[Ærticle] - If You Can't Take Criticism of Jeremy Hambly, You're Part of the Problem

If I was WoTC, I'd be a little bit worried that this drama took such proportions that Breitbart is taking a cue from it, trying to politicize the issue to further their own personal agenda.

[Ærticle] - If You Can't Take Criticism of Jeremy Hambly, You're Part of the Problem

As someone who knew nothing about this drama, I went around glancing some info here and there, and although I don't have the dossiers for the full story it seems a perfect cliché.

- On one side you have a female cosplayer that alledgedly quit MTG because of harassment from the guy, but then again she might be having a rough time due to personal issues, and was anyway quitting cosply because she was going to study nursery.

The Cliché: Hey give me some attention, I'm a girl who dresses sexy in an predominantly male environment of guys not used to social interactions, let alone with girls

- On the other side a guy who behaves like a dick on the internet, and his criticism might have been at best exposing the aforementioned cliché and at worse stalking and harassing the girl, amplificating any issues she might already have, ultimately convincing her to quit MTG for all

The Cliché: The guy looks just like FoS RedScrumper

So you then have the perfect match for a drama where SJW's on one side and Alt-righters on the other can find a brand new battlefield to exercise their respective e-peens

Then cue WoTC who seems to be taking hints from the awful way MTGS settles issues, and just bans the guy and then someone else, to look like they are reigning on harassment issues because in the wake of the #metoo stuff people these days shoot first and ask questions later. Like it or not this has implications on the personal freedoms of people because from now on you start asking yourself about what you do and say on your everyday life might lead to a suspension/banning from the DCI.

In short, there are two things that bother me in this drama:

1) I have no idea if that Jeremy guy deserves his ban or not, but WoTC has being handling things very poorly for ages. They could have been setting up the example, like for example encouraging good behavior(like instituting a prize for good sportmanship like in athletism/Soccer) or fosteringa kid/woman friendly environment at tournaments/LGS. Instead, they react hastily to a drama they could have helped defusing before it took these proportions.
Further, starting from now, WoTC attribute themselves the right to snoop on your personal life in search of potential behavior in breach of their so-called code of conduct. You don't need to be an alt-righter or an anarchist to understand how this is intrinsically wrong on a moral level and borderline totalitarian.

2) I don't know if this part is truth o just a rumor, but if WoTC did take the guys MTGO collection from him, that plain and simple theft. You can write whatever TOS you want, it's simply theft and its wrong on many many moral levels. The very least you should do would be compensating the guy for the value of the property that was taken from him. Also that is a decision that does not bode well for MTGO because a few people now will think twice before buying virtual cards from WoTC. We had a similar issue with the Amazon Kindle, once people understood Amazon could arbitrarily delete books from your device, sales got a significant hit.

[Ærticle] - If You Can't Take Criticism of Jeremy Hambly, You're Part of the Problem

Back in the day, players could enjoy looking at characters like Liliana of the Veil, a raven-haired, wasp-waisted beauty whose close-fitting, off-the-shoulder dress shows her bare upper body to great effect, and hints at a cleavage which not disgrace a porn star.

Liliana is what boys like. (I know because I used to play Dungeons and Dragons, and she accords pretty well with all the witch characters in my adolescent fantasies.)

Now, increasingly, politically incorrect characters like Liliana are being sidelined and replaced by hideous but woke creations like the unattractive, asexual but impeccably right-on middle-aged female pirate Admiral Beckett Brass.

[Ærticle] - If You Can't Take Criticism of Jeremy Hambly, You're Part of the Problem

Reading thet shit is pretty hilarious though, look at this gem:
Why all this involved detail about the goings-on in a game most of us will never play, involving people we’re probably never going to meet, or maybe would even care to meet?

Well, I don’t want to come over Martin Niemöller here – (“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Socialist…” etc) – but this story is ultimately about something much bigger than the misfortunes of one snarky YouTuber.

Trolling like it's 2013. :chewy:

It is an interesting subculture. Online magic players, I mean. Everyone just trying to do their best, but not really understanding real life or something. Or is it a lack of insight into the bigger picture? Need to see a thesis on this one.

Blackhound, quit dogpiling him man, at least he has the decency of personally stating his disapproval of our actions, which is way more than you can say about the rest of the people in charge of that site, at least give that to him.

[Ærticle] - If You Can't Take Criticism of Jeremy Hambly, You're Part of the Problem

I guess the part that bothers me is that some of you were actually decent forum users in the past.

But now, all these years later, you're still more concerned with seeing how big of an asshat you can be to people you don't like than to move on and be halfway decent people.
Because decency as a human being is primarily measured against the golden standard of how well or ill disposed one is against the staff of an internet forum about magical cards.
