Let's a Build a Deck Together: Wanderwine Prophets Edition

Postby Azrael » Wed Jan 08, 2014 7:03 pm

Thought we'd try something new.

http://magiccards.info/query?q=wanderwi ... rd&s=cname

So, this card makes me giggle inside. I have visions of tutoring it up using Seahunter and going to town on people. http://magiccards.info/query?q=seahunter&v=card&s=cname

Best support colors for the deck *probably* involve either green, or black, for increased tutor potential.

First question is probably what general would be niftiest to run. My thoughts run towards Prime Speaker Zegana, Sygg, River Cutthroat, Sygg, River Guide, or Rafiq of the Many. Recasting a merfolk general might also be ok, up to a certain point.

nAfter that, we'd need to determine what the rest of the deck is supposed to do. I'm inclined against running a bunch of slots of little aggro fish, but including a good number of fish is probably a good idea for purposes of champion, and saccing.

Mirror Weave and Mirror Entity might help in that department, though. So could things like Cauldron of Souls, Mimic Vat, Soul Foundry.

Presume our card pool includes *everything* short of Grim Tutor, or Imperial Seal. So, old and new dual lands, Cruel Tutor, Sylvan Tutor, Mana Drain, FoW, Misdirection, Vampiric Tutor, Personal Tutor, all the fetches, etc.

Which way should I pick?

Cards that make Fish tokens:
[cards]Lullmage Mentor
Stonybrook Schoolmaster
Summon the School
Benthicore[/cards]

Ways to get the Wanderwine Prophets:
[cards]Merrow Harbinger
Seahunter
Altar of Bone
Eladamri's Call
Survival of the Fittest
Birthing Pod
Fauna Shaman
Cruel Tutor
Demonic Tutor
Diabolic Intent
Vampiric Tutor
Fierce Empath
Garruk Relentless
Momir Vig, Simic Visionary
Primal Command
Worldly Tutor
Sylvan Tutor[/cards]

Also, you probably want some number of cards that make Wanderwine Prophets unblockable and/or protect it:
[cards]Executioner's Hood
Prowler's Helm
Trailblazer's Boots
Whispersilk Cloak
Rogue's Passage
Aqueous Form
Minamo Sightbender
Merfolk Sovereign
Steel of the Godhead
Thassa, God of the Sea
Zhuge Jin, Wu Strategist
Protective Bubble
nDeepchannel Mentor
Sun Quan, Lord of Wu
Swords of X and Y[/cards]

Looking at the list, I thing UWG probably has the most going for it. Your thoughts?

If you're going for total destruction, creating Fish tokens and Voltroning Wanderwine would be the "best" route. Of course, it's a total dick move, but it can win.

[card]Conjurer's Closet[/card] + Benthicore should do it.

Derevi might be a good general choice. Taps down everyone else's blockers while you're repeatedly swinging at the guy who doesn't have any. That way you can clear the entire table instead of just the guy who can't block a 4/4.

Too bad you can't sac her to the Prophets' ability and go infinite right there... Runed Stalactite for the lols? Works with Mirror Entity too.

I don't play it (playing good cards is for scrubs), but everyone and their mother who plays ETB creatures never seems to forget about it.

Stardust: Das nasty.

Same. I mean, I play Blind Seer with no mana ramp. And Eight-and-a-Half-Tails with 68 Plains.

Primers incoming, btw. As soon as I have some free time.

I like Derevi too. It's the right colors IMO and you can abuse the Tap/Untap ability:

Swing at some guy with no blockers with 5 creatures, tap 5 of another player's blockers and take another turn, repeat.

Stack a dozen Tap/Untap abilities on Stonybrook Schoolmaster - create a bunch of fish.

Load up the deck with counters so you can tap out, swing out, and untap your lands for countermagic.

Derevi, hmm? I like it. You can also untap your Seahunter for multiple activations and ramp up to the Wanderwine by untapping Mana Vault/Sol Ring etc.

It also combos very nicely with the Stonybrook Schoolmaster, who's also fetchable off the Seahunter. 8-)

Let's see, other nifty Merfolk to consider:

Cold-Eyed Selkie
Empress Galina (errata Merfolk)
Merfolk Looter/Enclave Cryptologist???
Jolting Merfolk
Overtaker (errata Merfolk - that's random)
Seasinger
Surgespanner
Thada Adel
Tidebinder Mage
Wake Thrasher
