And GR Devotion sort of died off

Forgot to put mono blue on there but yeah

Are any of the mono red variants worth testing against, people will inevitably play it but is it actually good?

Red White Devotion is good, it's basically mono red

RDW is okay, kinda shitty but it will be around

On a side note, would a standard gauntlet of

1. UW Control
2. Mono Black Devotion
3. G/R Devotion
4. Various R/x devotion decks

be a decent start to a standard gauntlet?
U/x Control(doesn't matter which, lets say straight UW)
Mono Black
R/w Devotion
Orzhov Humans
Mono-Blue

Those would be the decks I'd bother testing against. Your region should also influence your choice. If I where in the upper-east coast, I'd skew my prep towards control decks. In so-cal, you see lots of agro decks. This info is of course hard to come by unless you play lots of tourneys yourself or have friends who are grinders.

Other decks you may play against at some point:

Esper
G/r Devotion
BW midrange/control
Boros Humans
RDW

If you notice,
most of the above are versions of the outlined decks minus G/r devotion so it'd be unproductive to do tons testing vs. Orhzov and Boros humans when the lists are so similar. Just be aware of the differences and if you have friends your testing with that are playing decks not included in the list, take on the role of enemy pilot to familiarize yourself with different aspects of the format as they run their deck through the gauntlet.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

Well I've played approx 50 theros sealed events and 200+ drafts so I'd much prefer to play that than modern, a format I've never played and find boring
never played
find boring
You must be a wizard.
I
don't need to have played a format competitively to evaluate the metagame and archetypes. that's what the internet is for. testing just allows for mastery which i do not have. i'm about 4-6 on mtgo with the mono-black discard i threw together. i have another build to test but i'm waiting for my next paycheck in order to buy bobs and mutavaults

The fact that you attempted to play mono-black discard competititvely in modern means you don't know enough about the format.
