Mardu list:

[deck]

4 Soldier of the Pantheon
4 Foundry Street Denizen
4 Borderland Marauder
3 Generator Servant
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
3 Brimaz, King of Oreskos
1 Iroas, God of Victory

Spells
3 Sorin, Solemn Visitor
3 Mardu Ascendancy
2 Spear of Heliod
4 Stoke the Flames
2 Mardu Charm

Lands
4 Mana Confluence
2 Bloodstained Mire
3 Temple of Malice
1 Temple of Triumph
4 Battlefield Forge
3 Caves of Koilos
1 Swamp
2 Mountain
3 Plains
[/deck]

Turn 1 Denizen > Turn 2 Servant (swing for two) > Turn 3 Sack for Border and Rabble, potentially swing for 12.

I think Iroas becomes ridiculously good here and I might add an extra one.
I like the direction of this deck, but it needs some work.

Things I like:
nSoldier of the Pantheon (this guys value should go way up.)
Rabble + Brimaz + Iroas

Things I dislike:
Your Manabase
Your Manacurve
Foundry Street (Red creatures only)
Borderland
Genny

Here's what I think would help:

[deck] Mardu Tokens[/deck]

Akroan Hoplite + Rabblemaster mean you'll attack for huge chunks along with your little guys. Tymaret gives you a bunch of reach late game. Launch the fleet just seems awesome in this kind of deck.

not sure about 4 mire with only 2 lands in the list they can get. You'll often find yourself naturally drawing 2 Mire and one of either the mountain or swamp, rendering Mires 2+ useless. Either up the fetchable lands by 1 or more or consider including some number of Urborg so they're no longer dead if you're out of targets. Urborg also lets your painlands and confluences tap for B without hurting.

Deflecting Palm is interesting with so many big creatures being pushed in the set.

I like Murderous Cut and Adamant Negation for Modern. Cut might help Grixis Delver be a thing and Negation seems good with Tarmogoyf.

I literally put that Mardu list together without thinking much about it. I forgot about Hoplite. That card could be crazy.

Foundry isn't ideal with Brimaz and his cats, but it has value with Rabble and Ascendency.

And the more I think about it, the more I like Iroas in Mardu.

Have you considered using Purphoros? It'd turn all the token makers into free burn spells.

I think Iroas has more value in Mardu.

I just saw Temur Charm. I was not expecting Mana Leak for Temur Monsters.

Agreed. I expected it on the Jeskai one at most. It really makes me wonder what they are going to get.

Jeskai probably has a counter that can't be countered (counterflux)

Posted: Mon Sep 08, 2014 7:35 pm
by Valdarith
Some sort of counter, some sort of damage, and an indestructible or double strike effect.

If no counter, maybe a lifelink mode.

Maybe Jeskai aggro should be looked into as an option. With Ephara it can be pretty good.

Just when I think we're rid of Azorious Charm... two more years?!

Mantis Rider also seems playable.

one and a half years. Khans block will rotate with the Spring set in 2016 that starts a new 2-set block. Khans being the last 3-set block, it loses 6 months in Standard.

For sure. Lightning Angel minus a toughness for -1 mana? Seems good.

Jeskai is looking pretty tempo-ish.

I am very much looking forward to a Jeskai tempo deck the likes of which we had back in Rav/TSP era.

Jeskai Charm seems very powerful. I can't think of any deck that wants it yet, but objectively, it's the strongest of the set. It has one mode relevant 90% of the time (only irrelevant if they have zero creatures, in which case you're very far ahead), and two others that are exactly what you want to be doing in the other 10% of situations.

Interesting, I think Temur and Mardu are the best charms and Jeskai is the worst(worst=/=bad).

Jeskai charm does get a lot better if the wedge is very tempo oriented of course, a la Larsons Lucky Charm deck from the PT Gatecrash finals.

I keep thinking about the Jeskai Charm and its comparison to Azo and Boros Charm and all I can really conclude is that there is a big difference between 3 mana and 2 mana. Not to mention, it's 3 mana of different colors.

The color thing also makes the bounce on jeskai charm a LOT better since mana being worse makes decks come out much slower. In that aspect, it's basically a removal spell vs. midrange decks.

Don't compare these cards to RTR ones; you'll pretty much always come out disappointed.

I'm not...anything. I'm just mulling stuff over as social media (and you guys) blows up about the card. It's a strong card, no doubt about it, but most reactions I've come across are either "HOLY SHIT, 2 YEARS OF AZO CHARM WAS ENOUGH!" or "Omg, they
fused 2 different charms." You almost can't really compare them because, like I said, 3 mana and 2 mana is a big difference.

I will say this: I absolutely love the art to Jeskai Charm. I will most certainly be finding one in foil.

I just really strongly dislike that effect and would prefer if it was only available at 4cc sorcery so it wouldn't be constructed viable lol.

Saying they fused charms is a comment on lazy design, it doesn't mean the card is very powerful

Azorius Charm cycled, nothing will ever replace that, and that DEFINITELY includes a 3 mana Griptide with Boros Charm tacked on

How does Whip of Erebos's second ability interact with gods?

I assume you can whip a god that's in your graveyard. I also assume it's still exiled regardless of your devotion on the end step?

The Charms are all good, but Mardu has got to be the best of them without seeing if UWR tempo is actually a thing

@Tbuzzsaw

Is it ok with you if I write an article on the deck we've been discussing?

Wescoe (http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=12037) and Van Lunen (http://www.channelfireball.com/articles ... mardu-way/) seem to have similar ideas.

Sweet. I was pretty close on the charm!

What's nice here is that the Griptide part doesn't require a creature to be attacking or blocking. Really nice to tuck a fatty in response to a fetch activation. I'm liking Jeskai more and more. Hope I can play a tempo deck. Or maybe Jeskai burn could be a thing?
