Definitely!

I think the Swiftspear + Seeker element, missing from my first Volcanic Fallout list, puts it over the top. I was opting to run naturally pro-red creatures that were kind of disappointing on their own (Auriok Champion), which left me lacking punch. Seeker + Firewalker + Helix means I don't need any more Burn hate out of the side, freeing up slots to fight against wacky combo stuff.

Won round 4 vs. Burn. He destroyed me G1 with a turbo-nut draw of Monastery Swiftspear into Monastery Swiftspear into quadruple Mutagenic Growth for the T2 kill. :suicide:

He made some questionable choices in G2, boarding in both Blood Moon and Leyline of Punishment (which he had in his opener). He screwed me off of white and shut off lifegain, but he drew some wimpy looking Swiftspears and no real way to activate Prowess. A burn deck should never try to mana screw an opponent at the cost of actual gas.

In G3 I continued on my merry way, gaining a few life here and there and beating him down with Brimaz. :toot:

This is so true

Molten Rain would've been the correct choice if he wanted to go that route

Anyways, congrats on the 4-0!

dat 20/20/20 tho

It wouldn't be that much of a stretch to play Crackling Doom, is it better than Stoke?

I almost titled the deck Triple Dubs Boros, but it wouldn't make any sense if I adjusted the numbers later :P

I loved Crackling Doom when I was brewing a big Dega deck a few weeks ago, and would be happy to try it out here. Runed Halo accomplishes a similar role out of the SB here against Bogles, but with some additional upside against other decks like Scapeshift, Ad Nauseam, Jeskai Ascendancy, random discard decks, etc. I often bring it in against Burn in place of Volcanic Fallout.

The appeal of Stoke is that occasionally I can cast it for free, and 4 damage per card is a good return on investment. If you wanted to play an additional black dual land and an extra fetch, you could easily play a pair of Crackling Doom instead of Stoke. The real meat of the deck is in the low end, so the rest is just seasoning.

Val:

I'm going to try out Ajani, or perhaps an Ajani/Chandra split in place of Stoke. I liked the PWs in your original list, but chopped them while I was playing with Flamespeaker.

I'm also going to swap the 2nd Sword for an Isochron Scepter :V

I made one more change after noticing an oversight with last night's decklist. I had 2 Bloodstained Mires but only 1 basic Mountain, so I cut 1 and added a 3rd basic Plains. The mana base is now -

[Deck]4 Arid Mesa
4 Marsh Flats
1 Bloodstained Mire
4 Sacred Foundry
1 Godless Shrine
3 Plains
1 Mountain
2 Clifftop Retreat[/deck]

I don't think you want more than 1 Clifftop Retreat. But, hey, that's just me. CiPT lands can suck sometimes.

I actually like Ghost Quarter quite a bit more. Blows up manlands, breaks up Tron, and makes sure Gavony Township doesn't beat you. I think it'd win you more games than Stronghold would, and in fact I feel like Stronghold is winmore most of the time.

It's actually not that cut and dry. I've seen a lot of scenarios where Ghost Quarter was better. Games vs infect or affinity immediately come to mind. It's also not trivial to leave the Tec Edge and one mana up in a 20-land deck.

Scapeshift isn't bad G1 with all the maindeck lifegain, but if they catch me with a timely counter or sweep my board before I can get a Brimaz down, it's tough to race.

Killing a land buys me an extra turn against Scapeshift, but so does a lifelinked Seeker or a Lightning Helix.

Yeah, it becomes even more lopsided after SB when I bring in the Mindcensors.

I still need to do some real sideboarding plans vs. the various matchups. During the daily I was mostly improvising between rounds. Figuring that out would help the clunky SB numbers.

Why no slaughter games? i understand 4 is a high mana cost in a deck with 20 lands, but against scapeshift and other combo is almost an autowin

I've come up with two different but similar versions, which I can play to suit the meta -

[deck]Boros Swords[/deck]

[deck]Boros Scepter[/deck]

The substitution is pretty straightforward. One plays swords and more creatures (including Firewalker). The other drops the swords and the Firewalker in favor of Isochron Scepter and a higher instant count.

I may find some happy hybrid of the two versions that plays well. There are a lot of decks that just can't beat a T2 Boros Charm or a Lightning Helix on a Scepter.

I like the Scepter version more, but Magma Jet is kind of lame with Volcanic Fallout already in the deck. I'm open to suggestions about what to play there instead. Searing Blaze isn't great because my land count is low. Manamorphose is a do-nothing, but great CA on a stick and provides 1/2 free Prowess triggers.

Boros Charm has been very good. I've gained absurd amounts of life against Burn by double-striking a Seeker of the Way, and it helps me out against sweepers and single-target removal from BGx.

I dropped Path to Exile after playing a ton of games and realizing that it's only good vs. Tron and perhaps Twin. It's so-so against Pod, ramping them is awful since their ground threats are much better than mine.

I've been playing Crackling Doom out of the SB to deal with the ridiculous Bogle decks and Scapeshift's sideboard plan of Inferno Titan.

Start as the Kor Firewalker/ Sword of Fire and Ice deck, then sideboard into the Isochron Scepter deck when you want to be the control? You wouldn't have to play Magma Jet, because you can also bring in whatever you keep in the board (Magma Spray, [card]Wear // Tear[/card], Searing Blood, Path to Exile etc.). Don't know if this is what you were getting at in your post.

That's an interesting idea, Todd, thanks! I wasn't getting at that, I was viewing the two versions separately.

Some sort of semi-transformational SB could be nice, as I often bring in Hide//Seek and take out some number of creatures depending on what I'm up against.
