ETA on Diestoremoval?

Postby Alex » Wed Apr 03, 2013 9:06 pm

I got express permission from the folks over at Starcity to plug you guys in some articles on the condition that you get a proper domain name. I had heard you had one picked out and purchased, so what's the holdup?

working on transferring this domain onto that site. also because we don't have a landing page if i'm up to date on our inner workings, which i should be given my title here.

additionally, our owners are currently in the process of "having real lives" and "globetrotting" two activities that take them away from active work on this site, though my excuse is in part due to not having the technical knowhow.

It's diestoremoval.com, right? Not .net or something? I will pass the word along to my lords and masters.

Also if there's any way I can help, have someone contact me. I'd love to help, I have a lot of editorial experience and a little bit of design experience, I could be an asset for sure.

Sadly, this delay is 100% attributed to my personal incompetence.

I have all the info and permissions to bind my server to the new domain (which was purchased at the beginning of the year), but the last time I tried, I broke the site.

For now I've just set a dummy site on another server I maintain for testing stuff without breaking this forum during trial and error, but I'm still reading pages and pages tutorials about the BIND protocol

To my defense I'll add that my professional background is aerospace engineering, not IT technologies, so this has been a thorn on my side.

If someone has knowledge on how to bind the DNS domain to the apache server which is running on a Debian machine, he'd have our eternal gratitude. Otherwise, I'll end up learning by trial and error, but I am at a huge work peak as of now, which doesn't help neither.

Try asking over in the Fires of Salvation thread, I'm pretty sure there are quite a few people there in the IT field that might be able to help.

I also put out some feelers, including to the local tech college, so we'll see what turns up there. I may end up having to attend a college frat party or two in my efforts to network, but as long as you all know what a huge burden that is for me, I will do this service for you.

I'd certainly like to see some forward motion, especially considering how many of us are looking to put fourth exclusive content. It would be a really good starting point to something that could turn out to be profitable and rewarding. Right now I work for Starcity doing editorial work (basically anything ferret can't keep up with/doesn't know a ton about, usually standard and limited standard formats.) so while I'd like to write content for them, there's nobody there to edit my work, which means that it's hard-pressed to actually see a posting on the website.

Plus I want to see MTGS squirm.

I'm looking forward to promoting it on reddit too...that's a community that I think will be open to hanging out here, and without the retarded moderation of MTGS, will likely have more people that will fit in well.

Thanks for the support guys, we are hoping to have the domain up soon. Support is welcome in all facets (IT assistance, PR, recruiting new members, etc)

I edit and format articles for posting. Grammar check, spell check, add links and decklists, position appropriate pictures, etc. Generally when we get an article, it's a bland, boring text file with no links or pictures. I make it look and sound pretty.

I also serve as a filter for bad information, which has come in handy a few times when people write about blatantly bad card choices.

Just a heads up: I worked a few hours today on trying to bind the dummy server I set up for this, but still no luck.

I did learn one or two things so here's to hoping I will have success soon.

if it doesn't work i'll talk to my gf and/or her roommate after work since they both have websites they run on their own. i don't know if they're binding anything to a .com or the other way around though.

I've done lots of DNS stuff on Linux. I haven't done exactly that, but I'm willing to bet I could figure it out.

After doing a little research, it looks like you just have to edit some config files. I'd be happy to give it a shot.

you never answered the PM I sent you >.<

I can give you root access to the clone server I set up for testing binding (I have installed the BIND9 packaage on debian), you'd be able to setup the httpd.conf file, etc...

I'd give you the diestoremoval DNS info too. Basically you'd have free reign on the dummy server. Since the only difference with the other server is that the actual ip differs by the last XXX numbers (as in 123.123.123.XXX). If you succeed I'll just replicate the process on the actual server, at a time I can bring it down safely.

Would that be OK?

I don't understand why we can't just point our site at the phpbb IP address and use the domain management options we're supposed to have access to -- this is supposed to be a really easy thing built into the admin control panel.

that's what I was telling you, the phpbb3 admin control panel only handles the stuff related to the forum sofware. IP domain binding is a more low-level operation that you need to handle within the server itself.
