My housemate is watching me play and wants to know how Delver of Secrets is a legal card. I don't have a real answer.

What rules of thumb do you guys use for building manabases? I.e., hitting your mana for 1-drops, 2-drops, double-colored 2-drops, etc. mathematically we need 16/15/13/12 for single mana on turns 1-4 on the play and ./20/19/17 for double mana requirements, but this is for 90% chances which is likely too conservative. What's acceptable in your experience?

15 turn 1 sources for my primary; 13 for a turn 2 splash colour; 12 for turn 3 splash etc.
18 primary sources for CC on 2; preferably 20.

I am honestly surprised that talk of banning delver in pauper hasn't come up. He's in nearly everything blue, the only reason I'm not running it in aggro faeries is because the deck only has 8 instants main deck (faerie trickery and peppersmoke). And and turn 1 delver turn 2 flip makes the control deck into aggro nearly instantly. Even wild nacatle is harder to use, and she requires a lot more work, where as delver requires instants and deck manipulation, which blue would be running a lot of even with out it. Now I am not for banning it, as several archetypes can still rip up the thpe of deck it usually goes in. Burn gives zero shits (though they might board out flame rift just to be safe), affinity still eats it alive, and infect can still pull the nuts against almost everything. I think even cloudshift has a reasonable shot.

thanks to nbw for the sig.
You do need to try to gay it up a little more.

Having faced down turn 1 delver with burn several times I can say with some authority that I really don't care, over half the deck deals with it, and searing blaze (normally a little dead against most monoblue decks) needs a creature to burn face and dropping delver offers a fine target, I am already likely to board in REB against it anyway, and depending on my opening grip I can often ignore the damn thing entirely. Honestly ignoring things is often the key to victory for burn. Delver is a 7 turn clock, and that is not a hard clock to race, especially since the only thing a non-kiln fiend version is going to put in the redzone is keldomBurn and Infect absolutely care about turn 1 Delver; they're a huge dog to turn 1 Delver.
marauders (and maybe furnace scamp).
Against infect you really can't use delver offensively, and if you block with him he dies to giant growth, and if they already landed a rancor you are still taking the brunt. Delver is a bit more annoying for infect burn has the block has still stolen tempo (a lot of it if they didn't have trample), and with aposle's blessing on top of rancor you can get around it pretty easy. And if you are building around delver there is the issue of not having a lot of creatures to clog up the ground with. With all that being said it is a rougher match up for them compared to burn.

I'll concede infect, but lay your wisdom on me regarding the burn match-up, regardless of how vicious your criticism is, because I play burn a lot. Trust me, I am very hard to offend.

Urgh, I'm starting to go a bit stir crazy. I rely on fnm and the occasional tournament like an iq to get me out the house and keep me entertained...
I'm thinking I might go to a small sunday afternoon magic tournament just to get out the house and to play some...
Even considering driving to an iq this sunday that's over 2 hours away, just because I'm jonesing e.e

I think I should maybe put together a stompy pauper deck, the archetype seems common but underdeveloped and I can't imagine it would be too hard for it to be decent given the massive pool available. I tried a while back, but it ended up being a pile of mana elves to hit the desired low mana count and then morphed into an elf deck, and it just sucked.

Wizard doesn't sanction Pauper IRL, so even if you find a store which offers it you won't be getting points.Pauper has never been a format I've really looked into.
Is it really that entertaining? Also, I know that Z has become death incarnate in that format with a control deck. Is aggro even an option in the meta?
That said the best Aggro deck on Pauper right now is Affinity, you can play Goblins, Sliver or Stompy but you'll just lose to MBC.

Played in a random SCG IQ today, got top 8 playing RW devotion(no muta's).
Since it's worth 4 points and 15 qualifies you for the open, I might grind SCG events this year. The invitational is incredibly high EV from what all the grinders told me and I was beating people much better then myself easily today.

You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.
Beatdown is hard, though.

Aggro outside of affinity is sketchy at best, stompy has a lot of bad matchups, hexproof either has to run sube par cards or risk losing to it's mana base, infect is really swingy, ninja faeries is no where near as good as people seem to think, and there just isn't a RDW list that I have been able to discern.Pauper has never been a format I've really looked into.
Is it really that entertaining? Also, I know that Z has become death incarnate in that format with a control deck. Is aggro even an option in the meta?
I have a ninja-less variant of faeries that I run, but I warn you that it's still not there yet, on the bright side it is better than ninja faeries.
Infect as stated is way swingy, but when it's going right its nigh unstoppable. Turn 2 wins are way doable, but don't push for them too hard.
Turbofog is actually a fairly decent deck. Most fogs are commons, so add some card draw and [card]jace's erasure[/card] and enjoy. Comes in simic, azorious, and bant flavors, it just depends on what fogs you want, and how contorted a manabase you are willing to run.
MBC is also pretty good (even better in paper where it has hymn to tourach which hasn't been printed at common on mtgo). You have few bat match-ups (MUC {particularly the creaturelss variety}, and burn). It comes in two main flavors, rats and lots of rats. It generally features a bunch of discard and killspells, including the best mass removal in the format crypt rats. Also it is very hard for anything aggressive to close the deal thanks to corrupt, tendrils of corruption, and gary the traveling salesman. Do note that while the deck features a lot of rats, it's
just a coincidence, there is no real tribal synergy, it's just that the effects it wants are frequently tied to rodents (or zombie cats).
Boros Kitty is fun, it seems a bit gimmicky at first but it works. There are a bunch of articles on it and a thread in the pauper section here.
MUC is probably the best archetype in the format over all, but it's a bit tough to play if you haven't played a lot of MUC style decks in the past. Splashing black for removal is an option. Either way Z can tell you a lot more about it than I can.
Burn is my favorite deck in the format, and comes in two major flavors: straight-up and kiln fiend, and there is the cousin deck kilnclops that's pretty decent too, splashing blue for nivix cyclops and some card draw/deck manipulation. Personally I run, perhaps ironically, the straight-up version, which is a ton of fun, easy to learn a bit tough to master sequencing completely, but I warn you that it can be a bit expensive as you will probably want [card]chain
lightning[/card]s for it and those are not cheap (and both fireblast and flame rift are pretty high for commons). The advantage is that it is very hard to beat because it is fairly uninteractive, but there areways, most notably lifegain, and unlike standard, modern, and legacy there is no good answer to lifegain other than "try and outrun it". It can run fairly roughshod over most of the really good decks in the format, but is often very vulnerable to otherwise crappy decks (like cloudshift). Occasionally has some problems sealing the deal against MBC if they hit a corrupt or tendrils on curve and you are slow.
Finally there's cloudshift, which I am not 100% sure how to classify, but it's basically a bunch of blink effects and etb creatures. It's amusing, but way gimmicky. It can gain a fair amounts of life, and the number of cards it can draw off mulldrifter are insane, but it's very beatable by most decks if you plan and practice the match up.

thanks to nbw for the sig.

I hate not being able to play in daily events because I face suboptimal lists in 8 mans that lucksack and crush me. My mono black opponent casually drew Whip of Erebos in all three of our games and multiple Garys and Pack Rats in games one and three. Quite frustrating.
