MTGO Testing Group anyone?

I have an idea; not sure anyone will be interested but I was chatting with MDU about it and he suggested posting so here we go :)

I play exclusively on MTGO and the one thing that I miss from playing IRL (apart from the pleasure of having real cards in all there shiny wonderfulness) is proxying up a deck and spending a whole day learning every single nuance of how it works and the key points of specific match ups. I really enjoy doing this and also find it improves my results immensely :D So, I’d like to do this again, ideally on MTGO, though I’d be up for Cockatrice too.

The obstacle on MTGO is obviously that you have to own the cards to play with them :(
That said cards are plentiful and it’s easy to resell them, albeit generally at a small loss (assuming you buy and sell when the market is pretty stable). When MDU and I spoke we were discussing the Mono U Devo deck which runs between $150 and $300 to buy from scratch (depending largely on how many copies of Jace you run) so what I have in mind is something like everyone interested chips in, we get the deck (we may well have a lot of the cards between us, especially commons and uncommons) play test it to death, come up with a full strategy and S/B plan then sell the deck and repeat as required.

Is anyone up for getting involved in a project like this?

I'd love to if I could get the time for it. I've yet to actually sit down and get MTGO going because of it.

I'm in. I play MTGO exclusively as well, selling off my paper currently. I'm more involved in Modern currently, but I'm fine with buying the more eternally playable cards and running the gauntlet with them.

Great :) Anyone else out there? :)

I play exclusively online as well but mostly limited. I'm interested in getting into standard and block more but I doubt I would have enough time to contribute to this consistently. I have a lot of cards online so rather than pitching in for decks I would perhaps just make the deck people wanted to test against and I'd be up for hour/couple hour long testing seshes with people if they are available. You can just pm me on here if you want to test and include a specific decklist you want to test against. Then I would see what I could do as far as the list and schedule etc

Sounds good :) Any contributions are great as far as I'm concerned. It would be nice to build Mono U Devo and Colossal Gruul. Lists are here -http://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/standard

I've got pretty much everything for all the Red deck variants myself :)

I'm LaZerBurn on MTGO, add me :)

I have 2 Domri Rade on MTGO already, and nearly everything you'd want for Boros except Stormbreath.

Peanut gallery: why not venture to some other threads to find competent pilots for each deck? Playing against someone who has played the deck for a few hours isn't going to be as useful. Plus, they already have the deck.

I am currently not buying MTGO cards as I am into Limited and also car shopping, but I would still like to be involved. I can watch games or test decks for those trusting among you.

I would be interested as well. Currently have the cards for MBD and all red varients. I would be open to pitching in for some of the mono U as well. Name there is Narcasus

I've got Stormbreaths :)

I agree with you there Helios though I do think you also learn a lot about a deck by playing it as well as against it which was partly involved in my interest in us getting the decks. I'll put out some feelers and see if any non Red players are interested in getting involved :)

Cool by me Kaitscralt, I'm quite happy for people to contribute what they can :)

I watched U Devo prices - MOW, Jace etc - but sadly they seem to have held their value :(

If you don't mind paying 6 tickets, you can just play Standard Elimination - every event I played had at least 1 MonoU player (so no shortage in that testing department).

That said I'm going to go buy some Dragons again (I got them and sold them for 14, but now they're only 12 :D).

p.s. Anyone know any good recording programs, I might need to record my games live now (so I'll add commentary) not sure how I'm going to make the BGM works though .

I use Open Broadcaster Software which has an option to record locally to a file, stream to
twitch/justin/whatever, or do both at the same time.

If you need help setting it up, I can help via PM or Skype. hamfactorial on both

I checked out the single elims earlier and I am downloading Open Broadcaster as I type :) If this works (my IT skills are utterly retarded) I will soon be a much better MTG player by a process of public ridicule :)

Do I take it you will be carrying on playing then MDU? I hope so :) I don't know how easy it is to do or anything but commentary at the interesting bits over the BGM would be fantastic! :)

I set-up twitch and OBS (which is great) is the delay normal when your streaming, anyway to reduce it?

The delay is normal, most of ny viewers say it's around 10 seconds. Setting CBR helps. I suspect that twitch buffers a bit to hedge against congestion on the streamer's end.

I need to borrow:

4 Temple of Abandon (2.5)
3 Stomping Ground (10.2)

If you'll need me to provide collateral, I don't mind letting you hold onto (13 Tix).

Thanks.

Thanks ham, I'm gonna run my Gruul Experiment series now.

Anyone interested in setting up Twitch teams (who play in my timezone)? Two head of equal or greater skills is better then one.

I'm not of equal skill (yet! :) ) but I'll jump on twitch and contribute whatever I can whenever I can - my work schedule varies so I may not always be on at the same times as you. I'm LaZerBurn on twitch too

Gruul Experiment Series is doing alright you can see the progress here the deck is alright, its best for people who don't enjoy long games or just really hate MonoU. (with no DEs its going to be hard to break even)

Ham, think you'll be online on Sat? I think I liked the lands enough to buy my own now, so next time your online give me a head up so I can return yours.

I should be, but I may do some overtime at the office. I'm not playing anything RG right now, so it's OK if you hold them for a bit.

Hamfactorial, how many viewers do you usually get when you stream on Twitch TV?

Trying to decide if I should go set-up the streaming or just try out YouTube LIVE.

I finally broke down and bought MTGO. Going to start working on building up the card base.

I get about 10, but I don't put myself in the public directory. They're all from FoS and a few folks I picked up from posting on Sally.

I expect I would have more if I streamed more than once every few weeks.

Anyone own a [card]Legion's Initiative[/card] which I can borrow for 1 week? Never mind my last Opp. during the 8-Man didn't want to split so the extra booster from that funded the horrible card.

Hi LaZerBurn, another MTGO only player here... Love the idea of a testing group! Guess we would have to assemble user names, timelines, format/deck to start with, what do you think?

Just realized I'm somehow already buddy with MDU - but he's only online during my evenings whe he plays MOCS lol...

Posted: Fri Dec 13, 2013 2:09 pm

Hi dauntless :) I've added everyone on here and I chat and discuss strategy and match ups regularly with anyone who is online :) Coordination is the challenging part, timezones being the main issue I think. MDU(Australia) is 11 hours ahead of me Pedros(Poland I think) about the same and Ham(US) about 5 behind. I'm in the UK and I'm generally on mid-late morning/afternoon/ late evening. Add me on MTGO and hit me up anytime you see me :)
