Nirvana - Genius or Overrated?

No poll, let's just discuss it!

Personally, I like Nirvana, but I do not think they are as great as some people do.

I much prefer Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden to them.

So...thoughts?

Their Best song is a David Bowie Cover.

That really sums it up for me.

What Kurt did to the music world is in one of the top 3 biggest impacts regardless, I have 300 Nirvana songs in my library and they are amazing.

Seen pumpkins and soundgarden live, while I agree SP can play their instruments better, lyrically Nirvana was amazing.

The MTV live acoustic show they did is their best stuff ever though.

Not even close to the Top 3 Impact on Music.

Where is Grunge Today?

I mean you know that's not how progress works, right?

Too morbid to talk about the 27 Club?

Too Soon.

That's exactly my point shalako. He made grunge big and then it died off with him, because he was the best. Nobody has gotten close to a genre creation/destruction like Kurt did.

Hendrix and Janis Joplin were also amazing

I like them, even if all he/Nirvana did was take what the Pixies/Dinosaur Jr. were doing and present it in a mainstream, digestible fashion.

not genius, but definitely grunge's defining band.

I don't think of grunge as a genre as much as I think of it as a label based on how the bands looked. It was really just a mostly regional explosion of good alternative rock bands. And I wouldn't really say that Nirvana is over rated as much as I would say that it's not surprising the grunge band most influenced by pop music became the most popular.

I don't think they've one of the top 3 biggest impacts on music. On the 90s? Of course. 2000s? Yeah. But overall? Off the top of my head I think of the first polyphonic compositions, churches starting to accept the use of tritones, and the invention of the six string guitar.

That show/album is awesome. For me it's a tossup between unplugged and in utero

I couldn't agree with you more. It is, by far, my favorite Nirvana album.
Dead just like him.
Oh, so it was killed by Courtney Love, too?
That's exactly my point shalako. He made grunge big and then it died off with him, because he was the best. Nobody has gotten close to a genre creation/destruction like

This is true, but I don't think anyone's ever really tried. I think most of the bands that formed since then sought to be seen separately from Nirvana.

Jim Morrison.
'Nuff said.

Yeah, I wouldn't even say The Beatles were one of the top 3 biggest impacts on music, and they made a much bigger impact than Nirvana.

Just a good band for their time, nothing special. If he had lived they'd have been quickly obsoleted.
