Board/card games?

Postby imopen2 » Sun Sep 30, 2012 5:04 am

This is a place to post about board games/card games you like/are interested in.

I myself am partial to the italian card game "Bang!" as I have played it for hundreds and hundreds of hours and am still not bored of it.

Other games I play often are Betrayal at House on the Hill, Arkham Horror, and recently 7 Wonders.

Has anyone else played these games or have some suggestions for ones I should play?

Bang! is the shit. Try out munchkin if you get a chance.
Settlers of Catan with the Cities and Knights expansion is probably the best board game I have ever played.

also the game Pandemic has been pretty popular among my competitive friends who get upset when they lose. It's entirely co-op so no one has hurt feelings if that's what your group is like.

I've heard good things about Vanguard and Versus System, but haven't given them a try

VS System is Baller.

Munchkin lost its luster for me. I used to like it when I was a teenager (like 12-15), but now I can't stand it.

Castle ravenloft is like a dnd game with random dungeon generation and coop. Bad things happen constantly and you rely on each other to win. It's difficult so fun.

I want to check out this Castle Ravenloft game Zi's talking about. I'm a fan of DnD, so this sounds right up my alley.

Other than that, do I really need to mention the card game I like? ;)

Carcassonne is amazing, I've never found anyone who wants to play just one game of it.

Deck Building games tend to be fun, if at times very masturbatory, especially with ascension, which can be described as 'High Tide: The Game' at times (as an ironic touch, Brian Kibler made it), Thunderstone is probably the least masturbatory one, although the games tend to play out the same (although still very fun)

Have heard nothing but fantastic things about that game, except their seem to be more editions then people who play it.

Yesss!!!!!

Both the original and revised versions. I think the original is my favorite though. We play pretty straight up except house rules Germany goes first and Russia cant attack first turn.

I consider myself an above average Japanese player :)

Wow!!! I am truly surprised at this!!!!! Let me know if you want to play by forum, I know a site where you can play,
just need to download a easy map program and the forum has a built in dice server!

Original was really fun but once our play group figured out the "infantry push mechanic" it lost it's fun and became a stack and dice battle. Then Revised came out and it was fun except that Allies always had an edge. Now Axis and Allies Spring 1942 came out and it fixed what was broken in the original and revised.

I am not a Japanese player, the purchases always get me. Can't seem to figure out the infantry to transport ratio. I am more of a Russian player as it's where the action is!

Wow MJ you really surprised me with this one!!!!

I've also played a game of Axis & Allies (I own Pearl Harbor). Fun, but insanely time consuming, especially for setup.

Carcassone is pretty good, but my playgroups don't seem to really want to pull it off the shelf over, say, 7 Wonders (aka Drafting: The Game), Dominion, Settlers, Agricola, Puerto Rico, Power Grid, etc.

I personally really dislike Betrayal, because of how RNGbased it is, how shoddy the rules are, and how generally difficult it is for the traitor to win, but it also gets played on a weekly basis.

Munchkin is pretty meh, IMO, but I've got a game along a similar vein called Killer Bunnies that is a lot of fun, IMO. Can't take it seriously, which was the intent for (at the time) a bunch of competitive MTG players.

Old thread, but I feel like I should tell you guys to go play Citadels. It's a great game for anywhere between 2-8 players. It plays like a draft where you're choosing a new role (King, Assassin, Merchant, etc) every round, then passing to the left while trying to figure out what your opponents chose. No setup required either!

All my other favourites have already been mentioned (Carcassone and Pandemic round out my top 3), but I guess I'll say that I think 7 Wonders is overrated. My brother is a big fan, but I didn't find it that exciting in the few games I played. Oh yeah, and Ticket to Ride is another good one.

i've played citadels. it's fun but it got old pretty quick for me. i've been playing a few new games that are worth taking a look at. Core Worlds, nightfall, and shadow hunters.

core worlds is quite involved but if you like drafting then you'll love this because it is kinda a huge winchester draft.

nightfall is kinda like magic except you build your deck through buying cards each turn that get added to your discard pile and then shuffled into your deck. your starting deck slowly gets removed and you end up with a deck consisting mainly of the cards you bought.

shadow hunters is my favorite of the 3 because it is closest to Bang! which is still probably my favorite (non-magic) game. the difference is that the abilities and the win conditions of the shadow hunter characters vary a lot more than in Bang! and there is an added randomization factor in how you can attack so the games can go quickly and multiple teams can
win at once.

Anyone ever play the Civilization board game? It looks really deep, but I don't think I have a group of friends that will just dive into it (even with good BGG reviews).

I too have been looking at Civ the board game every time I go somewhere that has one. It's always fifty plus dollars and looks crazy complicated. I've played it once, but only the first few turns in between rounds at a magic tournament. I didn't quite get it.

To put it simply, they try to allow you to win through every method besides religion (? maybe culture, definitely can do the others), and it's very deep/thought intensive with lots of short/long-term planning.
