[Furiosas of Salvation] - Beta Max

Am I the only one who thinks that a lot of the men who argue for this cause so vehemently, in secret, are interested in getting more women in the game solely out of a selfish desire to increase their odds of getting a "cool gamer girlfriend?" I mean, that's essentially the definition of a "white knight, "right?
You are not the only one. And I think it's the cool gamer girlfriend thing, plus looking all open minded and "womyn ally"ish for women outside of the game.

My wife plays. She hates being treated preferentially because she doesn't feel she's earned it just by being a woman. And most of the other girls that play there are...horrid. Just obnoxious and unpleasant. I don't want more obnoxious people playing, whether they have boobs or not.

[Furiosas of Salvation] - Beta Max

I haven't read the other article, but there's been a LOT around reddit and other places recently about women in magic, and preferential treatment has been one of the main things that a lot of big voices are calling for, so I don't see it as in poor taste at all.

Then again, I don't ever see arguing against preferential treatment as in poor taste.

Davis said, essentially, "Hey, it's actually kinda sexist/racist/whateverist to treat people differently on the basis of their sex/race/whatever, even if it's preferential treatment. In the case of women in magic, we should celebrate those who show exceptional performance, on par with others who perform excellently...not lower the bar arbitrarily to include some token amount so that others feel "welcome." Just be cool and decent to everyone."

Comments on the article and on reddit made it quite clear this was wholly unacceptable, and anyone who felt differently should be shamed and outcast from society. Men are bad, and women should have a lower bar in magic because feelings.

Jim Davis just triggered the community
And the fact that people vehemently disagreed with him, and actually pushed it to the point that star city pulled the article is just horrifying.

Fuckin' white knights and neckbeards. I'm actually raging right now to the point that I just can't articulate my anger appropriately.

No, that's a solid plan.

Hey, wife...we've been married a decade, but it's time to send you packing. Because reasons.

Now, do I keep the kids, or send them with her? Or even more devious, send her packing, THEN send them packing?

I seriously doubt we won't go back at all, but I'm not dying to go play magic. The GP left a pretty bad taste in my mouth, but we've also put quite a bit of time and money into the hobby to just drop it permanently.

Ultimately though, time will tell...

Yep. And it's like, $13-14 entry.

It's crap...but it's what we have.

At pack per win, sure...winning is fun, but the experience is the bigger deal. This is how we often spend our Friday night out, so playing the same deck repeatedly just to win three packs isn't completely amazeballs.

The wife was getting frustrated when she kept getting Kolaghan's Command P1P1 in draft...we ended up with five or six of them.

Not looking so bad now! Also glad we hung onto the foil one we pulled from...something. Draft or prize packs (credit at my store sucks, and we try hanging onto the packs to draft with friends, but it just never seems to work out, and we've got a stack of packs on one of our shelves. After a point, we just crack any new ones.)

So...my computer keeps bugging me to take advantage of some free upgrade to windows 10.

I didn't even know they were making a new version already, and I'm too lazy to REALLY look into it. From what I've read, it will be "better" in the long term, but buggy in the short term.

I believe the latter part wholeheartedly. Not sure if I buy into the former though...should I pull the trigger?

Interesting. I got my B.S. in Econ, but I'm about to start my MStat in Econometrics. Things like the hypergeometric distribution post you made and such just made me figure you had done something along those lines, but given what the engineering students I've been in classes with (I had to take Calc 1-3 as pre-reqs for my masters...Calculus for Economists didn't cut it, tons of various engineering majors in those calc classes,) I shouldn't be surprised.
That sounds like my experience as well. We took so many math courses that many of us could have gotten a math minor with another quarter or two of coursework. I was already behind schedule at that point so I elected to GTFO and get a job instead
I should have looked into that, but I honestly had zero desire to be involved with math or (especially) stats once I had the required courses done. Then, in my last semesters before finishing, I discover a little emphasized (at my school...the econ program is seriously into the heterodox, which in this case, means a lot of the touchy-feely "making money makes other people sad, so let's be Marxists" BS, and less of the mathy, actual skill type stuff,) program within the Econ department that introduced me to Econometrics, and economic analysis tools as a whole, and I changed course from a future MBA to a future MStat, and love it.

Of course, by the time I was taking my calc classes, I already had my bachelors. They made me take Trig before I could take Calc, even though I had already done Calc for Economists.

Ugh.

Looking for a new deck to play...I want to start playing in my LGS's paid tournament (win packs, as opposed to the free tournament, where you just win a promo) so I can start recouping costs...thus, I want to win, but have no clue what I want to play. I've been playing almost exclusively limted against other people (constructed against the computer only) since Gatecrash Game Day, except for my testing group, which really didn't last long.

Big problems are, 1) I'm SO finicky when it comes to my decks...I've got so many stupid rules that I just plain can't get past (i.e. I don't want to play Thragtusk, I'm not spending buttloads on Voices or Geists, I want to play something competitive, yet oddball and out there...) and 2) I've got SOME money I'm willing to spend, but I don't want to sink a TON in, especially on stuff that'll be rotating soon, so every deck I look at, I consider what I have vs. what I'll
have to buy.

Yeah, I know, this is probably a common problem...but I feel like whining about it like I'm unique, dammit.

Oh well, time to go do some quick lifting, then shower.

Got bored, wandered over to Sally, ran onto typical Kamahl bullshit here, couldn't leave it alone. Why do people feel the need to post such trash? Does anyone really feel like a better person by posting that they're getting a better in than someone else when it's obviously fictitious? Or am I just the only
ignoramus who doesn't know about all the wonderful, selfless card shops that can afford to sell off MM in bulk at discounted prices?
What's the MSRP for a box of MM? He said he was getting them for $160, right?
MSRP is around $170, he claimed to be getting 3 boxes at $160; prices are currently $250-300. I know some stores made decent deals to regular customers, but the thread progression was typical braggy trash; someone (1st time poster) said they got 3 boxes at $180, then Kamahl piped that he got 3 at $160. Yes, this might fall in the realm of possible realities, but I call bullshit dick-showing contest among amateurs. It got under my skin because someone was honestly asking about the reality of finding a reasonably-priced box and the whole thread was at least half trash talk. Besides, I was in the mood to stir the pot a bit...bored at work does that .
Yeah, I don't see why someone would need to brag about how many boxes they're getting at
what price. Not like it makes him a better player or anything. Congrats, you got a good deal. Here's your "Super Shopper" hat.

Fuck, I'm taking a nap as soon as I get home. I have to figure out this sleep issue.

You guys are right, autistic is a stupid fucking word in general, since you can't even use it to describe people who are autistic.

I'm starting to worry that we're getting a bit PC.
Still haven't answered my question. Describing people as autistic
is fine. Implying that autism is a bad thing is a dick move.
Being autistic isn't a BAD thing, but it certainly isn't a desirable thing. Acting like someone autistic, when you aren't, IS a bad thing.

I, like everyone else, have my own pathology. Making every single "problem" people have into a protected class is a fast road to a society of mediocrity. Feeling shame about my downfalls has hurt my feelings, but also pushed me to get past them.
Sorry if I'm coming off as defensive. Just to provide some background, my son is autistic. He has several friends whom are also autistic. They are an extremely friendly group of kids. They are also very bright. So when someone equates autism with stupidity, it tends to upset me.
Completely understandable. My kids are not autistic, but when my younger son was born (keep in mind, I wasn't around for the birth of the older son, or I'd probably have felt the same way) I was terrified he'd be
autistic. My wife has a cousin who is extremely low-functioning autistic...to the point that eventually, he'll have to be institutionalized. Every time my son didn't hit a milestone right on time, I'd start panicking.

If he'd turned out to be autistic, I'd still love him, but I know things would be very different, and much much harder. We need to call a spade a spade. Autism IS a defect. It doesn't mean your son or anyone else with autism is bad, or wrong, but they have issues, just like everyone else, that they and their circles have to learn to function with.

Bottom line is, I'd say anyone has to admit that autism is not a desirable thing to have. No one wishes for it. But, those who have it, or are close to someone who does have to make the choice about how much they're going to let it define them. Pointing out that someone is displaying traits of autism in a pejorative fashion doesn't reflect on your son or his friends unless his condition (not sure what the proper term is here...I don't
think "disease" fits) is what defines him. I'd like to think that isn't how you think of your son, or how he thinks of himself. He is HIM...he is your son. He's not "an autistic," but someone who happens to have autism.

I have no clue if I'm making any sense...I've had super bad insomnia lately, but feel free to question if I'm not being clear.

Would you guys be interested in doing one of those Guild Wars type deals on Cockatrice within FoS? Or maybe even opening it up to everyone? I've got an idea for a hella Dimir deck, and I think all-in-all it could be fun, especially since it's a "play whenever you want" type thing.
I'd like to do anything that helps me get familiar with Cockatrice, and the conventions that people expect to be followed in a friendly environment. I just barely downloaded it the other day, and tried playing a local game against myself, and found myself wondering exactly how much detail opponents expect...when you tap a dual land, do you need to increment the color of mana that you want, and the decrease the counter when you spend it, or do people just
take it on faith, and bust you if you try to do something illegal?

I really don't have the tolerance or patience to just log on and try with randoms...but I really need a testing tool other than Forge, since my testing group fell apart.

I wonder where he's at. I know at least one store in my area that is not taking preorders, and is selling at MSRP, on a first-come, first-serve basis.

I'm not sure if they're setting a per-person box limit though.

1) So true. I've been guilty of this in my teens...the whole, "I don't want to be a jerk...I just want to be a nice guy" thing. Being a decent person and getting girls isn't mutually exclusive. Being a spineless wimp (the sterotypical passive-aggressive, emotionally-manipulative "nice guy") and getting girls IS.

That's the part that I think drives me nuts the most, and I know I've been guilty of without realizing it until later. Guys try to bend over backwards to do all sorts of nice things for girls, because that's what Hugh Grant movies tell us they want, and when the girl isn't into them as more than a friend, they (if they have ANY balls...) give
the big romantic "I'm the guy who's been there all along" speech that again, Hugh Grant has unfortunately embedded in us. THEN the girl feels guilty, you've ruined your friendship because it's now uncomfortable and awkward, and you STILL don't have the girl. Pop culture encourages emotional manipulation on a level that's really just sick and wrong.

This is why Stonewright is so absurd (allowing you to always have maximized mana efficiency ~ no other mana sink has ever done that!)
But, I thought Cedric Phillips said Stonewright was bad, and that with Gatecrash's release, we could finally dump it from red decks and add awesome stuff like Skullcrack?

I know ham's technique -

Step (1): Stop masturbating

Step (2): Become a fucking manly stud due to his body's overproduction of testosterone

Step (3): Invite a girl over to watch the first episode of GoT.

Step (4): ???

Step (5): Profit. This also involves the woman making a big plate of bacon for breakfast.

It's a little bit more work than Z's or redthirts's technique, which just involves being born amazingly awesome and having trademark body parts such as cauliflower ears and/or 12 mile long fucksticks, but it does work.
To be fair, I had to earn those ears.

Honestly, I probably do fall into the 'nice guy' category, but I don't make the mistake of treating women I want any different to anyone else. They're no better than you, and you shouldn't treat them like they are.

Note I said nothing about maturity, you're on your own as far as that goes. Also, relationships. Total NFI over here.
To be fair, "nice guy" doesn't mean...nice guy.

It means pushover. It means wimp. When a dude says he's a "nice guy," it means that he's actually a doormat for cute girls.

I'm a dick, but I'm an equal opportunity dick. I'm also a polite one, as bizarre as that may sound. I don't cut in lines, just because evidence suggests no one will stop me (my wife knew a dude who would do that, and if anyone would call him out on it, he'd just ask them what they were going to do about it,) but anyone and everyone is open for teasing if they deserve it.

I know many techniques. My dad never taught me anything about girls, TV and movies portray it inaccurately, and girls lie/don't know what they like.

Luckily for me, I discovered the pickup community in 2003 (from a warcraft 3 forum) and learned why I wasn't getting any success.

I'm not involved with them anymore, but it was very useful for a time as I learned what women respond to, how an attractive man behaves and how to take control of my life.
Again, this is pretty much it exactly.

The pickup community seemed to really make it big around then...that's when I discovered it, learned what I needed to know, and got out.

I don't know if it's for sales, or what, but I think the "mainstream" PUA guys have kind
of taken it too far, as evidenced by the behavior of Wolowitz on The Big Bang Theory...or even Magic's own Mike Flores. I thought it was silly when the advice back in the day was "Even if you don't smoke, get the coolest lighter that makes the biggest flame you can find, so you have a conversation starting option anytime a hot girl asks you for a light." Back in the fraternity...the dudes who got novelty lighters were the ones who got mocked. Nowadays, the PUA advice seems to roughly be "Dress like a clown, so you stand out."

Pass.

I don't like that...it makes me feel like I'm putting together a plan, which makes me feel skeezy.

The way I look at it, Jay (I think...) from the 40 Year Old Virgin said it best. "Stop putting the pussy on a pedestal."

Girls, especially good-looking ones, get SO used to guys fawning all over them, thinking that they're making headway by complimenting them when that's what EVERY guy does, are bored/turned off by nice guys, who tell them more of the nice things they hear every day. Interesting guys will challenge them, especially on their BS, and won't jump to praise them for every little
thing (if anything.)

Just have fun...flirting is fun. Hooking up is fun. Making yourself socially subservient to a girl just in the HOPE that she might spare a glance your way is not.

We aren't all born from royalty, Alex.
Anybody can learn to talk to women. It's easy. They're practically all the same, too. You can use the exact same tactics on every single one. Ask Ham.
I know I'm usually making some "funny&
quot; (to me, anyway) remark...but I'm entirely serious when I say that this is possibly the truest thing I've ever seen/heard said in regards to intergender communications.

The second is something *I* said...I was at my LGS, and this guy in high school was talking about this girl that he "sorta likes" (I swear, there was almost a "tee hee" after that...young, giggly bastards.) The wife of the LGS owner, who also "works" there sometimes started giving him epically bad advice, with the assurance "You can listen to me, I'm a woman, so I know what girls want."

I pulled him aside and said "Shawn...never, EVER listen to another female when it comes to advice on women. Women not only do not know what other women want, but also don't even know what THEY really want. They will unintentionally lie and totally mislead you. They are the devil!"
I've never gotten any advice from a woman that helped me get laid. Not even once.

I had a long
period during college where I had to train away my old habits and undo the old bullshit that 13 years of Catholic school and being a "nice guy" had cemented in place.
That's pretty much the short version of what I was saying.

You know how they say "nice guys finish last?" And girls will always say "Oh, that isn't true, I like nice guys"

No, it's true...and girls lie.

With that said, I think that going all in on slivers is going to be the wave of the future. Why? Cause slivers...fuck yeah. I loved those bastards back in the day.
Pretty sure you you may have just offended every sliver player out there when you sandwiched that between your statement on deck design and your hilarious sig.
Damn.

I was trying to offend a LOT more people than just that.

Dane on deck design: "I make terrible decks that don't even look good on paper, and a little girl with 'slow in the minds' could probably take a random pile of cards and do a better job. Every single Timmytastic crap card looks like like gold to me, and I'm easy prey for better traders and players alike. Take my advice at your peril."

Just spent about 4 hours at the beach having fun in the sun. Life in Florida is good. :)
I really fucking wish I was at the beach right now. A good number of my friends have beach houses in New Jersey, and I'm back here with 5 pages of shit to do for this term project. One of the few things I hate more than writing a term paper is doing a
term "project". Laugh at me for all my "high school problems", but honors classes really do suck. Reading this forum is one of the only things keeping me motivated through this, but then again, its probably also the reason I'm not done yet. I kind of wish there was a better "ugh; fuck me; I'm tired and don't wanna do this shit anymore" face than :frown: :slant: :gonk: In under 3 weeks, this shit will be over and I can partake in all the Magic, beach-going and GoT/Firefly/Community/Futurama-watching that I want :)
Look at it this way: you're busting your ass and sacrificing fun time now for a chance to
have your fun at a later date when you'll be ahead in life. It sucks now, but it'll be worth it down the road.
Exactly what I was trying to get across, but probably stated better.

Also, freedom, I got the feeling that by "high school problems," you MEANT your honors classes, and it probably seemed like I hadn't read your message when I said that high school problems stop mattering later in life. I just wanted to clear up (though you haven't said there was any misunderstanding...but I overcommunicate. Old habit from my last job.) that I didn't think you'd said that, but I still felt it needed to be said. I've actually had this conversation with two different groups recently...one was in a class at school, where over the last three semesters, I've gotten to know several people rather well (you tend to run into the same people the further you get in a major, especially if it's a small major) and spoke with them about this as well as my wife. It's shocking to look back
at the things that gave us grief in high school, and realize how much nearly all of those things, ASIDE from academics, are non-issues a year, two years, five years, ten years down the road...

So, if any of those are what are eating at you, I'm sure you've heard it from parents already, and who the hell am I to be giving you life advice, since we've never met...but it's all true. High school problems, with few exceptions, are left behind at high school.

I think I'll skip Community. Chevy Chase is in it, so that's a definite "No!" for me...
Really? He's hilarious in the show and his character is very different from many of his previous ones.
I guessed that would be the case. But I have enough unwatched stuff anyway, so it still very low on my to-watch list
He won't be in the next season. He got upset enough by how they were
writing him that he quit in the middle of filming Season 4, and they had to do some emergency adjustments.

He's actually kinda the anti-Chevy in this show, because he normally plays the smoothest, coolest dude in the room (Fletch, anyone?) and here he's not even up to Clark Griswald levels of smooth, but he sure THINKS he is. (His character does, I mean.)

Keep it up...in the end, high school problems are unimportant, but the other things you're doing for your future, like honors classes ARE.

Sounds like you're in the home stretch. Just a little more.

Give it half a season. I loved it from the get-go, but I also realize that they took a few episodes to hit their stride and find their voice.
