Modern FNM: played goblin, won against burn, lost against burn, lost against burn, won agains martyr -> 2-2
How did you like the Goblin deck in general? I'm thinking of trying a similar one myself at some point, since got my fourth Legion Loyalist in a trade
today.
I want to play it again before saying anything definitive, yet some hands feel REALLY explosive and I grant you that Loyalist + Shared Animosity makes you feel quite omnipotent. :toot:
I played against a Goblin deck last week at Modern FNM. Like you said, certain times it felt like the deck was unstoppable. I was playing RDW and he beat me pretty handily one game when he had the nut draw. The other games I outraced him and was able to pillar/bolt his major threat cards. I'd be interested in seeing your list to see if it was the same list this guy was playing. It's the Modern deck that I plan on building just because it's so much damn fun when it works.
I think RedNihilist's deck was posted on the previous page?

Anyway, this is where I'm at for the moment with my modern goblin deck:

[deck]Lands (20)
4 Copperline Gorge
4 Stomping Ground
12
Mountain

Creatures (28)
4 Foundry Street Denizen
4 Goblin Guide
4 Mogg War Marshal
4 Legion Loyalist
4 Goblin Chieftain
4 Goblin Bushwhacker
4 Goblin Wardriver

Spells (12)
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Shared Animosity
4 Lead the Stampede

Sideboard
4 Volcanic Fallout
3 Ancient Grudge
3 Deglamer
3 Vines of Wastwood
2 Dismember
[/deck]

Green added for Lead the Stampede to get some late game boost, and to give some more sideboard options.

My son (on Gruul Aggro) got steamrolled by a kid playing a version of low-curve mono-red yesterday at the GP. Two games in a row the kid opened Legion Loyalist > BTE + LM...and he was running enough burn that he wouldn't let Tristan develop a board. I found it pretty amazing considering that my son had be T4-5 killing me all afternoon on Jund. Interestingly enough, neither of them dealt well with B/G Midrange; the early removal into Mutilate into big things they couldn't kill was more consistent against uber-aggro than Jund (at least for the hands I was getting, which admittedly were really squirrely; I'd see no Bonfires, then get 3 in my opener...bad variance).

this list has been fun and janky as hell:

[deck]21 Mountain
21 lands

3 Ash Zealot
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
3 Firefist Striker
3 Hellrider
4 Lightning Mauler
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Stromkirk Noble
29 creatures

3 Brimstone Volley
3 Pillar of Flame
4 Searing Spear
10 other spells

Sideboard
3 Blasphemous Act
4 Curse of the Pierced Heart
4 Skullcrack
4 Volcanic Strength
15 sideboard cards
[/deck]

The SB plan is pretty fun against UWr. BVolley still gets people G1 too ;D
You definitely need to see the skullcrack though if you're on the burn them out plan.

Went to FNM to play draft - won first round but my girl wanted to get dinner so I gave my opponent the win with the understanding that we'd split his prize support (he's a good Limited player and the competition wasn't too fierce that night so I figured it was a safe bet). Came back from dinner and he's about to start the final round against some real douchy guy that I'd never seen around there before.

So he's trying to explain to the guy that Prize support is 2 packs per player split equally among the undefeated after 3 rounds - there were currently 3 undefeated so they could just agree to all split the packs and call it a night or they could play for it.

Well, the guy couldn't quite grasp the concept of all the prize going to only the undefeated so the explanation took a while but he finally got it.

To complicate matters, though, the other undefeated player was playing down to douche's gf, so he kept saying
things like "if we split I'll get x packs, but if my gf wins I'll get all the packs because I'll be the only undefeated" and we kept telling him that only works if he also wins but he seemed to think that his imminent victory was assured.

Anywho, because this guy was such a condescending ass, I told my guy that splitting was no longer an option and he ran that dude the fuck over 2-0. Also, his gf got wrecked.

(Interesting note: after he was beaten 2-0, the guy was very interested in splitting and became incredibly irate when we basically told him "too late")

So I won one round, went and got pizza, came back and talked trash to a guy while he was getting stomped out in front of his gf, then took my prize support and left.

That, gentlemen, is how you FNM.

I think that after M14 drops and the meta settles down I'm going to start grinding on modo in preparation for the GP at the end of the summer. Any tips for starting on modo / becoming a grinder?

Only play DEs. Don't multi-que unless you're playing two aggro decks.

Focus on increasing your winning percentage over time and understand that every game is essentially meaningless; what matters is improvement as a whole. This is a nice fall back mindset to have in difficult situations where you don't have a clean read in their hand or they hit a series if top decks etc - this happens more online because you're playing SO many games (frequency of occurrence is the same if course) and its helps to know that you made the best possible play or at least selected the line that have them the fewest outs etc.

Sorry if this is a noob question, but what do people mean by "go infinite"? Do DE line up with out timezones? Should you play in one a day or more / less?

I don't think it matters how many you play a day as long as you 3-1 at least one out of every three that you play. I think prize support is something like 6 (3-1) and 12 (4-0)? So roughly 20 and 45 tix per win? I believe dailies are only 6 tix per entry?

James probably knows better than I do.

'Go infinite' means you're able to never pay for cards/entry again. This means cashing in 1 in 3 DEs or better.

Mindsparker 1RR
3/2
First Strike. Whenever an opponent casts a blue or white spell, Mindsparker deals 2 damage to that player.

Seems better than Reckoner if the meta has a lot of control decks.

Just no quality burn at all though; so we'll be looking to Theros for a playable 4 drop (Battledriver needs the right enablers) and some instants and sorceries worth playing.

Alternatively, all in on Burn in the Stake combo for a few months (can't wait!)

There are a lot of easily breakable cards in M14, so I'm pretty excited personally. Young Pyromancer is such a unique card.

Mutavault, Shock, Chandra's Phoenix, Mindsparker, Young Pyromancer and Chandra, Pyromaster?

Red did pretty blood well for a core set, at least I think. We still have a lot of staples for RTR block to build from once Theros hits.

I think the only red-worthy cards are shock and phoenix. Maybe the U/W hater, but I don't think so. Young pyromancer requires a specific shell to play, and I'd rather be swinging with creatures.

Makes things easier anyway, since I already have shocks and phoenixes. I'll be ready for M14 without even needing to crack packs. :) EDIT: Oh yeah, and mutavaults. I got them too.

Also, pre-ordered a set of all the sliver cards from M14 for shits and giggles.

I might play CounterMayor for a little while. Having Spell Blast and Syncopate, as well as Essence Scatter/Dispel/Disperse in the format gives me a little hope for the deck. Plus I really like Delver of Secrets.

Some thoughts on quality cards in M14:

Demolish. Might be good since red aggressive strategies don't have a really solid 4drop post rotation unless Theros gives us something.
Trading Post. I always liked this card.
Young Pyromancer for obvious reasons.
Diabolic Tutor because why not?
Quicken because it can and should be a thing.
[card]
Silence[/card], too. That is also a thing.
Warden of Evos Isle, I'm not sure if this card is good or not but it's a limited bomb, probably better than most rares.
FUCKING BRAVE THE ELEMENTS.
I'm also glad to see [card]Altar's Reap[/card] in a core set. The card is very good and I'm excited to see it stick around.

Also anyone else notice how many Innistrad block cards found their way into the core set? That seems pretty shittastic, design wise. Means they got lazy.

Geez, I just watched the finals of GPKC. People on Reddit are shitting on the guy because he "prematurely conceded," but let's be honest...he was playing Living End and it was turn 4 and he had 2 mana and no Cascade card in hand. That looked pretty unwinnable with or without the Faerie Macabre.

Looks like I'm taking a break for the M13-M14 transition period cause I can't make a deck without spending too much. The red hate card is better than I expected (expected=crap). I kinda wish it was also hasted.

Here's to hoping Theros gives us good burn. Lightning Bolt+Shock standard would be nice.
