I remember how he claimed to have inside sources at Curse that fed him all of this information that turned out to be totally unfounded and false in every way.

just finished reading the GoT books so now I can act entitled and talk shit about Martin's sluggish pace of writing.
Now you can shit on the people who just watch the show like the rest of us book readers do.

I found this article who mentions the exact words "entitlement generation" and who mentions that some guys who were considered to be too troublesome and toxic got banned from the main GoT internet forum but went on to found their own site wherein they managed to cause even more mayhem. A solid read.

"Is Winter Coming?" is basically the DTR of the GoT series. Very amusing site to visit from time to time.

Due to the rise of the Entitlement Generation and the accessibility of the internet, people are more vocal than ever about their hobbies to the point where they feel a sense of ownership about said hobbies. Just read Wrestling Forum or Gamefaqs: fans believe they can create a better product than the writers / developers. I don't think there's anything wrong with this; after all, this type of behavior has been going on for centuries.

Henry Fielding felt that Samuel Richardson's "Pamela" (1740) was entirely unrealistic and disingenuous so he wrote "Shamela" (1741) as a rewrite where the protagonist is a gold-digger instead of an innocent girl who just happens to marry above her social class.

Once an artist produces a piece of work and releases it to the public, they shouldn't be surprised to face criticism over A) the work itself or B) their creative output. GRRM complains about being rushed when he's taken 14 years to publish two mediocre books. That's entirely on him: the moment his work output slowed due to disinterest and/or newfound fame, he opened himself up to the criticism of being lazy and unfocused. He seems to have taken the entrenched Rianalnn mentality where his actions (or inactions) are somehow being misinterpreted by a small group of vocal readers when, in reality, his actions (or inactions) have created that very same group of users.

tl;dr - The Entitlement Generation has many faults but their criticism of videogames / music / movies / art isn't what I'd classify as a fault (and it's not unique to this generation - they just seem louder now due to the Internet). More criticism leads to more discussion and more perspectives. Yes, many internet users produce nothing but chaff content but these people can be easily ignored.

Once you pay for something - such a game, book, movie - you've invested in it, both in terms of time and cash. You have a stake in the product being decent because of this investment. That's why people complain over bad DLCs after they've bought a game's season pass: the product is inferior to what they expected to get. This is identical to getting a subpar meal at an expensive restaurant.

GRRM doesn't seem to understand that people have invested years into his books and characters, so by taking forever to produce new content, he's essentially biting the hand that has fed him (quite well!) for many years. Basically he's "spurning" his fanbase while accusing them of being the bad guys.

Now being unable to handle criticism while giving tons of criticism of their own is what I'd consider a fault of the Entitlement Generation.
