Needs Makindi Sliderunner. Card's sweet, and gives very few fucks about Hangarback Walkers.

@Jasper: Are you still testing Atarka or are you now focused on MonoR/Blue Splash?

- - - - -

Anyone get the chance to play against GW Constellation with MonoR? I played against it a few times online and just Token + Command / Immense them to death but it seem like its unwinnable from the MonoR side of things.
I think the Atarka's Command version will be pretty well positioned once the meta shifts to combat Mono Red. Talking about less sweepers, and more targeted removal. Also, Dromoka's Command numbers have increased at least locally in the Abzan decks because of Mono Red. Personally, I'm playing Mardu Dragons right now with a sideboard to beat PT Mono Red lists, and it's doing pretty well. Kolaghan's Command is pretty sweet at the moment.

Been throwing an idea around for splashing black in Mono Red lately. Moving back to token makers, and playing Foul-Tongue Shriek. Kolaghans Command in the sideboard for matchups like Abzan Control and RU Thopters. Bringing back an Abbot from the graveyard was pretty sweet in another deck I tested it in. Haven't given it enough serious thought for what other cards there are, but Tainted Remedy might be decent post board. Not sure.

Ran Pat Cox's list, had to mulligan a million times, and kept flooding out. Went 4-2, for 12th today. My sideboard was a little different, but not by a lot.

Thoughts:

Boarded out the Titans Strength every game. It's only real benefit to me was the scry 1 on my greedy 1 lander keeps, casting it on my upkeep.

Didn't like the 1-of Heelcutter, at all. Without FSD, it just doesn't push enough damage.

Flooded a lot. Playtesting buddy on the same 75 also flooded a lot. 2 Other players on a close Mono Red list flooded a lot. In one of the mirrors today, I opened my 7 game 1, and said something I had mentioned earlier in the day to my opponent. It's always either 1 land, or 5. He then shows me his 5 lander, and I show him my 1 lander.

Molten Vortex seemed good. Never had it resolve, but it seemed like it would have been great. Sided it in in the mirror, wish I had it there as well. Probably worth 2 sideboard slots. Hell, maybe even worth putting in the main.

Overall, the deck seems powerful, but I think it could be better. I'd like to see more testing done with Abbot in other shells. Perhaps a blue splash for cruise/Undoing, or a white splash for Chained to the Rocks/Deflecting Palm.

1-3. Won round 1, lost round 2 to Abzan with the nuts, lost round 3 to Temur bullshits from double stubborn denial, lost 4 to Temur bullshits.

1 loss, and im tossed into the Temur bracket. Lol. No real issues from the deck thus far, couple mulligans on zero landers. Just not my day.

How close do you think you are on the numbers? Glory Chaser tested extremely well for me in another list that i was testing. Generally got in 5 damage in a game if played turn 1. Walks right around Caryatids and shit.

Debating a last minute audible. My list has been testing very well, but you cant ignore the other lists results.

This is where I'm currently at. 4th Stoke may be too much without tokens, I'll figure that out today.

[deck]
Creatures 15
2 Zurgo Bellstriker
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Abbot of Keral Keep
3 Goblin Rabblemaster
2 Pia and Kirin Nalaar

Spells 24
3 Wild Slash
4 Searing Blood
4 Lightning Strike
4 Atarka's Command
4 Exquisite Firecraft
4 Stoke the Flames
1 Roast

Lands 21
4 Wooded Foothills
2 Mana Confluence
3 Temple of Abandon
11 Mountain
1 Forest

Sideboard 15
3 Roast
3 Satyr Firedancer
3 Outpost Siege
2 Destructive Revelry
1 Hornet Nest
1 Arc Lightning
2 Scab-Clan Berserker
[/deck]

I'm not sure why Pia and Kiran Nalaar isn't performing well for you guys, while it's been doing great for me. I'm just going to go with my gut on this one, and play it Saturday. Scab-Clan has tested really well so far against Abzan. That shit beats drown post board, and it's a pretty decent top deck.

Also, interesting find on Hareruya. Deck took 2nd place in the Last Sun 2015 Qualifier.

[deck]
Land 21
10 Mountain
1 Forest
4 Wooded Foothills
4 Temple of Abandon
2 Mana Confluence

Creature 17

3 Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh
3 Pia and Kiran Nalaar

4 Lightning Strike
2 Roast
2 Searing Blood
4 Exquisite Firecraft
2 Stoke the Flames

Sideboard 15
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel

Jasper, how was the singleton Roast in your main board? Worth it instead of the Stoke? Assuming your logic was cutting a Stoke for a Roast.

Even Scout seems better than Valley Dasher...
The singleton Roast has been fine, given that the two largest decks in the paper format are Abzan and GR Devotion. Being able to answer a Rhino/Polukranos with a single card regardless of play or draw is huge game. 4th Stoke is worth testing, but less token makers means less convoking, and casting 1 spell per turn can sometimes end in a loss.
Chandra's parents are good with Command too and work great with Stoke.

Maybe just the 4th Stoke and 3rd Searing Blood is better.

Would love to see your list. Testing Jaspers tonight for a few hours vs mostly jeskai.
Let me know how the testing goes. I only played against Jeskai Aggro once, but it seemed like a fine matchup.

Testing the last version of the list against Abzan Control in 10 pre-board games, and 10 post-board games, alternating play/draw, ended up with 11 wins and 9 losses yesterday. Seems pretty play/draw dependent. Too close to 50% more my tastes.

Updated list, based on testing vs Abzan Control and GR Devotion:

[deck]
Creatures 13
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Abbot of Keral Keep
3 Goblin Rabblemaster
2 Pia and Kirin Nalaar

Spells 26
2 Dragon Fodder
3 Wild Slash
4 Searing Blood
4 Lightning Strike
4 Atarka's Command
4 Exquisite Firecraft
3 Stoke the Flames
1 Roast
1 Become Immense

Lands 21
4 Wooded Foothills
2 Mana Confluence
3 Temple of Abandon
11 Mountain
1 Forest

Sideboard 13
3 Roast
3 Satyr Firedancer
3 Outpost Siege
2 Destructive Revelry
1 Hornet Nest
1 Arc Lightning
[/deck]

The only change made is adding 2 Searing Blood to the main to make the playset, cutting 1 Outburst and 1 Fodder, and swapping a Temple for a Confluence. Tested 7 game 1's against Abzan Control, ending with a 5:2 W/L ratio. Quite impressive. This is the same player I tested against before, and I believe he only changed 1 card in the main. Obviously needs more testing to see if its variance.

We did this after some discussion on the top decks in the format, which led to the revelation that Searing Blood is live in almost every matchup. Abzan Control plays Den Protector, and have added 2-3 Nissa's to the main. GR Devotion is playing dorks as always. UW Control and UB Control variants are running Thopter Spy Network and Hangarback Walker. It just makes sense to play 4 Searing Blood in the main right now.

3rd Temple seems absolutely fine.

This has freed up some sideboard room, and I'm not sure what changes I'll be testing tomorrow, but I'll be sure to post updates as the list evolves leading up to Saturday

Random notes from testing:
Boarding against Abzan Control, on the draw; -1 Become Immense, -3 Wild Slash, -2 Dragon Fodder, +3 Roast, +3 Outpost Siege. This has led to the best results thus far for me personally, but I'm open to suggestions. The Become Immense comes out because they bring in more spot removal and it's not worth getting blown out over. The Wild Slashes are kind of crap in this matchup. The Dragon Fodders just aren't that great here either. Roast is great vs Rhino/Tasigur, and the Siege is necessary to overwhelm them with CA while both players 1-for-1 in the turns pre-Elspeth.

How did the mana feel? Did you ever want to go up to a 4th confluence and drop a temple or anything?
Mana felt fine, and the Temples were actually pretty nice. I intended to run 3 Temples and 2 Confluence the morning of the event actually, but didn't have enough time to hit a vendor, slept in late.
Well Done!!

I really like the Pia and Kiran Nalaar, I'm not sure how I feel about Abbot of Keral Keep but you can get them for >1 tickets so I may go pick up a playset (I watch someone rip Stoke the Flames with Abbot while the opp. was on 4 only to be force to exile it while he proceeded to lose in the next two turns, I'm guessing the horror stories are rare? or you wait till you hit 5 lands).

EDIT: I'm going to virtually sleeve this up for tomorrow, it looks solid and I really need to get some hands on experience on Abbot (he just seems so risky).
Don't have any Abbot horror stories myself. Like others have said, just don't even worry about what card you're going to flip. Sometimes it draws you a card, sometimes it doesn't. I had to play them on turn 2 pretty often to apply pressure, and they do a VERY good job at trading up, or straight punking other creatures in combat.

[quote="magicdownunder » Mon Jul 27, 2015 9:00 am"

Well I built your deck after I found out that foil Abbot were selling for less then 1 ticket

I went 3-0 with it (well more like 2-0 and my third opp. never showed), I no longer hate Abbot but I still really don't understand the hype. So far I haven't experience any horror stories with him when it comes with exile but I didn't get anything good either, that said what I do like about Abbot is how well he trades with other cards .

Glad to hear it.
MDU, I have played close to 150 games with Abbot now, and the reward is often worth the risk. I have no issues running him out on t2 just to setup a big t3 atarks command attack, Granted I am playing a less token oriented build and one with more 1-drops. If you play him on t5, you can cast stoke off the reveal thanks to convoke, and flipping a Firecraft is literally like winning the lottery.

Jasper nice job on the finish let's talk about some of the cards.

How was rabble master for you?

Was the become immense necessary? Did it ever win you games you had no business winning?

Mana base - too many mana confluences?
Rabblemaster is still great vs Abzan Control, and Abzan Control is still a huge deck in the format. I also leave them in vs GR Devotion, which may be incorrect, but I haven't had it turn out badly yet.

Opp board state: 1 mana up, 2 Coursers, 1 Caryatid.

My board state: 1 Swiftspear, 1 Rabblemaster, 1 Satyr Firedancer.

I swing in with Swiftspear, Rabble, and 1 token. He blocks Rabble and Goblin Token. I searing Blood the Courser that block the Rabble, triggers and such, direct the 3 from Firedancer into the other Courser. Sweet sweet value.

Become Immense was only in my hand once, but was never cast. I could have played it for lethal on a Thopter token, but I was playing around Murderous cut. Ended up just stoking him when he was at 4 with 1 black mana up.

Mana Base - Perhaps. I'm going to test 1 more temple and 1 less confluence, since I intended it to be that way in the beginning. I didn't have any issues however. Multiple Temples are actually kind of nice. I keep a Hornet Token visible on top of the rest of my tokens, and when I play a Temple on 1, it really throws people for a loop when the follow up play next turn is a little red dude.

Played in the Standard Super Sunday series event today at GP Dallas. Went 7-0-1, the only undefeated deck from the swiss.

I put this together around 3:00am, taking various ideas from other red decks that day 2'ed the Open last weekend, and that one Japanese tournament. Also read a little around here. Had zero playtesting before I started round 1.

List:

[deck]
Creatures 13
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Abbot of Keral Keep
3 Goblin Rabblemaster
2 Pia and Kirin Nalaar

Spells 26
3 Dragon Fodder
1 Hordeling Outburst
3 Wild Slash
2 Searing Blood
4 Lightning Strike
4 Atarka's Command
4 Exquisite Firecraft
3 Stoke the Flames
1 Roast
1 Become Immense

Lands 21
4 Wooded Foothills
3 Mana Confluence
2 Temple of Abandon
11 Mountain
1 Forest

Sideboard 15
3 Roast
3 Satyr Firedancer
3 Outpost Siege
2 Searing Blood
2 Destructive Revelry
1 Hornet Nest
1 Arc Lightning
[/deck]

Opponents:
GB Elves, 2-1.
Abzan Ascendancy Tokens, 2-0. Decks bad.
Jeskai Aggro, 2-1.
GR Devotion, 2-1.
Abzan Control, 2-0.
Abzan Control, 2-1.
Abzan Control, 2-0
GR Devotion. ID'ed to guarantee my spot in top 4 for the top 8 draft. Played some test games, and won 2-0.

Abbot is the fucking truth, and Firedancer wrecks GR Devotion. I feel like this was the most powerful deck in the room, and will be playing it next weekend at states/regionals or whatever the hell they call it now. Need to test some more, and possibly make some minor changes, but overall, I loved it.
