redthirst:
That sounds like really great EV and the opportunity cost drops a ton when you don't have to spend the whole day with greasy neckbeard casuals whining about favorable matchups.
I remember the first real tournament I played after I got back into Magic, it was after AVR was released and I build a Boros Humans deck. The first guy I played was a local grinder who was playing mono-black with Phyrexian Obliterators, Lashwrithes and a bunch of Doom Blades and Go For the Throats. He crushed me, chuckled to himself and walked off. I suspect he might have stolen my life counter, too, because I couldn't find it after the match. I floundered for a while, hooked up with FoS, built Dos Rakis after RTR came out, then eventually played him in another tournament a few months later. This time, he was on Zombies and opened
with a nice 1-drop into 1-drop 1-drop. I played tight, controlled the board and ground him out for a 2-0 victory. He scooped up his cards and started muttering about how Zombies is the best aggro deck in the format, he's favored against everything and I got lucky "sooooo fucking lucky". Then he started trying to tell me why Pillar of Flame was a terrible maindeck card and I shouldn't be playing it, why Falkenrath Aristocrat is better in a Zombie shell and what is that Knight of Infamy doing in there?
I beat him a few more weeks in a row after that and he stopped coming into my LGS. I haven't seen him since.

Is it strange that that is the exact major i intend to go into? (broadcast journalism)Well done TH, they must have noticed your outstanding corruption reporting.Happy birthday val!
Now as much as I've gotten down on myself the last few days, sometimes things do work out. In the mail today was a letter that told me that i had received a regent's scholarship at Nebraska!

nCheck out the No Agenda podcast, they do a lot of really great analysis to show how the media is compromised and in the pocket of big business / government. Also, it's funny as hell.Is it strange that that is the exact major i intend to go into? Probably because you can sacrifice gravecrawler and Geralf's messenger multiple times plus blood artist shenanigans. I actually agree that zombies was her best shell, but the card was so good that it really didn't matter. (Plus zombies kinda sucked)Falkenrath Aristocrat is better in a Zombie shell
Curious as to his logic there...

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. I have the day off work and my wife scheduled a surprise couple's massage for us today which is awesome. Our last and only massage was at our honeymoon five years ago and it was awesome so I'm looking forward to this one.
Re: Pokemon. I played for awhile when it first came out and crushed everyone with my Chancey energy drain deck. The game seemed pretty linear back then though and I eventually lost interest.

Ah, yeah, I can see that I guess. Rakis was a better shell. Oh, you Verdict? Okay, I'll sac both Ash Zealots and KoI to her. Now she's 7/4 and survives it. Kthnx.Probably because you can sacrifice gravecrawler and Geralf's messenger multiple times plus blood artist shenanigans. I will give the Pokemon competitive scene this, though: IME, they are quite a bit friendlier than the top players at the average M:tG tourney.
That year I went to Regionals, before the first game my opponent was like "I haven't seen you before. How long you been playing?"
I said two weeks.
He said "That's cool. I've been playing for a few years competitively - went to Nationals and Worlds last year - I won't take it easy on you since this is a tournament but if you want I can help you with your deck after the game."
Then I beat his ass like he stole something and he said "Wow... have you seriously only played for 2 weeks? That deck is really good, where did you get it? Have you considered cards _______?"
By about
round 6 word had gotten around and every opponent I went up against asked me "Hey, are you that guy?" and after the game, most of them wanted to know if I was on any forums or if I wanted to exchange emails or if I'd be interested in playtesting - which has never happened to anyone I know at a Magic tournament - most of the time there the opponent just wants to tell me all about how they should have won because their deck is better and/or they're a better player.
Also, sad as this sounds, Pokemon tournaments smell better and there are significantly more females - a relevant number of which are 20-something and do-able.

One of us is from Bizzaro world then, because my exposure to Pokemon, albeit limited, is the exact opposite. Maybe I just haven't seen a competitive group, but the ones that play on the other side of the store from us on Monday are kids, ages 6-
14, and a handful of overweight, 50+ year old men who are yelling at them. And it smells worse than even the stankest gaming convention I've ever been to.

That's the problem, you play the same way every game and - aside from attacking - you and your opponent hardly ever interact. In addition, you only have to make decisions on your turn because there's no Instant speed effects... after a while, every single game feels like goldfishing with a spectator.Re: Pokemon. Building decks is fun (which is why I'm willing to help out there), and the tournament enviroment is great, but actually playing the game is absolutely mind-numbing after a short while.

I mean, there were some weirdos, sure, but the tournaments are split into 3 groups that don't play each other:![]()

1. Little kids (something like 6-10)
2. Young'uns (11-17)
3. Adults (18+)
So my only experience is with the Adults and most of
them are either:
1. Genuine hard-core Pokefans - yes, you will see a 40 year old dude dressed as Ash Ketchum
2. Competitive gamers that chose Pokemon TCG for one reason or another as their game of choice
3. Parents that play to spend time with their kids
Most of the really awkward weirdos (like the group that thinks they're vampires) and the worst funk stayed in the 11-17 y/o area.

Must be that Mondays are when the first two groups, and rejects from the third group get together.I mean, there were some weirdos, sure, but the tournaments are split into 3![]()

Though around here it's Magic and Yugioh, and getting into Yugioh isn't any cheaper or more laid back.

Rotation happens every year after Worlds, but the number of sets rotating out is pretty arbitrary and the year I played that number was 0.

Unzip and tell her "Whosoever holds this hammer, if she be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor."

Open the door, Mr. Lawless, it's the value police.
He wanted $18 for those fucking Ravagers! Modern Masters set, never played... I got him down to $12. They ain't stolen, it was self-defense!
He was also trying to start the Blood Barons at $10 store credit a piece. Fucking miser.
