MTGS will eventually be fully moved over to something like that (with improvements since this is just a test), officially in the Curse network and officially blocked by my work filter.

Actually not, Eggman's design was one's of the various desings they did for a competition inside SEGA for a new mascot. While it didn't won, the guys liked it so much that they wanted to use it in some way for the new game.Back when there was an actual rivalry between Nintendo and Sega, I always thought that Dr. Robotnik was supposed to be a caricature of Mario... same style of mustache, same red shirt, same pot belly, all taken to extremes.
Although never confirmed, it is speculated that Dr. Eggman's name was inspired by The Beatles' classic tune "I am the Walrus." The song featuring the lyrics "I am
the egg man/They are the egg men/I am the Walrus/Goo goo g'joob." Also, Eggman's theme in the later games ("E.G.G.M.A.N") makes references to I Am the Walrus, especially the line "I am the Eggman. It's what I am". It is also because of this possible connection that Sega of America may have wanted to change Dr. Eggman's name, in the fear of being sued by The Beatles' label Apple for copyright infringement.
