And tournament's over, I won!

Huge thanks to all y'all for your advice and thoughts not just after the past two days where I was off, but since I joined and have been trying to get better.

The tournament was at the level of an iq/ptq for player skill, as it had pretty much every big tourney player in atlanta, and most of the people who travel around the area to all the big events, so this means a huge deal to me in terms of confidence...

Seriously, thank you all so much. I have felt like my play has improved quite a bit since I joined. I mean, last standard I had 2x Vexing Devil in my deck...
You are all awesome, and I wish to give you hugs. HUGS!
Awesome! Good job!

Fyi Brian May's guitar sounds the way it does because he built his own treble-booster that was either in the guitar or attached to his amp.

The warmth of tube amps on recordings comes from the tape it was recorded on, not the tube amp. See digital recordings of tube amps. It has similar warmth live, but it's a popular misconception that old bands live sounds = recorded sounds, and because of the technology that is simply not the case. Most of the popular recordings of the classics are also massively retouched, because the quality of the originals was shite compared to your typical mp3.

Tl;dr: Live amp sound has very little to do with recorded amp sound.
Brian May's aound: Until recently the only way to really duplicate his sound was to plug
an overdrive, like a Tubescreamer, into an AC30. Preferably an entire wall of them, which is what he play through live.

Sounds in general: yes, live amp sounds are different than recorded sounds. I don't think that was ever the point. The point was analog vs digital, and analog gear fetches a higher price on the market due to age, desirability, and availability.

But on to older recordings, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've listened to my dad's original Black Sabbath records. Yes, records. Perfect the way it was. The reason is that it sound live was because it pretty much was : they set up live in the studio, punched record (basically) on some analog gear, and played.

What's the point going to mcdonalds if it's going to be slow? I have received my food faster at denny's, and it was much better food than mcdonalds. The way I see it is that I am trading time off my life to get my food a little faster when I eat at mcdonalds and now their killing me and making me wait.

Only when I'm being surly. I'm here because it matters to her, so I guess there's no place I'd rather be. Strict upgrade over my family anyway.
Feels weird, huh? Can't stand my family but my in-laws are great.

Been busy this week with holiday stuff - I hope all you fine FoSers had a great holiday and have fun plans lined up for New Year's.

Raida: Good work!!!!

Khaos: My point was that the recording medium adds a lot to the "sound" of guitarists on old albums- not the fact that the amps were analog. Totes agree that tubes are better all around, just a fun fact about old recordings.

Got one step weirder. My ex-fiancé's family is still great, and I spend a good chunk of time around the holidays with them even though the engagement broke off years ago.

Congrats Raida. I similarly won a tourney today. 1k/GPT/TCG Platinum event. I got some benjamins, 2 buys to the Sacramento GP, a bitchin plaque, and an invite to a sweet tourney.

Very nice .

For any MODO player who cares, MOCS2 will be alt art Tropical Island the format hasn't been decided yet (its most likely going be another sham mocs aka Cube Queues) but since its a really awesome land card I don't even mind :grovel: so on Jan 4th (when grinding starts) I highly recommend grinding 60 QP before Jan 29th
so you get 4 shots at the queues to farm a play set of Tropical Island (if were lucky we'll only need 30 QP and we'll get a real mocs again but I doubt it).

I forgot to mention the Championship Qualifiers are on from January 8, 12:00 AM PST, through January 14, running every 3 hours (format standard). I hope to see you guys playing in the Championship with me  (yeah, I'm bold enough to state that I'll win at least one of these darn events).

Ladies and gentlemen, Mutavault is now $30 in paper.

Selling these off for a set of Arid Mesa sure is enticing...

Kaze and Khaos: y'all need to just fuck already.

Aren't the fetches all $50 now?

Damn... I'd definitely ditch my mutas if I didn't need them for a tourney in January at my LGS where the prize is a FTV20 (four rounds of standard, cut to top 8 where we play out out in an MMA draft)

Posted: Sun Dec 29, 2013 5:11 pm
by Valdarith
I'm wondering if the price will go down when the new set is introduced. It could push the meta toward more two color strategies which would reduce the number of Mutavaults being played (full set down to 2) or maybe none at all for decks like GW with such an even split on colors. Using them to invest in Modern staples is a good move in my opinion. I'm using two of my four in my current deck in paper but I'd be more than happy to give them all up for Arid Mesas even though I rarely play Modern.

I've got a play set of arid mesa and scalding tarn, one marsh flats, and need just two more copies of misty for a play set. Though, I'm pretty close to tempo twin, just need cryptics, kiki jiki, splinter twin, and some random commons...

After taking pictures of all my 40k army and doing some research I realized I had over $700 in stuff. Sent a message to my LGS owner with pics and details and he's going to get the word out.

And now I'm having those sad nostalgic feels.

man I feel you Vala.

I felt that way when selling some of my magic cards to make rent one month

It was like... "well I MIGHT use this in a deck SOMEDAY...." and I ended up not selling a bunch of cards (like boros reckoners when they were back at $20 or w/e"

My uncle hit a deer. Lost his eye. Somehow maintained control of the vehicle regardless.

youre gonna need to explain the mechanics of this one to me

did the windshield shatter or somethin?

Posted: Sun Dec 29, 2013 10:47 pm
by Kazekirimaru
I guess. Apparently a car going the other way hit the deer first, knocked the deer into his windshield, and according to my cousin in the back seat: "It's like the deer went through and just exploded on impact." Fucking exploding deer.

He's in Indy right now post-op. He lost one eye and can barely see out the other.

He's trying to get discharged early to get a cheaper hospital bill.

Your uncle sounds like a badass. Exploding deer takes his eye and he doesn't even lose control of the car. Then wants to leave the hospital asap.

He ain't got time to bleed.

and he still kept control with zero eyes
