Searing Blaze
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt

Sideboard 15
3 Path to Exile
3 Destructive Revelry
3 Kor Firewalker
2 Searing Blaze
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Rending Volley[/deck]

I like the idea of running answers to every match-up including the obscure one's like reanimate, storm or dredge even if it lowers your power slightly against some decks.

I kinda want the 4th Sacred Foundry so I can take slightly less damage when I naturally draw colours but running less then 10 fetches makes me uncomfortable.

P.S. The list I'm testing now has Palms and Skullcrack in the place of Rend and Progenitus, I do believe in larger events Twins and Rock has a larger showing which make rend and relic slightly more appealing.

Burn is already a bad matchup for Scapeshift so I don't see why you want to put more cards against them.
And for Bloom that would just slow them a little bit to their plan B with Pact.
I only mention Scapeshift since its an extra target beside Bloom (I'm starting to think landing Mr Middle Finger on Bloom and slowing them down to force a Plan B tends to be enough to make the MU much more winnable).

@Khaos: Yeah I meant WU Allies or WB tokens, pridemage.dot deck isn't friendly for bridge - in regards with blaze vs aggro, I do believe it helps but I still think its slightly in aggro's favour.

I started a facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010892254153 <-- I have no idea what I'm doing, is it possible to autolink Youtube with Facebook?

Burn vs Aggro: I actually think aggro (Zoo, Merfolk, WU or G stompy) is a poor MU for burn, its not a dominate part of the league (in accordance to goldfish) or 8Ms (during my timezone) thank goodness, but I'm ok with running 1-2 bridges just to autowin those MUs.

Grim + Delve: Of course you wouldn't run delve with grim, its just another option if your on the creature route.

Which one - Mandrills or Bridge?

Delve cards are great when your grinding out your opp. (removing creatures so that your horrid Nacatl can deal damage) while Bridge helps you when your running that control role (this is assuming your playing kill the creature.game).

P.S. I'm not seeing the heavy aggro meta are you guys playing league, daily or single elimination? - I think its a timezone thing

Sounds like the perfect metagame for fat delve creatures (like Hooting Mandrills) and Ensnaring Bridge.

Not a huge fan of the Nacatl list - though if the meta warp heavy enough into aggro where your forced into pointing everything at creatures I can see the appeal.

How did your metagame become so aggro heavy? Usually Jund and Combo thins the herds (aggro), which then gets thins by U (control and tempo) which gets thins by aggro....

I wouldn't bolt the dork unless I have eidolon in hand - I would rather point everything at face unless the dork play some sort of combo role which would kill me.

do the naya colors have any sweet sideboard tech for bloom? molten rain doesn't seem good enough :/
Path to Exile is the best answer burn has against Bloom (if they're not killing you in the first few turns, chances are your winning).

Nahh, Vexing Devil is just filler card (we don't really have enough 1cc 3 damage spells) - I think Eidolon of the Great Revel does just fine in the same slot.
