I can't think of anything more needless than lore for a card game.

Heaven forbid that people want to read stories about the characters they see named in the cards. Is it needed? No. Do some people enjoy it? Yes. Does it sell well? Yes. Therefore they will keep doing it.

How very neckbeard-y of you.

It would be like playing an RPG without any character development. Who would buy that?

I was always a big fan of the Weatherlight Saga, but quit really following M:tG's story lines after Apocalypse.

Lore is awesome. When I was but a young scrump, I was heavy into Star Wars CCG and one of the things that made the game so great was the lore around the aliens, lesser known characters, vehicles, and the weapons. Decipher executed it very well. It took Magic awhile to catch on to that. You'll notice that the Tempest block was not only a turning point in block structure, but also storyline. As a result, sales increased, newer players joined the game, and it was a time period that is fondly remembered. It set the stage for pretty much the next 15 years of the game. Has the lore and storyline around all the blocks been good? Not all of them. But almost everyone seems to have a favorite.

I will say this: I do not like Theros block, but I love the flavor, lore, and storyline.

@Alex - INN was fucking sweet.

Rather, whose going to pick up counterstrike for its heartbreaking tale of the terrorist who left his faimily to make some money to support them.

Magic really does need some type of cartoon or show adaptation for it's story to REALLY make sense to people who aren't heavily into it, though. I'll concede that. They could (and should) do more.
