The meta is very well adapted to Patrick Ratigan.

My first round Modern 8-man opponent is on Affinity, gets Kiki-Resto comboed out, salts it up in chat with "what a pile".
(not saying he's wrong)
He rage quits the second game when I wipe his board T2. I check him out on mtgo-stats, he has dozens of 3-1 and 4-0 Splinter Twin daily wins since 2013.

Modern can get rather tiling even for the best of us esp. when your playing something which can be hated out (I've pretty much rage quit the format until I get out of the red).

Yup, my rating and bankroll took a beating when I switched to playing Modern. I imagine it will do the same if/when I attempt Legacy.

Believe it or not, Legacy has fewer viable ways to truly lock someone out of the game (unless you are playing Dredge, that is) than Modern. Decks attack from so many angles that your sideboard cards are rarely just "oops, you lose".

by BlakLanner
Not saying that your learning curve won't be a bit steep. So many interactions that non-Legacy players never have to worry about.
Posted: Fri Mar 28, 2014 3:32 pm
by hamfactorial
Yeah, I have no experience with Legacy so I just assume that the older the format the more broken/oppressive.

Legacy sucks

The things done are generally far more powerful than in the other formats. The defense is that we are trying to do the similar powerful things and our defenses are stronger since we have things like free counterspells and stronger, if more focused, hate cards. Attacks come from so many angles that, unless you are positive that a certain deck will show in force, we play more general answers that work against multiple decks. The only exception are cards to stop decks that just flatten us if they go off. Then we play the specific hate cards that make them cry.
Legacy is not for everyone. Many people can't accept a format where they can die before they take their first turn. Then again, I would like to think that our little group here is tough enough to handle the format with a little training.

Stoneforge Mystic is too good, Brainstorm and Wasteland aren't fun.

It is my favorite format, if only because I get to play with everything and get to see all sorts of cool stuff happen.

lozlzlzlz, wait until you see the screenshot of the match I'm in. I have 2 Auriok Champions on the field and he's going for the Kiki-Jiki + Zealous Conscripts combo. He went for the Kiki + Restoration Angel combo last turn before realizing that I was gaining 4 for every Angel he made and stopped with me at ~70 life.
I gain 2 life for every copy he puts on the battlefield, so he has to make ~70 copies to kill me.

In the finals of the draft I won yesterday, my opponent is at 2 life and I have a 2/2 flyer and a 2/1 to his one dude. He drops the blue archetype and I rip a stratus walk, put it on his archetype and swing ftw. It was quite an interaction

Sweet
Have you read Frank Karsten's Limited articles for Theros? Great stuff, lots of subtle interactions mentioned at the bottom of each article.

I have not. Where are they posted? I've actually come to like stratus walk a lot more for that very reason. Playing it on your opponent's creature is actually not a terrible plan since you still get to draw a card and it can get your fatties through in certain situations. This situation made me laugh tho since he was basically dead on the board with any single card in his colors due to a simple stratus walk. The fact that it was the blue archetype is just gravy

Not as skill-intensive as the Drownyard mirror though

I became the master of winning the UWR versus Drownyard Esper match purely by burning them out with Searing Spear, Helix, Snapcaster, Resto and maybe a punch with Aurelia. Fuck that.
I hate Drownyard and I hate Zem for liking it. Control decks should end the game with giant, awesome creatures. Grave/Sun/Frost Titan, Aetherling, Consecrated Sphinx, Simic Sky Swallower, Wurmcoil Engine, Iona, Elesh Norn, Aurelia, even Windreaver in my heyday.
They must be hardcast and must be a 1-2 of in your deck.
Planeswalker ultimates are also acceptable.
