Purph was aweful for the tourney since I was racing every round and had to board it out in the majority of the games, but in a more open field, he's awesome.

His pump ability saves me from boarding trash like trumpets blast(may still board it cause...scrump).

Ashcloud is dope as fuck. There's a different deck I could build that's bigger, but at that point, you have to start asking if devotion red is better. You don't have to though because Phoenix is fine in all non-combo archetypes and matchups.
Correct on all points, especially about the Trumpet Blast. I was actually pondering that the other day.

Your devotion statement is pretty on-point. I asked myself the same question when I first posted
the deck.

However would devotion red work when we have only eidolon as a good 2 drop? I saw somewhere devo red on ths forum however I cant find it now ;/

You would play Eidolon, Hammer, Phoenix, Chandra, and Sarkhan as your big enablers. Prophetic Flamespear is also a probable include but Rabblemaster is just a better card overall.

With so many things having big asses out there like Siege Rhino, Courser, Caryatid, Mantis Rider, Doomwake Giant (which is going to catch on) to brickwall the offensive, I'm not sure how I feel on the idea of maindecking Eidolon.

Ever thought about splashing White? I started doing it in my Aggro Red and it brings a lot to the table: Chained, Ride Down, Hoplite, and that white bear with Prowless and Lifelink is an excellent SB substitution for Eidelon against other aggressive decks.

White can even utilize Iroas.

Ride Down is pretty sick actually. I was considering a white splash in this kind of deck as well. There's a lot to be said for the sideboard options it opens up too.

Waiting for Khaos to make a Ride Down pun.

Ok this one. I was thinking about DerViles (he has them in SB).

Also need info about both Purphoros and Ashcloud Phoenix.
I brought in Purphoros in any sort of match up where I thought my opponent was overloaded on removal. He makes all of my creatures into Shock which lets me keep up pressure. His pump effect is also good for finishing up the game when I keep drawing 1 drops and land.

Ashcloud Phoenix is great in longer, grindier match ups. It's amazingly resilient. My second round opponent, the one playing BUG control, told me that he was going to put in more exile effects just for the bird. However, I think I'm going to side them out against other red decks. It's a little on the slow side.

@LP: I can agree that Titan's Strength
was my most sided out card, but it seems necessary if I'm running Swiftspear. Without Titan's Strength there's no way a turn 1 Swiftspear can make it through a Caryatid or Courser. If she can't make it through, then why run her in the first place? If we take both out, then that frees up +8 slots for other cards.

Maybe something like this

Can someone explain the term 'Scrumper' to me? I feel like I'm missing out. :(

Other than that, I like how some of the decks look in this thread, and may be switching over to mono-red from Jeskai.

Did terribly at the event(went x-2) because I played Hordeling outburst vs. hall of triumph which you should NEVER do. Updated the deck slightly today which mostly made it worse, but before my buddy crushed the tourney with his mardu deck, we deck teched and rebuilt it to this beast:

[deck]4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Monastery Swiftspear
3 Foundry Street Denizen
4 War-Name Aspirant
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Hordeling Outburst
1 Ashcloud Phoenix
1 Purphoros, God of the Forge

4 Lightning Strike
3 Magma Jet
4 Stoke the Flames

2 Hall of Triumph

22 Mountain

Sideboard:
1 Searing Blood
1 Harness by Force
3 Arc Lightning
2 Magma Spray
2 Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
2 Mountain
1 Blinding Flare
1 Purphoros, God of the Forge
2 Ashcloud Phoenix[/deck]

The sideboard is whatever, but the important cards are Arc lightning, Sarkhan, the 4 drops and the lands. Me and Yani did a lot of conversating and we figured out
that the deck just really needs to hit 3 mana because hall, horde and rabble are all busted. The deck is worth playing because of all the synergies.

As for the tourney today, I went 4-2 but the losses came early so my middle/later matchups where against suspect competiton. Nonetheless, we learned a lot today.

Firstly, the deck needs access to sarkhan for the Jeskai tempo matchup. The way to beat the tempo deck is to kill there threats while being aggressive ourselves and sarkhan does both of those thing.

We also learned that our deck just needed more lands. I wasn't losing to flood since I had a healthy amount of scry and manasinks. In my last round, I meat junk midrange with 8 lands in play because Phoenix is really good.

Strongly feel this is one of the best decks in the format.

Meet Scrumper: :scrump:

Scrumper loses a lot at Magic, typically going X-2 at FNM. Scrumper has no girlfriend. His ex spurned him many moons ago and now he deals with his misogynistic rage by listening to heavy metal music and pretending to be tough guy nerd at FNM, to which his mother drives him. Scrumper is a budget player that only prefers to play with Red commons. He can't understand why he loses sometimes. At his best, he's simply a beta male with women issues. At his worst, he's a whiny, self-absorbed man-child with borderline rape tendencies.

I was wondering if maybe Denizen should just be Frenzied Goblin? What do you think?

Denizens fine. If you play Frenzied Goblin, your turn 3 gets awkward(you tap out), but your turn 4 is much better if you hit land number 4(you spend 3 mana and get a goblin activation).

The deck even has a go big postboard plan, but it's suicide to ride a high end like that without adding more land.

Instead of using Phoenix, he went for the Butcher and was able to utilize Mardu Ascendency over Outburst.

Are fetches a mistake? Does the life loss outweigh the thinning in a deck like this?

Posted: Mon Sep 29, 2014 11:55 pm
by LP, of the Fires
Yeah, fetches are bad. They don't add any value to your deck other then irrelevant deck thinning at a very real cost of life loss. This is compounded by the fact that your deck actually wants to hit land drops. You really want to hit 3 mana and your list wants four.

Man, I really want them to bring back landfall for this block.

I'm puttinng
this together, except I am subbing Stormbreath Dragon for Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker, because I don't have any Sarkhans yet and I still need two more Ashcloud Phoenix, one more Arc Lightning, and four Hordeling Outburst. Picking those up before Wednesday night.

Played the deck tonight with -4 aspirant, +1 Denizen, +1 Jet, + 1Chandra, +1 Crowd's favor.

Seemed great minus the fact that aspirant is a house in the mirror. Got absolutely crushed by it(obv didn't draw timely removal).

The fact that I didn't have my own aspirant to trade with it may or may not have been relevant, but it was crushing. Also considering a copy of circle of flame in the board over an arc lightning. They come in the same matchups(for the most part) and circle improves the curve.

I would consider running Eidolon in sideboard against the new Ascendancy combo. They can answer it, but I think it can have the same roll that Pyrostatic Pillar have in my Legacy Burn sideboard against Elf's...

Googled him and found out he is(was?) one of the top PUA in the world actually. Which I believe because the guy is cool as shit.

When he was eating his mango's during the player meeting at the GPT, all I could think of was stromkirk noble. He's even a blue player at heart that knows how to red mage correctly. Baller.

No name drop? There's a small chance I would know his name if you wrote it, since I've read The Game by Neil Strauss like 3 times now. Not really for PUA reasons, but it turned out to be a really entertaining book.

LP, where are you at with this?

Played tempo tonight, and it was fun, but if people prepare for it (3 people played it at my LGS tonight, thus a lot of hate...aka bow of nylea) it can be a stressful grind fest. Considering this for tcg states for the sake of hoping to get lucky.
