1 Banishing Light
2 Chains
3 Toil//Trouble
2 Wear//Tear
4 Satyr Firedancer
3 Chandra, Pyromancer

This kind of sideboard makes those matchups more even postboard except against B/W I think you just have to win game1 and try to steal game2 or 3. Your maindeck is just fine.

I need a quick opinion on my list for my specific meta:

[deck]Creatures
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Young Pyromancer

Spells
2 Chained to the Rocks
3 Warleader's Helix
3 Stoke the Flames
4 Boros Charm
4 Skullcrack
4 Lightning Strike
4 Magma Jet
2 Searing Blood
3 Shock

Lands
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph
2 Battlefield Forge
1 Temple of Silence
3 Mutavault
9 Mountain

Sideboard
3 Boros Reckoner
3 Eidolon of the Great Revel
2 Chained to the Rocks
1 Deicide
1 Wear//Tear
2 Glare of Heresy
3 Anger of the Gods[/deck]

My meta is 25% aggro (Naya/GW/WW/Rabble), 30% Green Stompy, 30% control (mix of PC and D-S versions) and Jund Walkers, and 15% everything else (rouge decks, Mono Blue and Black are unpopular).

Some explanation into my choices:
- Reckoner and Anger deals with both aggro and Green Stompy at the same time. Playing Anger hurts my own creatures, but if I have them I wouldn't be
playing creatures (except maybe Reckoner) until after Anger. Even if I kill my own creatures, it always hurts them more than it hurts me.
- Glare is very flexible against control, removing Ram, Fiendslayer, Archangel, D-Sphere, and Elspeth.
- Regarding Eidolon, should it be sided in against Mono Blue?

I haven't played burn since before Journey so it should be interesting.

Whoever thinks that rabble red is a bad MU for burn

Postby HK1997 » Fri Aug 29, 2014 8:15 am

This is what a rabble red player wrote me after being beat 2-0 in R1 of the daily:

"FunnyJS: Last 10~ matches ive played have been against this stupid fucking deck. Tired of wasting money on this fucking game to get matched against a 0% win rate deck over and over again uninstalling it now"

Then he disconnected and I'm guessing he is not showing for R2...

Didn't realize they were doing some sort of standard championship event on mtgo. I haven't been grinding MTGO for a month, so I don't have a feel for the metagame. How have y'all been adjusting to it, and how is it in general? Top 6 decks are Mono U, B/W, RabbleRed, Walkers, MonoBlack, and Burn according to mtgoldfish.

Its been a blast, though I think it will take some adjusting for those on the grinding control path (if your wondering, yes the top 6 decks are accurate - though I do see UW win a fair bit during the Asian Pacific timezone which goes unreported on goldfish) if you plan on playing the championship expect them .

I've been running without the Chains mainboard too, and I gotta be honest, I really miss them. There's been several match-ups where I wish I would have had them. Has that happened to you?

Yeah they're nice to have, but I don't really miss them too much... feels like enchantment hate is everywhere these days. If I was going to bring them back in, I'd cut the 3 searing blood, perhaps a shock as well for 3/4 chains. Right now I feel like they're fine in the sideboard though.

Me too :) I would also  to see some Constructed vids from Kaits :D It's my B/Day soon (Sept 16th) maybe that will sway him! :)

Kaits - please post Constructed vids for my B/Day present :) I'd especially  to see the Burn match up from the UW perspective but anything would be fantastic! :)

P.S. While I'm asking for B/Day gifts - if
you see this Zem a final blast of Burn vids before rotation would be fantastic! RDW or Burn in Modern would be fab too! Both would be well recieved on SCG too! :)

P.P.S. I know this is a bit off topic, sorry :D

Could be cool to ask MDU to do it so we have parallel videos from both sides.... (DtR's first "Versus" Video :D)

That said, I just realize I'm in an SE with you at I'm typing this, so I might be your first victim either way

EDIT: Wasn't meant to be - some stupid GW Deck got in my way... :frown:

What is the secret to beating B/W? I feel like I've tried every strategy in every situation with 100% loss. I feel like I'm just playing the matchup wrong, or mulling aggressively for the incorrect cards.

On the draw I feel like I need a shock or similar thing to deal with a packrat. Then I need Chains for desecration demon, and I need stoke for bloodbaron. I can't race any of those 3 cards, and If they have a threat I can't answer I just lose.

I'm still running this...and looking at the top decks, it seems like my deck is still pretty well suited to the metagame. Am I missing anything? I guess Glare of Heresy might be too narrow and could be Mizzium Mortars #2?

Played MOCS today and performed rather poorly because I decided to metagame against Ux Devo, BW, Jund Walkers and Rabble red.

I faced BW four times beat them three times and lost once because I misplayed, rather silly one as well - for some reason even though I KNEW he was a discard deck I decided not too take 2 damage from my shock land, this choice eventually leads me too my lost after he discards the only burn spell I had in my hand at the time.

I faced Jund Walker once which I beat.

I faced GW which crushed me due too my set-up.

I faced GB Devo, just like for GW I wasn't optimized to face them.

And finally I lost vs the mirror since I wasn't running as many high impact cards as he was which meant my top-deck we're worst for it.

- - - - - -

What annoys me is that the upper bracket had all the Rabble Red, Jund Walkers, Ux Devo MU which I needed but the initial loss vs GW (on G3) had me placed in a
group which I struggle to combat.

So everyone knows burn won't be a thing, but maybe the Mono Red Control deck (that we always wanted burn to be) will be possible.

RW Control

Postby HK1997 » Sun Aug 31, 2014 3:00 pm

The funfactory, consisting of Lazer, dauntless, MDU and myself have been going a little crazy with some more "out there"-ideas. One of them has been a long dream of ours: RW Control

So far I've taken it 3-1 and 4-0 in Dailies. A total of three losses so far (2x R1 of SE's and one in the first daily) have been against GW, Gb devo and BW midrange. These probably are the hallmark weak matchups for this RW control deck, where I feel I am not favored. Here is the report of the last daily. I hope some people will jump on board and give it a go to see if they can close the gaps vs this current online meta.

R1 vs Jund Planeswalkers
G1 my Assemble the legion on T5 outright killed him, since he didnt have charm in hand and didnt draw it afterwards. I was holding up BC for the rest of the game and just keeping his board clean. Won on 4 life, playing thru Nissas and her tokens as well.
G2 I was able to stick
a Chandra on T4, after kiling a dork, his courser swung for two at Chandra, next turn it died to LS and chandra +1. From there on the game was also pretty much over since he didnt have an answer to Chandra and I was once again able to hold up my BC for the rest of the game until I -7'ed her at 8 loyalty for the win. Until that point he did his best with Xenagos, another courser and Nissa to catch up, but it wasnt enough.

R2 vs Rabble-Red 2-1
Not much to say here, besides that he had an explosive first game and I had a bad hand with little removal. Closed out the other two games in good 'ol dominating fashion.

R3 vs Mono-U Devo 2-1
G1 was a dominating win for me and G2 He got me where the combination of 3x mutavault and unanswered MoW were just too much for Elspeth to handle. I decided to board her out for G3 and was a lot happier.
Very close, grindy control game G3 and a lot of fun. I like the assemble + sheep defense. Not drawing a cttr as an answer to his MoW doesnt end the game. I got lucky
that his NVSx2 only hit lands. One of those as a 4 dmg spell during one window he had, would have given him the game. An overloaded rift would have done it as well tho.

R4 vs RW burn
G1 was a fair win for me. He got me G2, where I got impatient and blasted a Helix into his open mana, because I thought I was behind anyways (I had to remove his early Chandra before I drew the Helix) and he was not looking like he was ever going tap out again. G3 he got stuck on 3 mana and that ended the finals pretty quickly. Since he didnt bother next-leveling me by boarding out his YPs and Phoenix's, I wasnt punished for leaving in some chains and searing bloods.

Here is the 75 I ran in that daily:

[deck=HK's RW Control]
Planeswalkers 3
1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
3 Chandra, Pyromaster

Enchantments 5
3 Chained to the Rocks
2 Assemble the Legion

Burn 28
3 Searing Blood
4 Boros Charm
4 Lightning Strike
3 Magma Jet
4 Shock
3 Skullcrack
2 Stoke the Flames
4 Warleader's Helix

Lands 23
2
Battlefield Forge
8 Mountain
3 Mutavault
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph
2 Temple of Silence

Sideboard 15
2 Glare of Herecy
3 Anger of the Gods
1 Skullcrack
3 Toil // Trouble
2 Pillar of Light
1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
3 Nyx-Fleece Ram
[/deck]

I would like to thank all three for helping me form my 75, as it is truly a team-effort, while we are tweaking the other decks, ideas and directions. I'm certain MDU's version will hit the boards as soon as he is done turning his focus on tuning another deck, which they are working on. :munch:
Also, stay tuned for MDU's set of Videos next week of his runs with RW control.

Last notes:
Yes Elspeth on 23 lands and 1 MD is crazy.
Yes I'm ready to swap her with Skullcrack in the side.
No I don't want to run any creatures MD or in the side.
No, I don't want to run 24 lands, as I am greedy.
Yes, 4x Blood and 3x Chains will get punished every now
and then vs UW Control.
Yes, mid-range is an Issue, especially BW.
Yes, Red-Aggro is still easy as pie.
No, I would'nt dream of boarding out Chandra, Pyromaster & Assemble vs Jund Walkers. They take out all dreadbores and only run 2 Golgari Charms. My 4 BCs say I have a good chance of making something stick.
No, I will not post a Sideboarding guide quite yet, as I'm figuring it out as I go with every match and I also believe few SB'ing-guides are set in stone. In fact - Most aren't and everyone is well advised to analyse every matchup themselves during sideboarding. I am most likely still making mistakes (like leaving in the Elspeth vs Mono U).
Yes, two events don't make this a good deck, but it is a hell of a lot of fun to play for anyone looking for a different angle on burn, a different playstyle and a challenge.

As a tip to anyone taking a crack at this deck: Play a LOT more laid back. See your burn as counters, that let you decide at the EoT, what permanents he is allowed to have. BUT
don't miss the signs, that your hand, draw and board state is NOT going to let you play the Control game and you need to play classic burn to win.

Just want to give a shoutout and thanks to MDU. I have had nothing but fantastic results with this Fire alarm Variation
Lands 24
09x Mountain
04x Temple of Triumph
04x Battlefield Forge
03x Mutavault

Creatures 08
04x Young Pyromancer
04x Chandra’s Phoenix

Others 05
03x Chained to the Rocks
02x Raise the Alarm

Burns 23
04x Shock
04x Stoke the Flames
04x Warleader’s Helix
04x Lightning Strike
04x Boros Charm
03x Skullcrack

Sideboard 15
04x Satyr Firedancer
03x Chanda, Pyromaster
03x Searing Blood
02x Glare of Heresy
01x Pillar of Light
01x Skullcrack
01x Chained to the Rocks

I only made one change: -1 Mutavault for 1 mountain. Budget is not an issue here, I'm just not 100% on running 4 mutavaults.

Things I learned: This deck is only as good as you pilot it; I apologize If I am being obvious here, but the sequencing of lands, and spell drops at end of turns is SO CRUCIAL to this deck.

I have found myself, losing for casting one shock too early for example. It makes me appreciate the skill you guys have even more. A lot of fun to play, and one interesting note: I have had no need to sideboard
Anger of the gods sideboard; I don't need it. And rabble red I am winning more than 50% of the time. G/W with splash of black, has been kicking my ass though.

Thanks so much everyone!

Glad you like the deck, JulianFrank. MDU did a lot of work on this variation indeed so your shoutout is justified - he's an exceptionally strong player with an open mind for crazy ideas, and one of the many reasons why this forum is so much fun to contribute to.

Thankfully Raise the Alarm is still a little bit of a DtR secret tech even though it now got picked up in the SCG circle. It's main value is the insane interaction with Stoke the Flames and YP (very often Stoke ends up being a Shock that costs 0 and deals 4 :D ). It's definitely good for a few more weeks until standard rotates and god knows what we will be playing...

What annoys me is that the upper bracket had all the Rabble Red, Jund Walkers, Ux Devo MU which I needed but the initial loss vs GW (on G3) had me placed in a group which I struggle to combat.
Welcome to tournament magic. If I dodge Neal Oliver round 2, I'm in a great spot to WIN my WMCQ(as Isaac Spears did with Rabble Red). Instead, I lose to him and face mono-bad matchups scrapping an 8-2 record together.

At SCG Vegas, if I dodge GW agro, I play against very beatable hate cards instead of unbeatable hate deck and scrape a 7-3 record together while modified boss sligh wins.

See a pattern?

If anything, I learned that my strategy is correct to try and win coin flips because the guys that do and get the correct pairings have won
the tournaments I've attended with slight variations of the same deck and I've still managed to cash said events.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

[url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ_BVeo3iV0&list=UUOED7KvwLH_yozWSu-QWADg]G2 Jund Monsters vs Fire Alarm Standard SE 7435904
<-- Salty, he tilts and throws away the last game as well
G3 UW Control vs Fire Alarm Standard SE 7435904 <-- Two Rev, 2x Rams, 2x Angels and 1x Jace later... (I should add I also failed to draw any removals)

I played a similar list HK posted (less finishers) through many events and cashed everyone, though I decided to chastise the deck and cut all my stokes for additional lands and MJ for the MOCS since I figured it would be vs BW, Walkers and */2 creatures all day (I was wrong, so my lack of removals and high impact spells costed me). Anyhow It looks clunky but G1 lots of decks just die too either a resolved Assemble or Chandra esp. with Boros Charm protection - the decks which don't you can just
point damage over-top

Hi guys, just wanted to report on my WMCQ.

Played the following (sorry for being too retarded to post the list properly):

Lands (23)
4x Sacred Foundry
4x Mutavault
4x Temple of Triumph
3x Battlefield forge
8x Mountain

Creatures (8)
4x [card]Chandra's Phoenix[/card]
4x Young Pyromancer

Enchantments (4)
4x Chained to the rocks

Instants&Sorceries (25)
3x [card]Warleader's Helix[/card]
3x Stoke the Flames
3x Shock
4x Magma Jet
4x Boros Charm
4x Skullcrack
4x Lightning Strike

SB:
4x[card:
6zpsnrs2] Eidolon of the Great Revel[/card]
4x Satyr Firedancer
2x Searing Blood
2x Glare of Heresy
2x Chandra, Pyromaster
1x Banishing Light

Some thoughts on the deck:
Playing fourth Mutavault didn't bite me in the last few tournaments I played and I really like having as much of them as possible since there is a lot of UW in my meta. I don't like Searing Blood in the main deck for the same reason, but couldn't bring myself to cut the chains since they are so good in all the other MUs. Decided to cut the more expensive spells since I lost more than once not being able to cast everything I hold in hand. Also, Magma Jet is insane and brings many hands from unplayable to fine or great, I don't understand the reason for cutting it (even after I read Sperling's article). Everything else is standard.

Onto the tournament. I'm from
Croatia so it wasn't very big, around 50 players and that means 6 rounds. I got a bye from the trials the day before so I had the first round to scout the room and what everyone was playing(there was a lot of burn and UW).

Round 2:
BURN (so unexpected...) 2-1
I really hate this MU since a lot of it comes to topdecking skills. First game we were mostly trading resources(and playing draw-go) until he drew 3 helixes. I managed to crack the first one, but had no answer to the rest. Other two games were mostly the same, we hardly saw our sideboard cards so not much changed. Still hate the MU.
Boarding:
+2 Chandra, +4 Eidolon, +2 Searing Blood
-4 Chains, -3 Shock, -1 Boros Charm

As for the SB plan, i wasn't really sure on how much chains matter post board and if he had any reckoners. I might have left a few for second game but moved all out when I saw nothing.

Round 3:
UW with spheres (winner of the whole WMCQ) 1-2
I don't mind playing UW preboard but postboard games are very hard and you have
to draw really good hands and hope he stumbles. First game he was on the play, he syncopated my Phoenix (not sure if it's right to play around that at all), dissolved my next two plays and then reved with negate backup (in the main, yes). Another rev, and we're off to game 2! Second game was much different, I had Eidolon turn 2 and Phoenix turn 3. He sphered the eidolon and played a sheep turn 4. Again, he had negate for my glare, but pyromancer with boros charm backup finished the game soon. Third game again, syncopate my eidolon into dissolve on magma jet into two sheeps. Not much you can do against that.
Boarding:
+2 Glare, +4 Eidolon, +2 Chandra, +1 Banishing Light
-3 Chains, -3 Shock, -2 Helix, -1 YP

Again, Sb plan is strange. I'm not sure on how much chains I should have postboard since he plays at least 4 sheep and a few AAOT. And I cut a YP since I lose some spells and he's not always great against UW. And Helixes tend to be slow, I like having more cheap spells to strain his mana.

nRound 4:
BW 2-0
Not much to say about this one, we played a few more postboard games after I won and it was 2-2. Basically, if he curves out with discard into sin collector into demon into baron/obzedat I can't win. If he durdles, he's dead. More or less. First game he drew wrong half of his deck since he didn't know what I was on. Second game, 2 eidolons finished him quickly.
Boarding:
+4 Eidolon, +1 Banishing Light
-3 Shock, -1 Chains, -1 Helix

He only has demons to remove with chains (and some brimaz postboard). I swapped one for B. light since he also has B. lights. Not sure if that's okay, but came up in second game.

Round 5:
MonoB 2-1
I had the best breakers of all 3-1 guys so this was supposed to be my win and draw-in. first game I died to his demon swings with 2 chains in hand and two temples + forge on board. Must be nice. Second game I was really surprised to see his connections still in deck. He played one on third turn and one on fourth, then a gary for 6 when I had no crack.
Still that was way too slow and I got him a few turns later. Third
game, he played 2 duress and 2 thoughtseize in first few turns but was stuck on three lands for too long and I had a crack for his eventual gary.
Boarding:
+4 Eidolon, +1 Banishing Light, +2 Chandra
-3 Shock, -3 Helix, -1 Boros Charm

i managed to draw the last round into the top8 but I was the last seed so I had to start second every game. There were 2 burns (one of them myself), 1 hexproof ( ), 1 BW, 1 monoB, 2 UW and Rabble Red.

Unfortunately I lost in the quarters to another BW. 0-2

First game I kept a hand with 2 cracks, charm, chains and three lands (mutavault, scry and mountain). Knowing what I was playing against, it was a solid hand. That's where Thoughtseize comes in. He removed my chains, played a pack rat turn 2, and while I drew Stoke/land/Phoenix/Phoenix, he killed me with rats. Second game I mulled to 6, and he had
2 discards into sin collector into removal for my pyro into baron/obzedat/baron. And that was it! I guess that matchup really depends on the amount of hand distruption by the opponent. Boarding plan was the same as before.

Any suggestions on the deck or boarding plans is appreciated since there is one more WMCQ to attend and maybe qualify! :)
