I managed to again top 8 on a 3-1 record with jund aggro and then lost in the top 8 to the mirror. I'm not one to blame luck most of the time but g1 I mull to 5. G2 on t2 he drops 3 bte's and a boar. t3 a mangler. t4 Aristocrat. Yeah I can't compete with magical christmas land like that.
I think you can blame his good luck on that one. Even 2 BTE's is tough. 3 is just gross.

Also, I didn't realize you could build legacy burn for so cheap. If you don't play the Lavamancer one (which was apparently still good enough to win an SCG event) the entire deck is around $200 even, and I've already
got most of it.

Does anyone know if burn is any good in legacy right now?
Burn's mainly a meta deck. If a lot of people are running honest decks like Goblins/Merfolk/Maverick/Jund/Affinity/RUx Delver/BUG Aggro, then you tend to do very well. If there are a lot of decks like Dredge/Tendrils combo/Countertop/Counterhelm/Reanimator/Dragon Stompy/Show and Tell, then you tend to be a walking pincushion. I find the 10-12 fetch variants much more stable and less all-in than the fetchless builds. It gives you access to really solid cards like Searing Blaze and Grim Lavamancer, while still allowing you to put pressure on people with Burn Spells.

I've kinda dropped Burn in Melbourne, because the meta is quite awkwardly placed for me at the moment. I've been tinkering with RW Burn, while I wait to save up enough for Force of Will and Volcanic Island, so I can run UR
Delver instead. Not losing to N combo decks is quite nice, and I still get to give Lands players the shits with Price of Progress. Card's really unfair against them.

EDIT: I can post both my Mono-Red and my RW Burn lists if people want to know my burn style. My Mono-Red is similar to Patrick Sullivan's list, minus the Flame Rift
We'll see later today. :) I'm entering a (probably small) Legacy tournament in 1.5 hours with a cheap burn deck. Decklist and some thoughts can be found earlier in this thread.
Best of luck sir, let me know how you go. If you want to practise, then I should be free all of next week.

I beat turbo fog with hellrider and burn.
Then it must have had bad draws or a bad deck in general. Most tend to run sweepers and Witchbane Orb.
That's quite insulting, suggesting that I only won through luck and that my opponent had bad draws. Just because a deck runs answers doesn't mean it will beat another deck 100%. Following that logic, esper should be the strongest deck because it runs answers for everything.

I was trying to propose that two ways around fog was hellrider and burn.

With sasky here, especially as Rx Variants are the worst or second worst matchup for turbo-fog.

So who is all going to go dominate FNM tonight? Probably already under way for you east coasters. I'll be taking Jund aggro again tonight.
I'll try to do my best at the GPT. Going there in 2 hours.

Yesterday I managed to go in top 8 in a modern tournament before dropping to: 1) date with gf 2) Kiki-Jiki opponent.

Happy birthday windstrider! :fourhorsemenoftheapocalypse:

That thing is so cool I'll just abuse it. Someone's birthday? Horsemen. Someone wins something? Horsemen. Ham gets through another day without spanking it? Horsemen. Zem bragposts? Horsemen.

The only issue is when a newbie asks how epic redthirst's crank is. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Horsemen? I dunno, still feels short.

Happy Birthday windstrider--do something this weekend.

@legacy burn: Since I put a list together a couple of years ago, I've run it in several local events. Here's what you should know, you'll steal a few wins no matter what the meta is. However, if the meta features lots of combo, you're going to struggle. Honestly, it's a list where the sideboard is far more important than the MD is.

Still, it is incredibly fun, and games go fast enough you can do some things in between rounds.

I was running all in red so i didn't have much of either lol.

So, for a meta filled with control and midrange would you guys recommend boros aggro (22 land RDW splashing for thalia, boros charm, nearheath pilgrim, singleton slayers' stronghold) or an old school Big Red (topping out at 5 with zealous conscripts, hound of griselbrand, pyreheart wolves etc)?

I'd want to run boros midrange like Alex's list but i dont' have restos so its' not an option unfortunately

As a side note, I want Volcanic Hammer back in Standard. Why? So that I can have a really good excuse to yell "IT'S HAMMER TIME!"

I don't even care that Searing Spear is better in every regard.

Windstrider and my brother both have the same birthday. So, tonight I'm holding a birthday party for my brother and I got him an awesome present - a foil Prime Speaker Zegana (The fucker is nuts about that card - he plays Rafiq Birthing Pod in EDH and Prime Speaker Bant in Standard)! I've secured 2 giant bottles of vodka, made forty jello shots, and my girl made "Titty Sprinkle" cupcakes, a la Morgan Freeman. I have also bought 2 bottles of mead that I will be drinking in windstrider's honor.

I once passed a foil Prime Speaker to pick a Deathpact angel for a draft pick when I was in Orzhov.

So, a small report on that Legacy tournament I went to today. I played a cheap burn deck, no fetches since I have access to only four relevant ones and I felt it wasn't enough for running them, Grim Lavamancers and/or Searing Blazes. I would've liked to have them in the deck, but what can you do? Anyway, here's the deck:
Mono Red Burn
[deck]19 Mountain
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Chain Lightning
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Fireblast
4 Price of Progress
4 Goblin Guide
4 Hellspark Elemental
4 Keldon Marauders
3 Sulfuric Vortex
2 Magma Jet

Sideboard
4 Smash to Smithereens
4 Pyroblast
4 Faerie Macabre
3 Volcanic Fallout[/deck]
We had only 14 participants, which was a bit disappointing. This was the decks:
Decks
3x various Jund builds (one was the winner)
2x BGW Rock
Aggro Loam
UW Miracles (top 4)
Mono Red Burn
12 post (top 4)
nOmnitell (2nd place)
Goblins
Bug Control
Some artifact homebrew
TES
So, pretty decent matchups for me, but my inexperience with the format and my deck (first Legacy tournament ever) showed.

Match 1: BGW Rock

Decided to mulligan my first hand, shouldn't have done it. I got to 5 and kept a no-lander with very low casting costs. Shouldn't have done that either. Took two rounds before I saw my first land. Managed to get my opponent down to 5 before he won. Second game I won. But in third he got down a Knight of the Reliquary and a Tarmogoyf and that was it.

Match 2: Aggro Loam

I should have won the first game, but I made such a stupid mistake I'm a bit ashamed to write it down. I had him down to 7, he has lethal stuff on the board and more of less tapped out. I untap with three lands, a Rift Bolt and a Fireblast in hand. And what did I do? Right, suspend the fraking Rift Bolt! What the hell was I thinking? So I lost that one. The second game he had to mulligan
down to four and I won that one. Third game I got him down to 5 before he managed Loam back enough lands for a lethal kill with Seismic Assault.

Match 3: Bug Control

Don't remember much from this one, I think I kept some questionable hands in this match. I won the first, lost the second to Tarmogoyfs, stalled a bit on the third (I think this was one of the questionable hand games) and lost to Goyfs again.

Match 4: One of the Junds

First game I steamrolled over him. Second game became very grindy, with both down to 5, but he had lots of counters on a Jitte and stabilized and won. Didn't see that Jitte in the first game so I hadn't sided in my Smashes. So they went in in the third game, which I won. Got really great draws in that one.

So, 1-3 in the end. I made at least one serious mistake, and I blame the rest on inexperience.

My thoughts on burn in Legacy: If you want a cheap deck that's decent, then burn is the way to go. All my matches became very grindy, but I always felt I had a
chance to win them. Most of my matches basically started with my opponents saying "Oh, bad matchup!" when they saw what I played. The deck is probably very depent on the metagame, as was mentioned above by wiser people than me. My local metagame seems to be quite well suited for it, combo decks don't seem to be played at all but apart from that it's very varied. The deck might not be Tier 1, because of the metagame dependency, but it's close, maybe Tier 1.5.

I played 4 matches after the tournament against the artifact deck. I won 3 of those, lost only to a Chalice of the Void. We didn't sideboard, so I had a hard time playing around that. He lost all his matches and would have played me in the last match but got a bye because one had dropped before the last round.

Some thoughts on my deck and what to change. I faced Deathrite Shamans, Tarmogoyfs, Dark Confidants, Liliana of the Veil, Abrupt Decay, and various discards in all my matches. Perhaps I could do something against that in the
sideboard, or maindeck? Faerie Macabre felt a bit pointless, Tormod's Crypts would have been more effective perhaps against Goyfs and the Shaman? And Flamebreaks instead of Volcanic Fallouts? I need to study the decklists a bit more as well, I sided badly in some games.

@platypus: S/Bs are always best when tuned to your expected metagame. I can tell you that I like the faerie against things like reanimater and other similar strategies. Crypt is a reasonable card, but I would never side it in vs. goyf or the like. There are also upsides to relic of progenitus. If you're seeing a lot of DRS than I'd consider something like searing blaze, but you need fetches.

As for Flamebreak vs. fallout, it's a fair option, but the "can't be countered" and instant speed of fallout tend to be pretty potent--more important against merfolk though.

You're MD list looks fairly solid though. I would consider some number of figure of destiny over other creatures in a fetchless list.
