I was conscripted to go to the auto parts store to get antifreeze and motor oil. Unfortunately most of the stores in town are closed due to weather so I had to drive a ways. Finally found some. Came back. Told I need to get an antifreeze tester. Leave again, almost get T-boned in an intersection by a car sliding through, returned home. Other van won't start. Spend thirty minutes trying to jump it. Doesn't work. Burn out starter. Eventually have to push it. Gets stuck in snow. Have to dig it out with shovels. Finally get it situated but still dead. No thanks were given.
Then at the end father gets drunk and lets slip some crazy things that I never would have wanted to know about my family before I was born and would have been perfectly fine never knowing. Currently pondering if I'm adopted. Like, literally. Going insane. World doesn't make sense. I don't even.
Thanks Obama.

Nihilist, I finally got around to posting in the Mono B Control thread if you're interested.
I'll check it out in a couple of hours!
Ok, ok, ok.
Since I don't see Yarpus saying anything, I feel like I have to propose a sub-optimal card.
Could Pilfered Plans be in place of Divination?
You're not EVER going to mill them out, of course, but you could mess with their scrying.
I'm finding that early on that coloured requirements are kinda desperate; so I might only have 1 black mana and need divination into removal for
example. The upside would be nice (also randomly hit an Aetherling or something) but it increases inconsistency in a way that makes me wary. I can see less risk averse players finding it to be good though.
I can understand that.

I always liked Piltfered Plans.
What's the general opinion about Kiora? I kinda love -1 (s)Explore, but not sure if UG combination can hold her up unless they plan to reprint Swagtusk (and that would be a crime).

I think kiora targetting herself with her +1 until she ultimates is probably the best path for her. Who wants some calamari?

She can't target herself. Her +1 can only target permanents controlled by your opponent.

Never mind she's worse than I thought. So how about the refrain for every weird cool bad card, probably fun in commander. Maybe in a casual deck with some proliferation? Casual RUG Kiora could be fun. I have no competitive use for this card, i'll let some one else figure this card out and cackle like a madman when I lightning strike it.

I actually think she is very good. Explore is a very powerful effect; especially in a deck like Bant Control.

She dies to a strong breeze. Can't see it seeing play as long as Jace is in standard.

Turn 2 acceleration
Turn 3 Kiora, bubble your attacker
Turn 4 explore + wrath
Turn 5 explore
Turn 5 explore GG

That's what you're looking for; if it isn't possible she won't be good enough right now for standard. Quite possible for BUG in Modern though.

What I'm saying is that if they have more than one creature, or a burn spell or anything really, she dies. Her loyalty is too low, and Jace is just much better.

I know I'm testing on Cockatrice because I'm poor, but Jesus Christ. If you can't do basic math (ex: 20-3=? or 17-6=?) maybe don't play magic.

Well, I still miss playing with Explore.
I had this deck. After I've sold UW Control had some craps left and created one of the most ridicolous and hated decks in my LGS - UG WallRamp.
Full sets of Overgrown Battlement and Walls of Tanglecords. Explores and Harrows. Counterspells and bounce. And draw. 2 Jin-Gitaxias, 4 Consecrated Sphinxes. And Emrakul to not mill myself.
People still tell the legends about amount of cards I've drawn while playing this deck. There was one smart motherfucker who played JtMS against me and he DARED to use Brainstorm. When I had 3 Sphinxes on the field. I was like bitch, drawing 18. EoT Gitaxias. Untap, bounce everything - discard everything, filthy whore.
While the deck was made for funsies, I really admired Explore as a card. That's why I'm excited for Kiora even if she's fragile as hell.

Let's face the truth: I know that Wizard sometimes messes up, but I'm pretty positive they're testing their cards.
The very fact that Kiora's got a CMC of 4 but enters the battlefield with just 2 counters makes me think that letting her enter with 3 made her too strong.
Bant control could be a thing, but I'm not sold on its effectiveness against other control decks.
Lets see what the other spoilers give us.

If she entered with 4, and the explore was -2 / ultimate was -7 I could see it being good. As it is, it just dies.

She looks kinda bad in a vacuum, so we don't know what else will be around her. It's odd that she starts out with 2 loyalty.

she has a natural ally in sylvan caryatid, but unfortunately caryatid does not pair with supreme verdict
ug is so bad almost always, and bant control has basically nothing going for it nowadays
i like her, but i duno. that two loyalty.

Definitely more attractive in modern, but she might not even be good there. It is the format with Bolt after all.

Complete noob question incoming.
My opponent has a
Young Pyromancer.
I have an
Ash Zealot.
I swing. He cast
shock.
I respond with
Magma Jet, targeting
Young Pyromancer.
Does he get the Elemental token, even though YP$ is dead before
shock resolves?

Complete noob question #2: why not?
I'd expect this:
Ashley attacks.
Shock gets casted -> Young Pyromancer's ability goes on the stack.
Magma Jet removes Pyromancer.
Ability resolves, an elemental enters the battlefield.
Maybe I'm getting it all wrong.

Thanks, that's what I thought, but the guy argued so ardently I was second guessing myself.
I believe he does.
He casts shocks, YP$ Token now goes on the stack.
He responds with magma jet on YP$, putting magma jet on top of the stack.
The stack resolves... MJ deals dmg to YP$ and scry 2 after resolve, now the token is next on the stack and comes into play.
The fact YP$ says "whenever" and not "YP$ may put"

Yes, he gets the token. The YP$ trigger goes on the stack and will resolve after the Magma Jet kills YP$. YP$ no longer being on the battlefield doesn't affect the ability resolving.

Kiora is currently terribad in modern.
I say "currently" because there is no home for her yet. Dying to bolt is a minor consequence imo as she has already gained value, but is that value worth tapping out for? Depends on whether someone can brew a good enough deck to take full advantage of it and keep her around.

Ok, at least I wasn't the only one who was unsure. IRL I would have called a jugde. Guy was being a bitch and it didn't effect the outcome of the game, so whatever.
@ RT: Learn to play?
@ group: Another slightly odd question. Can a player Rapid Hybridization their own Thrassa to just get a flash 3/3?

I will be attending the Dothan, AL PTQ. That is, as long as my wife doesn't go into labor early. Her due date is March 16!
Red - unfortunately no. I'm trying to hang around locally with my wife being closer to term and having a history of preterm labor. I'd hate to be three hours away when the moment comes!

JS - yes. You can target any creature with Hybridization regardless of whether or not it is indestructible. Thassa stays on the field and they get a 3/3.

Also Red, SCG ATL is March 1, so there's a conflict there anyway. Would love to win the PTQ though with the pro tour being in ATL.
