Cap is a horribly one dimensional character. Only Superman beats him for most bland and un-watchable.
The Ultimate Marvel version of Cap was very well done. They explored the issues he had adjusting to modern society. Trying to impose his morals on others. He definitely had control issues and a temper to match. In the regular Marvel universe, when Civil War happened, he vociferously objected to The Initiative, eventually rebelling against the very government he swore to defend. Not trying to change your mind. Just explaining why I like Cap.

meh. Obviously have not read any of the comics showcasing their character and going off what the general media and geek culture dictate works.

Fundamental flaw in understanding superheroes today is that they aren't meant to be real. Stemming back to the introduction of Superman superheroes have always been an escape from reality and have been more or less morality tales for modern man. Superman is a Sun God. Batman the Night God. etc. It was not until Marvel started making their characters "flawed" that people began to crave realistic superheroes. Then the 80s hit and Alan Moore deconstructed the Superhero in Watchmen and
Frank Miller came out with the Dark Knight Returns which has now ushered in the weird conundrum that is modern comics. 90s was a bit of a blur but was mainly focused on ultra violence, tits, guns, jackets, leg pouches and big muscles.

Superman is bland or no longer works for most people because currently no one has actually went back to why he actually works. In reality he is probably one of the characters that minorities or children from immigrants can relate to. Immigrant from another world, raised from nothing and using his gifts and abilities to make a better, safer world around him.

Batman on the other hand is not relatable but is a bad ass. Don't think any of us were born ultra billionaires that were orphaned early and used your riches to be a bad ass. Again though he taps into the idea of the living the rich man's fantasy.

Captain America falls into the same trap as Superman but is even more scrutinized because of his symbolic patriotism. The character is fairly liberal even though
most conservatives and even foreigners believe he stands for 'Murica. Character comes from nothing, dreams of being a bigger, better man, enlists in the military to serve his country and is given that shot. Then the most tragic thing happens and he becomes a man lost in time. The ideas he upholds are warped in a country he no longer recognizes. While during WW2 he symbolized freedom against oppression and Nazis when he returned he ended up becoming a symbol of american ideals (truth, justice, liberty, freedom) but not a symbol for America. Plays into the fact that he was on the losing side of Civil War. The dude said "fuck yo oppression tony stark!" Then was shot and killed.

Being super
judgmental, imposing made up moral standards on others and throwing tantrums when they don't accept isn't interesting.

Yeah, those were just a few examples of his imperfections. The character also has a lot of positive qualities.

I was never a Cap fan until his movie. I just always found him to be somewhere one dimensional, with problems I couldn't relate to.

Captain America is awesome, both character and movies

The character concept is shitty, but so is almost every comic book character, they're working with what they've got and can't stray too far because of fanboys

Considering he's been around since the 40's, I'd say they've done something right.

Also, from what I've been reading, the new movie is really good. People are saying it's the best Marvel movie yet. Dunno if I can believe that, but it's enough to convince me to go see it soon.

I guess I just think that comic books are dumb. If I want to read, I'll read a novel. If I want something visual, I'll watch a movie. I don't need a shitty version of both of those things smashed together.

I never got into comic books as a kid, because there wasn't a comic book store in my town (though there were many card shops where I could buy Magic boosters) and Internet mail orders weren't a thing yet. I read The Watchmen a few years ago and loved it, but I'm not sure that's the same thing.

I've never read a comic, except when I forced myself a couple times when younger to see what the fuss was about, tried to pretend I liked it, never bought one and have never thought about them since.

Loved comics in middle school, but it got to a point where I was spending my whole allowance on less than an hour's worth of entertainment, so I switched to books to get more bang for my buck and haven't looked back.

Conveniently enough, the extra $20 or so a week I was able to save allowed me to start playing the card game that I'd always found interesting at the Comic store.

I think that by being turned off from comics by the big two(Marvel & DC), you guys may be missing awesome stories. Also the form of sequential art isn't to be in place of reading a novelization or in place of watching a movie, its its own creature. Because they exist in both text and visualization but in a time-stop format, the amount of what you can do is amazing. The depth which you can explore and flesh out worlds is almost unparalleled because you are not bound by time or the need to find the correct word sequencing to rebuild your vision of the world in the reader's mind's eye. I could go on for many pages on how the 90s(LLLLLLIIIIIIIFELD!!!) really fucked with the perception of comics and how only now are people beginning to see it for what it actually is. A lot of the character versions that people see are a singular author's version, or a particular side of character that the series is focused on. When you tell
people that the X-Men actually have a black ops wet works team, they usually don't believe you. Then show them the story where the group struggles with their mission to assassinate Apocalypse as a child.

Deadpool: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Marvel)
Marvel's MAX line
Sex Criminals (Image)
From Hell (Indie - Top Shelf) - turned into movie
Surrogates (Indie - Top Shelf) - turned into movie
Justice (DC)
Batman - Court of Owls (DC)
Batman - Death in the Family (DC)
Watchmen (Indie)
Wanted (Top Cow) - turned into movie

Some of my recommendations and a few have been turned into movies that had to leave a lot of the good stuff behind to fit into a timelocked format.

I also have a Marvel Unlimited account I can share for anyone interested in reading, kinda like Netflix for comics, Marvel backlog and newer issues on 6month delay. I have a pull list of $20 a week and my UseNet account pulls down about another $70 a week in pirate digital copies.

@RT you should prolly read Sex Criminals, I think you'd wildly enjoy it. Series is about people who have the ability to freeze time for everyone but themselves when they orgasm, and the repercussions of what they can get up to.

I love everything Deadpool. I think it's hilarious that he constantly breaks the 4th wall. Only Marvel character that I know of that does this.

The Watchmen graphic novel is great. The art isn't exactly spectacular, but that story line... damn. The movie was equally great. It strayed only slightly from the book, but was done very well.

The Wanted movie
was a crime against nature. Didn't follow the book in the slightest. The book was fantastic and would have been amazing on the big screen.

Dax, I'm definitely interested in reading some Marvel digital comics. I used to have a subscription, but let it expire. If you're willing to share, I'm in.
