Nice. I'm debating on swapping to Nactl Burn for the two modern tournaments on MTGO this weekend. I really like my smooth two color mana tho
Anyone been playing online and has a read on how aggressive the MTGO meta is?
edit: I think if I'd play Nacatl burn, I'd the two Eidolon you playing for 2 Lavamancers. I don't see the value in Eidolon as a 2 of. Seems awkward and out of place, and I don't think the card is that good (too inconsistent for me)
Depends on the format, I think you'll find that most DE and Large events will be JUST like what is shown on MTGOGOLDFISH while the SE are filled with random combo and aggro.
I qualified for MOCS7 btw I went 5-1 losing against Grixis Tempo with its spellkiting and dragon claw funzies, I misboarded and kept a silly hand so its on me though (he went 6-0 in the end).
I played Robots once (G5), follow by URx for every other game.
P.S. I should mention that the only other 6-0 was from a burn list running Wild Nacatl and Eidolon of the Great Revel
Gah!!
I'm really tanking on the choice of running 4x Wild Nacatl or not... they'll drastically improve our early game while also increasing our horrible top-decks. They're also bad vs Jund (goyf and 10000x removals say hello) and Company.decks.
Not sure how I feel about Wild Nacatl, I know JHS ran Tasigur, the Golden Fang in that slot before with success but I feel that if your going to run a creature which doesn't impact the game right away (which isn't Grim, since Grim is more of a control card) you might as well run Tarmogoyf since he is a least hard to kill.
I def. respect JHS as a grinder though so you guys just might be on to something with adding extra creatures so just test it out and report back.
Merfolk? If they go double Spreading Sea it almost autolose.
Fallout out tend to deal much to little, Anger gets countered so pyroclasm works but that card is narrow as heck, thus I go with the Searing Blaze/Searing Blood, and some Destructive Revelry, path and yolo plan. I view Merfolk in the same light as Bloom one of those really hard MUs where we can sometimes win but not often.
Eidolon is really good depending on the meta vs Twins, Grixis Delver, Mirror, infect and Random Combo he is good or great (basically most of the T1 decks).
Against aggro, collective company decks and the like not so much.... I play on MODO so I face basically everything and I find the above MU decent or favorable already so I like running the deck to give me a shot vs the others (that said if your entering a typical large event not running Eidolon would be a mistake).
You shouldn't be playing fetches for the sake of thinning (I know I'm being a hypocrite here since I do it all the time, but the thinning your deck during the course of one R won't make a big enough differences), its just for grabbing lands and feeding grim/landfall.
I've been playing 4c Burn for awhile now I named it YOLO burn on my youtube channel - I think it fine though I recommend this manabase:
Lands 19
4 City of Brass
4 Mana Confluence
4 Scalding Tarn
2 Wooded Foothills
2 Mountain
1 Blood Crypt
1 Sacred Foundry
1 Stomping Ground
The reason being is that running only shock and fetch combo will force you to take 9 damage almost every game (which leave you dead vs aggro and burn and also makes your softer vs midrange and tempo) or slow down (which will defeat the purpose of adding more 1-drops) and since your running so many 2-drops I'll recommend the 2nd mountain.
I use to run Gemstone Mines as well but I found that R2-3 to be horrible when I added all my 2cc SB cards.... which is why I opted for extra fetch and basics.
For fun, SB'ing examples (though haphazard) and maybe inspiration to try out MODO because if I can go inf. (heck even make money) even with all my mistakes - you can as well!.
^Click to watch - I also have more videos on my channel which includes my haphazard SB'ing plans (I think I have most of the core MUs uploaded by now beside the mirror, though if you guys like I can post the SB'ing for that MU here).
Like always please like, sub and comment (next week I'll be posting my 5c/4c Burn lists)
so i played at scgs invitational....went 3-4 ugg 2-2 modern 1-2 standard. modern went round 1 vs gw little kid with 4 fiendslayer pallys main, 4 laylines and 3 kor firewalkers side. and round 2 vs bloomtitan and they went off turn 3 both games then i beat a scapeshift and a elf company deck. standard had 3 closer games, i was on attarka red, vs abzhan aggro game 3 i had him to one life and bricked 3 turns in a row. won vs abzhan control then lost to a sulti whip when he went from hellbent and dead on board next turn, to whip gain 10 life. oh well. my irl teammate walked away with 5 grand and a top 4 with merfolk however so it wasnt a totally wasted weekend
Ouch
At least your mate did well, Merfolk is quite strong in a fair environment.
EDIT: I HATE Bloom decks, almost want mindbreak trap for the MU.....
In your Naya burn, could you replace Scalding Tarn with Wooded Foothills? Wouldn't that also make it a little easier to fetch for your lands you need?
Yep, like what Val said Bloodstained Mire, Wooded Foothills. Arid Mesa and Scalding Tarn all do the same thing I just prefer Tarn's and Mires so I can pretend to other decks for turn or two.
Should I bring in destructive revelry in versus Tron?
Yep, it buys you a turn vs the worm which is generally the only way Tron can beat us.
I'm looking forward to reading about your testing results Platypus!!
@Pedrobear: It must be otherwise he wouldn't need 21 lands.

I've updated my YOLO list (its a real 5x deck now since I added blue cards and changed up the SB) so far I won 3-0 in an SE and I'm currently 3-0 in a DE.
Are the Tasigurs actually good in burn? Seems really weird.
I personally don't like it but I respect JHS enough as a fellow grinder to see some merit with the card (it does pretty much draws you an extra burn every turn after you hit 4 mana and its good vs ooze + goyf).
I'm still playing around with my 5c list (YOLO) since I find it rather amusing
Sweet. So I just bought this deck on MTGO because for the longest time I've been trying to force really bad RW decks. Lo and behold, I accidentally amassed the whole deck besides a few fetches, a set of Goblin Guides, and a bunch of commons and uncommons. So I snapped the deck up for 42 tix.
What I'm wondering is, is Naya strictly better than RW or RG versions? Is Black simply not worth running now?
I like Black and I personally believe you have really little reason not to play 3c unless your metagame is filled with aggressive decks,
Anyhow here is JohnnyHotSauce a consistence MTGO grinders take on jund Burn (its really solid in the current metagame, take that goyf. lightning bolt and ooze).
For fun, SB'ing examples (though haphazard) and maybe inspiration to try out MODO because if I can go inf. (heck even make money) even with all my mistakes - you can as well!.
The deck idea is just to cram the deck with as many 1cc spells as possible to create a more consistence turn 4 goldfish.
ETC
T1: Land + Burn or Creature
T2: Land + Burn x2 or Creature
T3: Burn x2 or land + burn + Creature with opp. fetching or creatures you may win on this turn
T4: Anything which deals damage
Its still in the design stage so things like lightning Helix, Blaze, Reducing land counts or even running extra 1c haste creature could be interesting (weak cards in the MD include devils, command, Mountain and/or shard).
Yeah - I had that discussion regarding Deflecting Palm on mtgs I can see its merits - it properly is better then Lava Spike type cards in that MU at the very least. Regarding the Mirror its been awhile since I experienced it outside 2-Man which I don't really record, just wait until it chance upon one during a DE.
For fun, SB'ing examples (though haphazard) and maybe inspiration to try out MODO because if I can go inf. (heck even make money) even with all my mistakes - you can as well!.
Palm has its purposes but Path to Exile is more relevant.
Anyhow I went 3-1 in my DE I lost against twins because I hit all my non-damaging cards while he was 1 burn away from defeat (the sin of overboarding).
I think running less then 8 "skullcrack" effects is asking to lose against Junk or Collected Company - here is my revised list if I was to play a modern MOCS:
Sideboard 15
4 Destructive Revelry
3 Skullcrack
3 Kor Firewalker
2 Path to Exile
2 Rending Volley
1 Searing Blaze[/deck]
P.S. If anyone want to toss videos for me to post on my channel I'll be very happy.
P.S.S. I misread Deflecting Palm and was corrected on mtgs - I don't think I'll be running them anymore.
Currently 3-0 in this DE beating Junk x2 and Tron x1 running this new super secret spicy burn deck I cooked up, I'm going to keep running through DEs during the weekend.
- - - - -
Well its now a 4-0, my last Opp. was Tooth and Nail
I think it depends on which MU the Leyline is attached with, in the mirror its doable if you hit a nice creature count and they don't draw gas but vs a combo deck which you'll need to beat quickly......
@Valdarith: Collectively got over 10,000+ boosters (which doesn't mean anything since you'll need way more to hit clan leader-boards but for tiny clan under 2 years old with less then 60 members its quite impressive).
@purp: I wish - its just a counter not real boosters, whenever someone gets boosters it adds to that counter.
I wouldn't cut any Des Rev on MODO because of leyline, I don't think they're as popular on paper so I don't know about that, I'll personally keep 1-lander + lots of 1cc spells since the odds for drawing that 2nd land is rather high.
I really find it interesting that so many players here are afraid of running 3-4 Shard Volley, when at the goal is to close out the game as soon as possible T4 or T5 - its not like you won't have 2-3 lands during those turns.
@purp: I'll run some extra anti-lifegain cards in those SB slots it really makes the difference in all the Junk, Jund and random life-gain MUs, if you still have room Blood, Blaze, Fallout and Rending (<-- not a fan) are decent options.
Three Dragon's Claw is the norm for Grixis Delver. Bring in two Destructive Revelry to counter, and three if you see a Spellskite in game two. I'm personally playing three Claw and one Spellskite in my paper list.
I say no to cute cards like Qasali Pridemage in the board. I prefer cards that always deal damage. Anything that doesn't deal damage during all phases of the game does not go in my sideboard (Kor Firewalker being the exception), but I also recognize that I'm on the far side of that spectrum.
Cheers Val, I really do appreciate advice from the other perspective - so 2-3 Destructive Revelry it is
I had a huge post typed up this morning and the site crashed..
TL;DR version - How do we beat t1 vial from Merfolk? Is molten rain actually good? Viability of 3rd path? Seems better than rending volley.
Molten Rain is decent the 3cc is the main issue though, I'll be testing upping the PtE count within a few days I think its viable.
I generally accepted Merfolk as a bad MU since I started playing Naya Burn mainly because spreading sea is brutal against our low land count and high colour requirements.
Sideboard 15
2 Skullcrack
2 Volcanic Fallout
2 Path to Exile
2 Kor Firewalker
3 Deflecting Palm
4 Destructive Revelry[/deck]
I 3-1 a DE:
R1: Twin 2-0
R2: Jund 2-1
R3: Robots 2-0
R4: Collected Company Junk 1-2 <-- he got 2x Spellkite which just sealed the deal (I would of preferred Fink spam but Noooooo).
Reason why I like Mogg Fanatic
1) He is 1cc
2) He always does something (block then Ping or eats a removal then Ping, which can buy a free pass for burns or creatures when they tapout or even buy a turn if your blocking something fat)
3) He can attack...
- - - - - - - -
Grixis tends to run 2 or more [card]Dragon's Claw[/card], how many Destructive Revelry would you bring in to combat this?
- - - - - - - -
Thoughts on running 2x Reclamation Sage or 2x Qasali Pridemage in the sideboard as a 2/2 split between Destructive Revelry? It gives you a "just encase card" vs Maybe leylines and Grixis ([card]Dragon's Claw[/card]) without being dead if they don't cast them.
They only allowed me to record one match before they took it down so I decided against recording it - I think games pop faster during this hour or something since it usually isn't this fast during AU prime time.
Yay discussion the forum has been slow for the past few days
Anyhow I have those Fallout for Grixis which I find harder to deal with then Twins, the Shard Volley arn't that horrible unless your using them for early removals rather then finishers but yeah I can see why 4 maybe over doing it.
I don't like Lavamancer but he is too necessary to control Affinity and Infect to cut.
This may sound crazy but - what are your thoughts on Mogg Fanatic over Grim Lavamancer? I find that old grimmy gets killed far too often during the summoning sickness phase - at least Mogg can do its job no matter what (also for some odd reason people refuse to use removal on the little guy until they notice he dealt 2+ damage already through swings).
Also you're giving up significant percentage in the mirror to play Atarka's Command in the 60. If I were on that plan I'd just play small Zoo. I don't think 4 Shard Volley can realistically be supported.
I just like the idea of having 8x Skullcrack like effects in the 75 the +1/+1 is just a bonus, what is small zoo?
About the Shard Volleys they can be kinda awkward, I just hold on to them until I plan on finishing my opponent (...or when I'm flooded....), its not like you can take your lands into the next match so I just spam 1cc spells at the end.
Wizards prints the best red two drop of all time -- a Legacy and Modern all-star -- and you choose NOT to play him?
Anything less than four is flat out wrong. The card is AMAZING.
I love Eidolon of the Great Revel in legacy, in Modern I feel like it makes our good MUs better but is rather weak in our bad/even MUs (since we pretty much kill ourselves via land, so races become horrible against the better quality creatures which your opp. can pump out).
Atarka's Command is a really powerful card, so much so that I'm really thinking about revisiting Vexing Devil.... (seriously he either tanks up a removal or deals 4 damage).
- - - - - - -
How important is Eidolon of the Great Revel in the current format? I find that he ends up being a minor blockers lots of the time now with all the annoying delve creatures popping up the format.
- - - - - - -
I have quite a number of video recorded now (filled with some really terrible plays, though I'm relearning) here is my current list
Sideboard 15
2 Skullcrack
2 Volcanic Fallout
2 Path to Exile
2 Kor Firewalker
3 Deflecting Palm
4 Destructive Revelry[/deck]
I really dislike the Grim Lavamancer and I wouldn't mind finding a way to force 4x Eidolon of the Great Revel back into the list but I'm not sure how (+ I don't think he helps much in our tough MUs anyways).
So far I think the format is really lifehappy so I wouldn't play any list with less then 8 anti-lifegain cards somewhere in the 75, I think Lightning Helix really needs some more considerations since games usually slow down on M2-3 (post board) the extra 3 life and buy turns.
I went 0-2. Lost a close one to abzan splashing blue for ojutais command, and then in round 2 i was drunk and not paying attention. Trying not to fall into the trap of building my deck for modo, but instead for the gp.
MODO meta is mainly Grixis, Twins, Junk, Robots and Burn + a little of everything else.
Won't the GP be pretty much the same?
I have also been losing games keeping 1 landers, granted I am on 19, maybe I should go to 20.
That is just variance, I don't think you'll be getting huge changes between 20 or 19 lands.
Well I just 3-1 playing the same DE as Xilez, I lost my final match against Junk running Leylines (it was close M1 (which I lost after I hit my 7th land, I only needed 1 burn to end it but ) M2 and M3 were one sided matches).
Anyhow, the cards I'm really thinking about are Shard Volley, Grim Lavamancer, Lightning Helix, Searing Blaze and Skull Crack - trying to work out the right numbers is really tough.
