What are you in school for?
Just a general AA.

When I started school, I was at a much different point in my life - I was only working part time as a peon, was living in a bachelor pad with 2 roommates, didn't have a car, was on a hiatus from Magic because NPH really made playing Red shitty (thanks,Stoneforge and Batterskull!), I dived right into a relationship - and I felt like I needed some direction.

At the time, it was the best decision I could've made.Since then, I started working full time and have had numerous promotions. I'm still a peon at Sam's Club, just an overworked one with slightly better pay. However, in order to move up, I had to sacrifice going to campus and switch to online classes, which is a lot harder fr me since I
crave interaction and attention. I also live on my own now, which makes me more dependent on my job since school doesn't pay bills. And, as you know, I'm also competitive in Magic (to a degree, in paper, and restricted to my local area) and I just formed a band, which is demanding more attention than I thought.

I've been in a period of rebuilding myself in the last few months. Some of you guys know this, others don't. My relationship crumbled because I wasn't happy. My school work and professional life was declining because of this. I spent the last half of 2013 drinking and pillaging like a Viking because that's how I coped with being unhappy. Now, I've tried to turn the battleship around. It's a slow process, but eventually, I'll correct myself. I've changed my lifestyle, started exercising and eating better, and I'm happier for it. I'm at the point though where I need to decide to go all in at my job and use my time off from work to pursue what makes me happy, which had always been Magic
and Music, the two things that I've done since I was 14 and truly makes me feel alive. I don't need school for any of those things. I also like to write about those things too.

Quitting school will mean I'll have to start paying back some of the loans and stuff, but, like redthirst once wisely told me, it's better to pull the plug on something after 3 years and have it hurt some than to end it after 5 and it hurts a lot more.

If you're going to school for an arts degree, you're better off doing nearly anything else. Thumbs up :)

It's just not worth the time and money unless you intend to get a STEM degree.

I mean, I've only ever felt that I could do 3 or 4 things really well : pornstar, writer, rock star, or card player.

Or all of the above.

Word.

I went to school for business when I was 18, then quit. Went back when I was 21 for architecture, then quit again. Then went a third time for digital art and finished because I felt obligated at that point. On the one hand, if I could return my degree and get my 30 grand back I would do it in a heartbeat. I learned absolutely nothing I couldn't have learned by Googling it. Ham's right. In
regards to an arts degree, "good" is very subjective. But on the other hand, I'm not washing dishes at a Denny's anymore and I have that extraordinarily expensive and subjectively "good" degree to thank for it. On the third hand (yes, three hands), repaying the loans for that education is technically an indentured servitude. So I guess the only thing I can actually say about it is the decision does deserve ALL your brain power. Not just about school. Magic and music might not make you happy forever. (There, I said it.) Or they might! Are they really what you want out of your life or are they just medicine for symptoms of something else?

Khaos I would say write down on paper who you want to be in 5/10/20 and 40 years. Then look at your current path and then write down in writing your path to get to who you want to be at those milestones. It will help you look past the right now and put a bit of focus on your future. It will help you look at your current path and see if it aligns with the person you want to be at those milestones, if it doesn't you change your current trajectory and figure out how to get on the path to be the person you want to be at the next milestone. Sometimes that slip of paper opens doors, some doors only open to certain slips of paper, some burn papers at the door because they require something else to open. Only the milestones you set for yourself will tell you what doors you'll need to crash thru to get there.

Porn is not a glamorous as it seems and the guys get paid much less.
If any one does decide to take up pornography as a profession, the real money is in gay porn. Most gay porn actors are ostensibly straight, its harder to find guys willing to take it it the dirt button for money than guys who are willing to plow chicks for money, and thus we run into the classic supply and demand curve.

thanks to nbw for the sig.
You do need to try to gay it up a little more.

You're like the least gay member of this clan.

And that's counting the fact that you voluntarily have sex with men.

aspire for something
Magic and music might not make you happy forever. (There, I said it.) Or they might! Are they really what you want out of your life or are they just medicine for symptoms of something else?
I don't believe they're symptoms of something else. I want to do something that doesn't feel like a job. There's a saying that goes something like "If your job is doing something you love, you'll never work a day in your life." That's what I
want.

If I wanted a "job," then I may as well continue to do what I'm doing now. Seriously. It'd be no better than being a cop, an architect, a whaler, a garbage man, etc. I've never once in my life wanted to actually do anything considered "normal." When I was a kid and somebody asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I never knew. I assumed that I would figure it out when I got older. In high school, the answer was the same - I didn't fucking know. But, by then, I knew what my passions were: cards and music. I dropped out of high school because I was smarter than the curriculum that was being force fed down my throat. I told myself that I would figure out what I wanted to do after I experienced "the real world." After working, partying, and making the typical 20-something mistakes everyone makes, I found myself at the bottom of the barrel. Those were tough times.

-Aside-

These tough times were the result of of being young, dumb, and full of cum. I landed a
job doing route sales for Snyder's of Hanover (awesome pretzels, btw) where I was making about $1,500 a week. That's a lot of money when you're 26. Unfortunately, I was pretty stupid. I drove a souped up Dodge Dakota with a Mopar V8, complete with headers and a killer exhaust. It was probably about 2 inches of the ground with the most insane low profile tires and rims. I was also dealing a ton of coke and basically living "the Scarface" life.

Until it all caught up with me. Some shit happened, which would probably fill up a book, but the bottom line was this: in one week, I lost my job, my car, my girl, and my place to live. Since I was so stupid, I hadn't saved any money. I practically had one foot in the gutter, one foot in civilization. It was rough. The worst night ever was staying in a house with no power and trying to find enough change to buy 2 Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers from Wendy's so I could feed myself and my 2 dogs. In fact, the only things I owned (besides my dogs) were a bag of
clothes, and my Legacy Red Deck. My rifle and guitar rig were, fortunately, at a buddy's house while all of this was going on.

-End Aside-

I landed a job at Sam's Club because at the time I would've worked anywhere. I just needed something, anything, to allow me to feed my dogs and myself. My brother let me stay on his couch for awhile and he, his roommate, and I would play Magic. Conflux was about to come out and they were both just budg-cajs. They wanted to play with all the multi-color goodness SoA had to offer, but I would constantly destroy them with Mono Red Burn. We played a lot of multiplayer and, I found out, you'd be surprised at how well Legacy Burn works when you can take out 2 players with all the damage you can deal. It's from those games that I got hooked back into Magic and went full retard when Zendikar came out.

Anyways, I contacted some old buddies of mine and once I had enough money saved from working at Sam's, the three of us rented a 3 bedroom
house (of which, both guys still rent and one of them happens to be my drummer now, so yay - there's always a place to practice).
also, bachelor pad == two roommates
Ah, but hear me out. Now, I love alone in a one bedroom apartment. My shit is clean, organized, and, for lack of a better word, nice. There actually hasn't been much crazy shit that's happened in this "true" bachelor pad.

But this place....we affectionately refer to it as "The Defiant House." I've had some of the craziest night of my life there. Beer pong tournaments every other day. Parties so crazy that the cops were called, only to stay a hang for a bit because they couldn't believe I was blasting KISS's "I Stole Your Love" (They claimed that it was unreal that a person
my age would know an "obscure" KISS song.). The disgusting sex acts that occurred there were the stuff of legend. Random drunk chick walking by the house? Yep, me and my two roommates, plus my best friend, talked her into coming inside the house where we ran a train on her for a few hours. Thank Purphoros the video footage no longer exists.

You get the idea how crazy this house was.

Anyways, after a year or two of this kind of debauchery, I started to settle down a little bit. I got a girlfriend and something just called to me to start school. It was great for awhile.

But now, I dunno. I feel like I'm Rip Van Winkle waking up from years of slumber. What have I been doing for the last few years? Running in a hamster wheel? Do I need to go to school to work a "job?" I already have one of those. I have skills from Sam's Club that I could take anywhere with me. It's just....I feel like everything I have been doing for the last couple of years hasn't been me. Well, it has been me,
but it's like my "brain" was making the decisions and not my "heart." I want to do something in life that I feel with my heart AND my brain. And I don't think I'm gonna get there by going to school. I really don't. If I am ever going to get what I want, it's going to be the same way I've gotten everything else: by using what I know and busting my ass with everything I got to get things done.

I already know that the corporate life isn't for me. But, right now it pays my bills. I can play ball with that. School doesn't. And yet, I also know the academic life isn't for me either. It's the same as the corporate lifestyle. It's RESTRICTING. I want to be able to say "fuck." I want to be able to completely be myself. I'm sick of having to censor myself. It's bad enough that I have to do it at work, but come the fuck on, I can't write "Martin Luther waved a big fat fucking middle finger at the Catholic Church and pissed on the charred remains of its oppressive
hold on the masses" without being told that what I'm saying "isn't appropriate."

It's like, shit, why don't you give an artist a canvas and tell him to paint a fucking picture. But first, remove half the colors from his palette and tell him that certain shades of brown is unacceptable.

It's just getting to be too much. I can't work a 9 or 10 hour day doing what I'm doing and then try to read 30-40 pages in a textbook about how our government works. It works the same way as it does as Sam's Club: it has all these great ideas and lays out a "foolproof' foundation on how to run a country/business, yet all the people at the top got there by schmoozing and rubbing elbows with other influential people while lying to the masses and backstabbing anyone who got in their way. I know this because I'm guilty of doing the same fucking thing. And really when you look at it, all any country is these days is a glorified fucking corporation...

And now I need to write a paper on the
government. Oh, but wait, first let me censor myself and make it sound academic....

I'm ranting. Like, really ranting. I don't even know how I got to this point.
Kaze
Bro, I love you man, but I'm Khaos. Kaze is a mackerel.
Porn is not a glamorous as it seems and the guys get paid much less.
Yeah, but they get paid in pussy!

Kaze could use
it too
Yes he could.

I started this whole thing with a point, but now I believe I'm utterly sidetracked.

This is a decision I'm going to be making very soon, (although my gut tells me I've already made it), but I feel really good about posting this. All of this. For one, it allows you guys to know me better. Not everyone knows a lot about my real history. This sorta turned into a "True Hollywood Story: Khaos Edition" for a minute, but you guys also know now the reasons why I started school and why it's starting to wear down on me. If any of this can apply to anyone, then I hope it helps. If any of this sours your opinion of me, then fuck you (but I still love you). Part of trying to better myself is learning how to be honest with myself, because I lied to myself for so long about things. It's the worst kind of deception. If you can't be honest with yourself, then who can you be honest with? But part of learning how to do this is to not only open up and own up to your
mistakes, but to also share those mistakes with other people. It's the most naked you'll ever feel while keeping your clothes on. It's certainly not easy to do, but, whatever you guys think about me after I hit "Submit" on this post, I know I'll sleep better at night for having the balls to share this. And that's not anything you'll ever learn at school, at your job, or from Google. That's something you earn from life experience.

But really, Madding, I'm trying to get my shit together. It just feels like I'm a square peg trying to fit in a round hole.

But I also have a feeling that if I did things your way, I'd end up as unhappy as you. What's the point of even existing if you can't be happy?

I'm not a bum. I have a decent job, even though I complain a lot about it.

Fuck cards and music? Okay. Let me just throw away the few things I actually enjoy. I wonder how many people told Zakk Wylde or Jimi Hendrix to "fuck music."

you're not defined by your job. let it feed your hobbies and life and move on.

or if you really want to be one of the lucky ones who have a career doing something they love, i suggest exploring your options parallel to your "normal" life, not dropping everything because you're in a funk. music and art is gonna fuck you in the ass but a degree will help.

I got an art degree and consider myself successful and happy at the age of 24. All degrees in college are bullshit (a degree now a days simply represents to a future employer that you were capable of dealing with bullshit for 4 years and not quitting). It's about having the drive and motivation to create lemonade from lemons. Then again, I was fortunate enough to find my passion at an earlier age than most people.

I don't use my degree for my profession -- but the fact I have one is good enough for anywhere I've applied. They haven't even cared what it was in. Most employers like to see it because it shows you can finish something. I have a degree in Biblical studies with a minor in music, was a pastor for 7 years, and now am the Ops Director for an A/C company. My past work/studies have nothing to do with what I'm doing now. I have a wife, a beautiful daughter, and my outlet is Church/Volunteering and MTG/Gaming. I don't have all my stuff together by any means, but sticking with something to completion is a big deal no matter what you're trying to accomplish. Keep on keeping on brother =/

I'm actually siding with Madding on this, but without being so harsh about it.

How good are you at school? Are you quitting because you don't like it or because you aren't good at it? Plenty of people say that school just isn't for them, and some of them are right. Others are just using it as an excuse to satisfy their noncompletionist attitude. Which side of the fence are you on? And be honest with yourself.

There's nothing wrong with working at Sam's Club or any other part of the service industry for that matter. But now's the time to REALLY figure out what it is you want to do with your life. This is really something you should have done years ago, but for whatever reason did not. Is it because you were consistently keeping the bar low for yourself? Can you really live with a 9-5 job in the service industry for the rest of your life, or is there something else you want to be doing?

What degree are you
pursuing currently? The problem you're having seems to come from the fact that you STILL don't have a clue what you want to do. You mentioned it was to climb up the chain at Sam's Club, but you sound unenthusiastic about that. Do you just have a jaded opinion of what your life should be like vs the reality of life in general? Are you trying to fit your square peg in the round hole of life?

Magic and Music may make you happy, but they don't pay the bills. There are plenty of people that make money off of the two, but Magic doesn't pay jack shit to even the best pro players and Music only pays an enormous amount to those fortunate enough to be at the top of the industry.

You sound a bit like me in that you get bored with things after awhile and are constantly looking for a change of scenery (a "grass is greener" kind of guy). If this is the case, feel free to talk to me more about it here. I can offer some insight for this. What I can say is that turning your hobby into a job is usually
the worst thing you could do because most people get burned out on it VERY quickly. There's nothing worse that hating a hobby you once loved.

I'm just at that point where my job wants to pull me one way and school wants to pull me in another.

I really appreciate what you guys are saying. There's nothing more sobering than putting all of this out there and getting smacked with some hard truths. Truth be told, I read Madding's response and physically flinched.

Had that been told to me IRL, I would've swung a fist on reflex.

But there's no hard feelings.

In fact, I really meant "thank you" when I said it.

But anyways, and this is something I neglected to mention, I failed last semester due to the funk I was in. And I'm pretty sure I won't be able to salvage this semester either. That's just adding to the stress of trying to juggle both a demanding job and online classes. It's enough to make me just want to say, "Fuck it," and walk away from one of them. Except, of course, the job pays the bills. And saying "fuck it,&
quot; is probably the worst way to make an important decision. I mean, the "fuck it" method is great when trying to pick between 2 different kinds of beers, just not when making a life altering decision.

I love playing music, too, but I chose to get an engineering degree instead of chasing the entertainment dragon. I said to Khaos that arts degrees are worthless (and an associate degree even more so) but that isn't true of all degrees.

I couldn't be an engineer without the appropriate degree, and I wouldn't make engineer's money as an artist, so it was a worthwhile pursuit for me.

Contrast that with my lady, who took the "I'm going to follow my heart" path and got an English degree. She never used it, has had to work hard to pay off student debt, and ended up working as a personal trainer after she got into weight lifting with me. She had to go through several out-of-pocket certifications to learn all she needed to be good at her job. She could have learned it all with a BS in kinesiology and gotten started much sooner.

People have come from and dealt with a lot worse work/school situations than you currently are, and go on to become successful. Quit being a bitch and figure a way to make it work. Better planning, better self control, it's time to make sacrifices in order for you to be able juggle both work and school. You seem to be looking for short term gratification, when one of the most mature things you can do is understand the decisions you make today not just affect tomorrow, but they affect your kids further down the line. Suck it up, and make it work... It will build character. Which is invaluable.

What direction is your job pulling you in, other than "I'm a job and don't care if you have school"?

Here's point #1 about having a job you love: it's still a job. The ups come with the downs. I wouldn't give my job up for anything, but it still makes me want to rip my hair out from time to time. "You'll never work a day in your life" is a platitude. You will work. It ain't all pizza parties. But there are pizza parties, and they make the crap worth putting up with.

Point #2 about having a job you love is "shit doesn't just fall in your lap". You have to try like hell to get your dream job. Unless your dream job is flipping burgers. Then we need to talk about your standards.

Val, I can't think of anything else that I want to do. It's like, every year goes by and I just think to myself, "Is this it? Is this really all that there is to life?" I've always had a mind for survival, first and foremost. The bills got to get paid, I have to feed myself, etc. After the important stuff is done, i.e the work, then there is play, i.e magic, beer, music, etc. It's just that for the work part, I'm not excited about anything, no other profession, nothing. It's just a means to end: survival. I've been wired that way since I was little.

As for working at Sam's Club, well, being in quasi-management isn't so bad. I'm the Meat/Deli supervisor. I'm one step away from being a salaried manager (the lowest paid salaried manager makes at least 60k a year without bonus). My department alone makes more than an average Publix makes in a year. My store alone makes over $100 million a year. If I wanted
to go to school for business, I'd probably be wasting my money because I'm learning so much just from my experience in this business. This is a job where I have an opportunity to grow and move up if I so choose. And I know I can. I just don't know if I'd be happy doing just this for the rest of my life.

As for my "degree," I'm just going for a General. That's it. I pissed off one of the counselors about a year ago because she told me that I need to pick a major and decide what I want to do so it'd be easier for me to pick classes. I didn't know what to tell her then and I wouldn't know what to tell her now.

Which leads me back to the post I made earlier. I need to decide if I'm going to go all-in with my job and divert some time into this band on the side (which is actually something I am fully capable of doing even after a 10 work day, unlike school) with the off chance of it blossoming into something worthwhile. Or I do nothing but school and work, with the gamble that school
either wastes my time and drives me insane or it enables me to achieve something else at some random point in my life.

You do you boo. The "fuck it" method is a perfectly valid way of making life decisions.

Just corporate bullshit. Like, Regional Fresh Manager is coming in tomorrow, which happens to be my day off, but that's alright, I'll just come in for 12 hours anyway. I'll just end up cutting some time later in the week.

Yes, my job doesn't care about school. But, I'm making a lot more money now than I was a couple of years ago because I bust my ass for this place.

Purp, thank you for your generic, but "tough guy" sounding piece of advice. I will do my best to "stop being a bitch" and "build character.&
quot;

Bitch, please. I have more than enough character to go around. This isn't about short term gratification. This is about "is this what I really want to be doing.". I know how to plan. And I'm most certainly aware about decisions that I make today will impact my future.

I'm in the process of trying to decide what's right for me. I probably made a mistake by divulging a lot of personal information today, but there are those here that have known me for awhile and I wanted some of you guys to know where I'm coming from. I never said "this is what I'm doing." But it is something I'm seriously considering.

edit: but, yes, you are right about degrees being a bullshit piece of paper.

Not getting a degree is the dumbest thing you can do. You think you can climb a corporate ladder without one? I'm sorry, but eventually there will be a time when someone who has a degree will be competing for the same position you are, and by default the person with the degree will win.

Nope, it's not what you know. It's who you know.

Yeah that's true, but you are overlooking the fact that WHO you know, might have someone above him who truly makes the decisions. That's how a corporate structure works.

Degrees in non technical fields are basically worthless. Engineering/math/science are the only ones worth getting basically.
