You drive badass things.
Thanks, but car insurance is just killer lately.
Must be that new badass tax.
Thanks Obama.
Yep, went up $50 for each vehicle. I will never pay that damn tax and just adjust all my income taxes for no refund. Why should I pay for something the baby boomers voted for, think they deserve, and will only receive? Reminds me of Social Security. I
will never see that money. You can also throw in all those people who thought Obama care was free. The can go to hell or those death panels Palin and Howard Dean spoke about. Enough of my rant, but some damn, Douche Canadian (just him not all) came in the office and tried to teach me how Obama care was better for "us". People are so stupid and this flies an airplane! O_O TAKE COVER!

I just want a new laptop that lets me stream.

This too! Does this need higher specs?

Toshiba was a good suggestion. I've been happy with things ASUS has built as well. Acer tends to be hit or miss. HP and Dell are popular but I like being able to fix hardware issues myself and not have to rely on the company's tech support and replacement policies, so I've never invested in one.

Alright if you guys want me to stream, start suggesting laptops.

To broadcast streams, or just to watch them?
Broadcasting, yes. Significantly.

I like Lenovo's ThinkPad line and most hardware made by ASUS.
I have an ASUS. I love it. It's just not good enough for streaming.

What software?
Actually, I'll just cut out the middle man. I'm just going to Google "[software] system requirements" and copy/pasta them here.

I tried OBS. It hates me.
It literally rubbed it's filthy boots across my keyboard and said, "Fuck yo ASUS, nigga!"

Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) is the setup I use.

I literally know nothing about broadcasting, but it seems like your internet connection speed counts for more than your computer hardware.

Ill be on 8mbps as of next week. Is that good?
Posted: Wed Nov 06, 2013 11:25 pm
by hamfactorial
You're limited by connection speed first, but a slow CPU can really mess with the responsiveness of your computer while you're playing, since it's capturing your screen and encoding a video in real time.
A mostly static screen like MTGO needs about 2-3 Mbps if you play at high resolution (720p).
The higher quality you can stream, the better, since it affects card readability and smoothness of the video.

8mbps upload? Yeah, that's pretty healthy.
EDIT: I shop here.
http://www.newegg.com/ For everything computer related. Not sure if that's helpful to those of you outside the States, but it's about the best place I've found to buy toys and parts for toys.

I know so little about computers, except how to F them up. Have a Toshiba (takes way to long to start up) and would rather have a Samsung or Apple MacBook pro. I only play for gaming on my Xbox 360, thus computer is for internet, word, business, and movies when on trips. I was shopping for one for a long time and went with an ipad. I still use my Toshiba for typing, but the ipad works just fine and is smaller/easier to travel with. Can't play MTGO cause I need to role in that card crack smell on the kitchen table while drinking a litter of Canada Dry.

The tough decisions I face. Next cosplay, Dracule Mihawk, Roronoa Zoro or Trafalgar Law? I do want to do Law at some point this year, so that's an easy pick, but if rather save it for Manifest in August (where it's compulsory cosplay, so more people to have pics with).

All complaints can be filed through a support form located outside my office in the storage room next to stardust's.
So, Stardust has relocated to a storage room? Most appreciated...
With regards to the car discussion, I think I mentioned I bought a car yesterday:

Thirteen years old and it runs better than any car I've ever sat in.
@Z: Get an HP; stay far away from Dell.

Kaze: Excellent decision. It may not be flashy, but it's a solid car that'll treat you right for years to come.
Z: Buy a Mac Pro. It's legitimately going to be better (and maybe even cheaper) than any of the high-end laptops from the brands suggested. I'll PM you, don't want to start a Windows v. Mac flame war (their just different flavors, neither is better).

Remember that the MTGO beta will eventually be the default, and it has a minimum resolution. I can't play on my netbook because the screen is too small.
I dread the day when they force that monstrosity on us

The only monster I want forced on me is redthirst.
I play the MTGO beta every few weeks to see how they're doing, and it keeps getting better. It just has so
terribly far to go to reach basic stability goals that I don't expect much.
The existing client has us all conditioned to expect a differently flavored brand of awful, so I doubt I'd even recognize a good client when it finally does arrive.

Chiming in late on all the toy discussions...
Wheels are 2007 Honda Pilot; SUV room is a must with teenagers, and it rides sweet. However, I'd love to add on something way more economical for the daily grind.
Computers: I build desktops as well, and as many have said, laptops are different animals. MSI and ASUS are both excellent throughout their product lines typically, though you might want to avoid some of the "budget specials". I have the first generation of
ASUS's flagship gaming laptop (this is the newest version pictured, but it is the exact same body with newer innards)...the damned thing is so huge that only a handful of laptop bags will fit it, and it looks like a freakin' stealth bomber. I almost never game anymore, but got it because of truly excellent video quality and the ability to handle video production as both
kids do such projects from time to time.
@zeman - This is the one thing you REALLY need to look at, James--you need a box that is not going to chug when you stream.
Also, I second
newegg.com for all tech purchases...they are rock-stable and their customer service knows how to deal with DOA tech and other such stuff.

Photo- my friend has that same giant ASUS. That thing is fucking huge. He had to break down and buy a notebook computer because it was so cumbersome to carry around to his classes. But man, does it rock for gaming, or what?

Asus makes good machines, the Zenbook was my first choice. I actually bought one and then returned it because the bottom plate had warped, then Apple came out with an Air that had the same specs + better battery life + $200 cheaper + 3-year warranty. Needless to say, I was sold. Still wouldn't hesitate to purchase any of the higher-end ASUS though, they make solid product.
Re: Stealthbomber laptop: Those things go against the entire point of a laptop. If you're going to seriously game, you just have to buy a desktop. You'll never get the same reliability from those things because heat (and the battery) will constantly be a factor.
Get it Tube!
