Surely no MTG players actually think they're 'hardcore' in any aspect of their lives. Surely they don't form a band of equally misled MTG players where they talk about how 'hardcore' it is to let their lives be dictated by a single piece of the color pie. Surely they don't pass up their family duties to run off to FNM while their kids are neglected at home.Surely they aren't over the age of 25, paunchy, and overly sensitive about relationships with women? Surely they don't all make gay jokes under the guise of being straight, secure-in-their-sexuality-men, do they??

serious note for a second:
IVs are non-modifiable (after you have the pokemon) base stat enhancers that range from 0-31. you can manipulate a pokemon's IVs by breeding. without items, two parents mate and 3 random IVs between the parents are passed on, while 3 more are randomly generated. in X and Y, one parent holding the Destiny Knot while in the day care will allow 5 IVs between the two parents (so 5 of 12) to be passed on to the child. When breeding, you start with two pokemon with at least 1 perfect IV from the father to pass on to the child that the mother doesn't have, then replace the mother with the child with the new set of perfect IVs and the father with one that has a different perfect IV, and repeat that process until you've taken care of all 5 relevant
IVs (or hold out until that 6th IV is randomly generated as 31).

Additionally, you can manipulate this further by having one of the parents with the nature you want to hold an Everstone which guarantees the baby will have that nature. Power items also cause the representative stat to be passed on 100% (though IIRC this gets overwritten by Knot? or the other 4 IVs are randomly chosen and the Power item IV 100% passes? I'm past the point of needing this when I breed/don't breed for hidden power so it's mostly irrelevant).

Mother's ability has an 80% of passing on to the child. A father breeding with a ditto has a 60% chance of passing. This is relevant if the pokemon you have has a particular ability you want out of two abilities or if you're trying to pass a Hidden Ability from horde or friend safari pokemon.

friend safari pokemon have at least 2 IVs that are always perfect (and baby pokemon like riolu and mime jr always have at least 3), so breeding in this game is easier than it's ever been and usually you can breed a pokemon whose stats are perfect in a few hours depending on how lucky the RNG is for you.
