I'm starting to think that LP is just calling random opponents he's faced names of pro players.

Like, just last week, my round 1 opponent at FNM, Patrick Sullivan, said he liked my Avon Mountains. Later in Round 2, Patrick Chapin said the same thing!!

We have a guy at our store that gets salty and leaves after taking his first loss at FNMS and such and I feel I've gotten a better understanding of tilt because of him.

People who tilt off like that feel that they deserve...something. Doesn't really matter what it is. Fair and balanced games. Equal distribution of lands and spells. that they can top deck but they're oppoennts can't. Whatever. All that. Specifics don't matter.

The point is that they seek something that they aren't entitled to. That and I think some people just have a misinformed idea of what probability actually is. I mean, you should here some of the logic people use for justifying and mulling certain hands. Weather they're right or wrong, the logic is usually just inane.
Am I off in guessing that guy runs high-powered decks? He's probably expecting to have the cards win for him. Tell him to play a budget deck, one that he knows won't win by jamming powerful cards. It's not enough to have good cards in a deck. You also need to know how to pay those cards to best effect. A budget build will force him to evaluate his lines of play. Sure, it makes winning more difficult, but even a well-built budget deck can pull off surprising wins. It's a joy in and of itself to take down a tier 1 $400 deck with a $20 budget build. :)
Like i said numerous times, expectations lead to disappointment. Which in turn leads to tilt.

The Game is its own reward.
Expectations lead to disappointment. Disappointment leads to suffering. Very Buddhist.

I look at it through the lens that I'm over 40 and playing a game based on magic and monsters. If I'm not having fun, then there's no point to playing any more.

@Strider: He usually plays janky ass BW warriors.

@Khaos: Lots of high profile players on the west coast.

There where also something like 1/3d of the worlds Platinum pros at the WMCQ in Oakland last fall. They all scrubed out playing UW control except Josh Utter-Layton. He top cashed playing RW burn.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

I've been contemplating writing something called "The Zen of Magic" but it'd probably go over some people's heads.

Well then if he's already playing janky builds, he should be expecting to not do well. Sounds like he doesn't have a well-built deck. Probably something he built himself (or saw on Sally), so there's an element of pride involved. Most people are terrible at deck construction but won't admit to it.

So there I was at the 3-0 table at some chicago 5k when for round 4 sitting diagonally from me was WORLD CLASS PLAYER ADRIAN SULLIVAN. He played really intensely and all of his permanents were upside down. Later, I saw WORLD CLASS PLAYER ADRIAN SULLIVAN talking with WORLD CLASS PLAYER JEFF HOOGLAND very casual like. It made me felt like I had made it.

Just for you Jack: me getting much better at limited is predominantly the result of a conversation with Josh McClain, Nate Holliday, and Sam Pardee during a team draft they had against friends of mine. During said draft, me and McClain started talking about what it takes to be good at Constructed and who the best constructed players where. Pardee mostly named his teammates and Jacob Wilson while I went with Mahara and Efro.

I think it's fine. The rationale they gave for doing it seems off, but it was never fun to have a commander tucked. The better the effect is, the worse it hurts. And honestly, general-reliant strategies are still hindered by the re-casting tax.

Luck is just probability made personal.
I only take it personally when things that are highly statistically unlikely happen and they punish me in spite of correct plays :P Just the same, I'm starting a new hobby or two and backing off the magic. Might even speak to females. I think that if it isn't my only pastime I might care less / have less reason to tilt. Other hobbies will be non-competitive and have no luck component for the sake of my own sanity.
