So, any speculation on sweepers to deal with the hexproof plant? Or are we looking at combat tricks to kill the wretched things?

That thing is going to make life miserable for a while.
Well Reckoner, Pyromancer, and Phoenix don't bat an eyelid. Think about it as a Farseek that gets to block once or twice. It obviously has more impact than that, but that is a reasonable simplification until we actually start testing. Any sweeper you play is going to kill your guys as well. Go over it or around it.

(And if they bestow it with something, you're probably winning anyway XD )

I plan on killing it with an overloaded mortars, along with everything else they have in play.

It's a bad card, but Glaring Spotlight is an effective way of dealing with the drooly hexproof strategies. I'd rather include 1-2 "bad" cards in the sideboard that make a nightmare matchup winnable than try to shoehorn in sub-par burn/sweepers that hurt me in other matchups.

I mean, I guess red Plague Wind for 6 is good.... :P

Good point, though Mortars will probably still be in the side, yea?

Good call Ham; if Hexproof becomes a big thing that's a fine answer.

"Normal" red sweeps in recent sets have been 2 damage across the board...doesn't kill it unless you're casting it after combat. Same thing with Electrickery...If they put it in front of Zealot you can sting it afterwards. I would not hold my breath for a >2 red sweep with Bonfire just now leaving the format, regrettably...for all we will be cheering the exit of Swagtusk, others will throw
parties for Bonfire's passing.
Not unless we get something like Slagstorm. :D
It would fit thematically with Purphoros.

Dear god reprint Slagstorm.

WOULD PLAY.

Strictly better than Cancel, amirite?

EDIT: somehow a page happened while I wasn't looking.

"Oh darn my Reckoner dies...but I'm killing a hoard of your dudes? Oh, and let's take out that x/6 as well. Or Bolt you, whatevs."

Mein Goht that would be great.

Tormented Hero B
Creature - Human Warrior (U)
Tormented Hero enters the battlefield tapped.
Heroic - Whenever you cast a spell that targets Tormented Hero, each opponent loses 1 life. You gain life equal to the life lost this way.
2/1

Well that ain't half bad.

Posted: Tue Sep 10, 2013 5:11 am
by windstrider
Slagstorm even fits the name and number crunch.
I doubt it will happen, but it would be a thing of beauty.

Flamebreak also fits.

Looks like Diregraf Ghoul successfully came back from the dead.

Is there art for that? Sounds nifty flavorwise.

True, my friend...completely forgot Slagstorm while thinking of Whipflare. Oh that would just be too wonderful...

I'm liking Whip of Erebos...that's what black needed to stay alive against aggro. I will be brewing on the dark side...most likely Orzhov.

Fanatic of Mogis 3R
Creature - Minotaur Shaman (U)
When Fanatic of Mogis enters the battlefield, it deals damage to each opponent equal to your devotion to red.
4/2

Oh, that's fun. That could easily be six or more damage when it comes down.

That's a pretty good card.

Very interesting. Minotaur tribal hmmmmm.

I was looking at it as well, but damn there goes the 4-slot again. Still, Minotaurs do seem to carry significant devotion if you curve out...

Yeah, not sure what you do early, maybe you're all 3-5 drop value creatures plus cheap burn?

I guess that was tried last season and it stunk though.

Fanatic of Mogis is an interesting card. Could be a decent curve topper in RDW. Also Interacts favorably with Legion's Initiative.

[deck]
Creatures
4 Rakdos Cackler
3 Foundry Street Denizen
4 Ash Zealot
4 Rageblood Shaman
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Fanatic of Mogis
1 Purphoros, God of the Forge

Other Spells
2 Legion's Initiative
4 Magma Jet
4 Lightning Strike
2 Boros Charm
1 Hammer of Purphoros

23 Land
[/deck]

I don't love Denizen, but he's devotion on the board. Perhaps he should be Loyalist, though he's not a generally a T1 play.

Everyone is worrying about the plant too much. It dies to electrickery.

Cackler/Zealot swing + Electrickery.
As someone who played the shit out of Wall of Omens I really need to tell you that's bigger deal than you expect it to be.
You loose tempo and additional card just to deal with it. In case of not having a card or not having a creature - you loose even more tempo.

I think I'd play that minotaur over the 4CC god. I might be wrong though.

In other news, I went 8-2 in modern using B/G midrange. Sick deck is sick, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a modern deck to play for high stakes.

No-gimmick aggro red.

It's clean, cookie-cutter and nice. Still, I'd take Legion Loyalist over Foundry Street Denizen all day.

^^Oh yes, and it's budget-friendly as well. Got my seal of approval.

Must say I like that Fanatic of Mogis, and a minotaur deck with Rageblood Shaman and Reckoner is starting to look really interesting.

Is this SB for Gruul Aggro even viable:

Sideboard:
4 Savage Summoning
4 Mizzium Mortars
4 Flames of the Firebrand
3 Destructive Revelry

I already do have 2 Hammers maindeck.

Wow...blue is seeing something that they haven't had for a while: A meaningful 1CMC counter.

Swan's Song :symu:
Instant (R)

Counter target enchantment, instant, or sorcery spell.
Its controller puts a Bird Token 2/2 with flying onto the
battlefield under his control.

So...A 1-drop answer to both the gods and their weapons, and that renders Bestow useless.

Remember what you did with your ex wife?

You need to do that with your car.
