Time to build a Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed EDH deck in honor of your uncle.

No, you should build a junk colored deck led by Karador, Ghost Chieftain - that way you can include Xiahou Dun, but also cards like Karador and Voice of Resurgence and any other deer-related cards available.

And you should proxy Karador's flavor text to change it to read: "Death tried to uncrown me, but I just lost an eye."

That's...just...Austin.

Don't folks in your neck of woods use pressure cookers on deer instead of chrome poisoning? Quite endeering.

The deer where I live are tiny but can ruin a car. Lately the worse thing to hit in the boonies are horses. People keep turning them loose cause they afford
to feed them.

My uncle hit a cow once, and it damn near annihilated his car. He was also drunk so after spending a night in jail he got a new car with a shiny new breathalyzer. (Which I found it odd that his insurance paid out, not just for the car but for the breathalyzer too)

I'll be spending the next 7-10 hours in different airplanes and airports. I'm planning on reading as many of PV's strategy articles as I can in that time, and am very much looking forward to it. That man is a genius when it comes to Magic.
yeah PV is great. He seems to suffer from the "better lucky than good" clause, at least this past year ti seems.

Hope things pick up for him in the pro scene
Yeah, he's my favorite, mostly because he has such a great grasp of the game and is very willing to share his understanding of the finer points on how to succeed. Much
of what I read I had already learned from zem first, either because zem had read the articles well or just has the same affinity for game theory, but it really helped to read it again as a fairly strong player rather than as a beginner.

Recommended reads:
-The entire series on the different archetypes (aggro, control, combo and aggro - control, as well as midrange if you're into that sorta thing)
-playing with counterspells
-strategy and tactics
-the art of reducing variance
-seven play testing traps
-what makes good decks good (won't make you much of a better player, but it's nice)

... yeah, pretty much everything that man writes about strategy is gold.

Maybe the problem is inherently one of style; I favour beatdown and him control; that must affect our respective inclinations and evaluations. One thing I admire in long time control players is the ability to find and use every possible defensive resource in a position.

PV is the best magic strategist writer and it's barely close.

Chapin is the only other writer who comes close. LSV is a great writer, but all his value is in his video content which is the actual factual best.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

Reading PV's articles has really made me want to learn how to play control. I feel like I might really enjoy it, and possibly be good at it. Playing around Zem's legacy U/B definitely feels like a trial by fire, though.

I tend to enjoy strategies that favor combat and direct damage, but I hate all-in decks that lose to inconsistencies (greedy mana, over-reliance on god hands). Where's my guru? I feel like I'm closest to Brian Kibler in style, but most of his content is behind the pay wall, making me sad.
