Tarns are indeed going that high. Thankfully, Wooded Foothills and Bloodstained Mire are Legacy legal and less than half that price. Those foreign bridges are worth a good bit.

That is going rather deep, giving up some staying power to have a possible advantage in game 1. It is true that Brainstorm will be everywhere at the invitational but I don't think that is a direction we want to go. How many decks would you really plan to bring it in against anyway? Half of the Brainstorm decks don't require a Pyroblast-style response.

I got the chance to play some legacy recently, and I'm really digging skullcrack over flame rift.
I think smash to smithereens / shattering spree might be necessary in the board though.

Why do you like skullcrack

by Khaospawn
Why deal 3 damage when you can deal four? And it's not targeted!
Posted: Tue Mar 25, 2014 2:30 am
by Lightning_Dolt
Because Skullcrack hits for 7 if your opponent has their stupid fucking batterskull.

Batterskull gets owned by Smash to Smithereen. Sulfuric Vortex is also good verse it.

by Khaospawn
How is your opponent even alive to cast Batterskull. much less attack with it?
Posted: Tue Mar 25, 2014 1:28 pm
by BlakLanner
Sometimes they get to cheat it in. He shouldn't live long enough to do much with it.

Every time I see a Stoneforge Mystic, I hear "SHOOT HER!" in my head.

I only kill her on sight if I have a Searing Blood or I don't have a Smash on hand to take out what it brings in.

Suppose you see plains mother of runes, do you kill that on sight

I certainly give it a lot of thought. That card can shut down the rest of our removal.

So I am for sure running:
SB
4 Ensnaring Bridge
4 Pyroblast

We are red, not white. We fry her.

Aether Vial > stoneforge mystic > batter skull. Batterskull was out on T4 (he was on the play, I was on mull to 6).
Games don't always end quickly. With 20 -21 land, floods happen frequently.
Sword of Fire and Ice raped me in one game too. I think smash to smithereens is probably a good call, but I still want something to replace flame rift with.

by Mcdonalds
There are lots of cards you could replace them with
Just all of them are awful and only sometimes better than flamerift (afaik)

Creatures? Then you turn on swords/decay/terminus more so
Other spells? Other than 3 for 2(a la skull crack), there isn't anything your not already playing, and if there was, you'd probably be playing it already.

List appeals to me, but seems odd. Budget?
Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 4:04 am
by BlakLanner
Looks like a bit of one which is odd since the two precon decks give you 95% of what you need. I don't think Magma Jet has any place in a Legacy deck. The rest is reasonable but I would take Flame Rift over Skullcrack and find room for Sulfuric Vortex somewhere in the 75. The Pyroclasms feel a little off as well since he has Pyrostatic Pillar already.

They do different things though.
Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 1:46 pm
by BlakLanner
While they do technically, the purpose of both is to punish opponents for playing cheap spells. One does it before the creatures hit the board, one after. Elves is the only deck where I could see both being particularly useful and I don't think we have the sideboard space to run both.

by Lightning_Dolt
I think pillar is probably just better, no?
Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 3:30 pm
by Purp
I prefer pyroclasm vs elves. That matchup is such a race that typically it comes down to you being very low life, and pillar will just kill you.
Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 3:35 pm
by BlakLanner
That is reasonable. I am experimenting with Pillar right now since I didn't have it in my 75. I just brought in Searing Blood and Ensnaring Bridge.

I don't play enough legacy to be good at it. Can you guys help me not suck? Can we assemble a stock 75 + sb guide for the primer? I'll help anyway I can, but I admit I'm a legacy scrub and don't know what I'm doing.
Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 3:57 pm
by BlakLanner
There is a stock 75 on the first post for fetchless as well as a few ideas for sideboarding. I know there are a few posts in the thread for versions that run fetches and Lavamancer.
Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 4:06 pm
by Lightning_Dolt
Do we have a forum approved 75 though? Maybe come up with one with fetches, one without? I have fetches and use them.
Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 4:33 pm
by BlakLanner
Legacy decks are often a bit of trial and error to match your local metagame. It is much more difficult to get a "forum approved" version of the deck because of that. Purp's 75 in post 4 is a good start for a "fetchful" deck. I would move to 9 fetches/10 mountains. I also have a list in post 21 tuned to my preferences. Most of our decks will be within a few cards of each other since at least 30 of the spells are must-haves.

You only have 59 cards. I am not sure about the main deck bridge but if you think you need it for where you are going, I can't say that I don't understand. You are taking a risk with not having any graveyard hate though. I don't know how popular dredge will be at the invi but it is a rough fight without backup.
Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 6:37 pm
by Purp
I could -1 Bridge, +2 Searing blaze.
Would I want Faerie Macabre or Surgical Extraction?
Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 6:56 pm
by BlakLanner
Either would work. Macabre doesn't cost life and hits 2 cards but can only hit what is there. Extraction costs 2 life (irrelevant in a dredge fight normally) and only hits one card but it rips it from their deck.

What deck do you want yard hate for?
Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2014 7:53 pm
by Mcdonalds
Oh dredge, surgical is better, hitting one of their key cards is huge, eating two cards usually isn't enough especially if they get a strong start
That said dredge is largely a budget deck (excluding led dredge), I doubt a anyone would take it to an invitational
