Why? Draft is supposed to be the entry point into the game. Don't have any cards? Draft and learn and collect. Just because man-children can't deal with someone learning doesn't mean it's wrong. The idea of doing a draft when you don't know the cards or the rules or the game is really funny

assume someone literally doesn't know anything about mtg, has never seen a card before, and then sits down to draft, cracks a pack and has to make a pick. that's the funny scenario. Why? Draft is supposed to be the entry point into the game. Don't have any cards? Draft and learn and collect. but kudos for getting bent out of shape and yet somehow calling other people man-children in the same post.

Opened a box of Modern Masters 2015. Lots of marked up cards from the shitty packs. WotC really dropped the ball on that. Now my foil Vendilion Clique has a smudge line down part of the card.

Honestly though I will probably contact Wizards about the entire box. Some packs had 16 cards with an extra uncommon, others had 14 with a missing uncommon. All the foils had damage from what appears to be from the printer roller on the top part of the card. The box was basically undraftable.

Do you have the cover of Atlas Shrugged tattooed on your inner thigh? The lack of drafting skill is fine (e.g., he picks Lightning Shrieker because it's a cool dragon deapite being a a horrible card), but if you show up to play a game, you should know how to play that game. Why? Draft is supposed to be the entry point into the game. The idea of doing a draft when you don't know the cards or the rules or the game is really funny
I believed this when I was that "approximately 12" year old kid playing magic. It has nothing to do with "man children," just common courtesy. You're not entitled to be taught how to play a (complex) game on the fly regardless of your age.
That said, I wouldn't say anything/complain/make fun of someone, because I'm a super nice person. I generally let unexperinced players execute forgotten triggers, take back incorrect land drops, take back bad on-board attacks, etc.
If someone sat down across from me and said "I literally don't know how to play this game" (or indicated as much), I'd probably have to call a judge, because there's a difference between helping a new player here and there and teaching someone from scratch. I would consider it a rude thing to do, to put someone in that position. I would never do it and actively avoided doing it when I was a kid.

The lack of Monopoly skill is fine (e.g., he picks terrier because dogs are cute despite the race car being the obvious best token), but if you show up to play a game, you should know how to play that game.

Just for clarity's sake I wasn't calling you a man-child. It was directed at the people in Thrillho's story who complained about the kid.assume someone literally doesn't know anything about mtg, has never seen a card before, and then sits down to draft, cracks a pack and has to make a pick. that's the funny scenario. Why? Draft is supposed to be the entry point into the game. Don't have any cards? Draft and learn and collect. That said, the only way to learn MTG other than sitting down at that table is if you know someone who will teach you. If you've seen the game and are interested in getting into it but don't know anybody who plays, but you're discouraged from sitting down and playing and trying to learn, then you're locked out. Drafts are the budg casist of the budg cas's. If the kid can't do what he did at a draft then you're basically telling him he's not allowed in the game.

My friend and I were talking about that after the tournament. MTG players are really hostile to new people -- particularly women (*shines white knight's armor to a brilliant sheen and brushes horse*). Magic is "the big thing I know good" for a lot of people, so having a skill that they're good at makes it .. idk, they want to take out their frustration on someone my tomahawk dunking in their face, so the best way they can do that is to a new player.
It's just atrocious when you realize they're getting your ego boner from slam dunking in the face of a literal child and then complaining about how this child was ill equipped to participate in a slam dunk contest against a full-grown adult man who has months to years of experience aggressively driving basketballs into the dark heart of the net.

DotP is one of many entry points for the brand. I would argue, aside from having a better interface than MTGO and serving as a tutorial, it's not a particularly good one (deck customization, being one the biggest highlights of the game, is unbelievably narrow and not representative of the actual game, for one).
You know what else is a low-risk, low-level entry point for the game? FNM. Tuesday night whatever. "Arena" league (or whatever iteration currently exists or whatever local stores have spun the idea off into in the event it doesn't anymore). These are low-risk, non-zero payout events that new and old players can enter and do a Magic in a realistic setting.
Magic is a social game, despite the fact that many of the players are not types of people worth socializing with. There are entire stores dedicated to it and other collectible card games. There are huge GPs. Even MTGO relies entirely on players around the world constantly wanting to play Magic with another human person. DotP does not offer a new player this experience and does not prepare a player for this facet of the game. At all.
Without these low entry points, Magic atrophies because new fish don't enter the pool. Telling people to get the fuck out because they're getting on at one of the lowest steps in the tournament wrung because there really isn't feasibly another low-bar to entry like it scares people away from the game. Eventually, DotP is all you have left because no one else is going to be left to play with you.

Also, you're saying this about a 12 year old. 12 year olds get a pass because they barely have a decade of life experience under their belts. They're not particularly bright and most haven't even hit puberty, and likely spend the majority of their down time smashing action figures (or their digital equivalent because IDK technology and kids, post-9/11 world, Minecraft) into each other and making explosion sounds. The fact that this kid asked to go to a big event with fat Asian guys and spindly neck beards, likely not anticipating that they were going to actively yell at him, takes a lot of balls, especially given that his probably haven't descended.
Sorry you were more highly evolved at age probably around 12, but I don't see what good that evolution did you when you're actively insulting a child's inconsequential life choices as a grown-ass man.

So should I say you're kind of a dunce because I was playing and placed 33rd out of 360+ entrants in the equivalent of the Pro Tour for Pokemon when you were first discovering card games?
Your opinion is to be actively hostile toward someone who is interested in participating in a thing you like because it's inconvenient for you to have to show them how to do that thing. That's detrimental to the health of the game and, given that the person is a 12 year old and not an adult man, generally just a shitty attitude to have about other people.

Also your assumption was he sat down and said "I am 12 and teach me how to play."
What happened was he sat down and hadn't drafted before, tried to draft, did it wrong, and a fat Asian man across from him started shouting at him for having never drafted before and not intrinsically knowing this apparently fundamental truth of the universe.
He also P1P1 a Deathmist Raptor and I'm sure there was so much salt emanating from that table that they could have cleared a highway during a snowstorm.
