Postby Jamie » Wed Mar 18, 2015 10:31 pm

[deck=Gareth Aye @ GP San Antonio 2014-11-30]
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Hordeling Outburst

2 Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
4 Fated Conflagration
4 Lightning Strike
4 Magma Jet
4 Stoke the Flames

3 Treasure Cruise

2 Island
6 Mountain
4 Bloodstained Mire
1 Polluted Delta
4 Shivan Reef
1 Swiftwater Cliffs
4 Temple of Epiphany
1 Wooded Foothills

Sideboard

3 Disdainful Stroke
3 Negate
2 Keranos, God of Storms
3 Chandra, Pyromaster
3 Anger of the Gods
1 Swiftwater Cliffs
[/deck]

Game 1 you're a sligh deck with treasure cruise reload. Game 2 you are the control player. Game 2 your opponent will have boarded in all their useless drown in sorrow or end hostilities while you're playing chandra and keranos.

With FRF released, here's what I'm playing

[deck= ]
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Hordeling Outburst

2 Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
4 Fated Conflagration
3 Lightning Strike
4 Wild Slash
4 Stoke the Flames

4 Treasure Cruise

2 Island
7 Mountain
4 Wooded Foothills
1 Flooded Strand
4 Shivan Reef
1 Swiftwater Cliffs
4 Temple of Epiphany

Sideboard

2 Disdainful Stroke
3 Negate
1 Dig Through Time
1 Keranos, God of Storms
3 Outpost Siege
3 Anger of the Gods
1 Font of Fortune
1 Swiftwater Cliffs
[/deck]

Cool tech: upkeep fated conflagration on a siege rhino. watch as your opponent pauses to read the card.
Frost Walker seems pretty good for the deck. Flamewake Phoenix + Frostwalker seems pretty good. Who knows.

After DTK, Roast is pretty much a strict upgrade over fated conflagration. And the obvious red 1- and 2- drops seem really good.

Game 2 are you removing all of your creatures? What's your typical deck after boarding?

Here is what I'd use against abzan control
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Hordeling Outburst
2 Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
4 Fated Conflagration
3 Lightning Strike
4 Stoke the Flames
4 Treasure Cruise
the original 23lands
all sideboard cards that aren't anger of the gods, including the 24th land
(I took out swiftspear firedrinker and wildslash)

Against sligh, I will take out rabble and firedrinker. Bring in 2 negate 2 outpost 3 anger 1 land.
Against sultai control, take out slash strike, 1fated, 4 firedrinker. Bring in every sideboard card that isn't anger.
Against straight ub control, same thing but take out swiftspear instead.

Only when I see a deck title that piques my interest. The fact that he's trying a transformational sideboard (well, partially) is always interesting. I used to play Standard a lot. Been a few years now (UR Snapcaster Burn was my last deck), but the strategy still interests me.

Fair enough. But we can't keep meeting up like this. People will begin to talk.

Wait. What are you talking about?

Back on topic, Jamie, is the plan still to blank their Drowns and other creature removal by removing the bulk of your creatures? Looks like your new sideboard (post-DTK) isn't really going that route as much, right? Did it not work very well, or were planeswalkers just poor replacements for creatures?

I don't have a postDTK list. I guess the answer is in blue and red there is no good planeswalker. I took Outpost Siege over Chandra since it's the same card except Outpost doesn't die to hero's downfall. Chandra would technically be better against monoRed, but I win the matchup a lot anyway.
It's not possible with my current list to board out 100% of your creatures. The ones I keep depend on the matchup. For example, against jeskai tempo decks, I will keep rabble master but I'll sandbag it until they tap out or I can play stoke the flames with it.

Oh, sorry, FRF. I didn't bother checking back when I wrote that.

Right, so you're not really running the sideboard like you used to. Still a cool deck.

I don't get it. The 2 sideboards are identical, except one has chandra and one has outpost siege. They are the same card.

Outpost Siege can't be attacked, and doesn't die to Hero's Downfall. It's just easier to protect.

That's why you run outpost siege instead of chandra

I guess I just mistook your line "Game 2 your opponent will have boarded in all their useless drown in sorrow or end hostilities while you're playing chandra and keranos," to mean that you would be boarding out nearly all of your creatures, which you're not really doing. Just my misunderstanding since, in my experience, trying to blank their creature removal works best when you really go for it. They can't 3 for 1 you with Drown, but them killing a Rabblemaster plus one is probably good enough.

I was messing around with this deck all day yesterday and like I suspected, it's awful. Lightning berserker over firedrinker, roast over fated conflagration (I ended back up at 2raost 2fated though), and that's all the easy upgrades. Control players aren't playing ub anymore and have maindeck options against enchantments and planeswalkers, so there's no sweetspot there anymore. Dromoka's command is pretty oppressive.

Of course I knew all that going in - that everyone got huge tools and I got roast. If I win game1, it's off the back of rabblemaster + removal and not the Sligh. Enchantment removal and heros downfall aren't the end of the world for chandra/Outpost. Those cards have a lot of targets and just jamming a cardadvantage engine will probably work a lot of the time. It sucks going from 0% chance to be removed to 50%, but that's still good odds.

The deck has to go bigger which stinks because my little pet deck loses it's identity but I'm gonna work on it some more. But there's no shortage of awesome big options.
