They're crucial against decks like Tron and Scapeshift. They're almost always 4 damage before turn 5 because they just can't afford to let you create a presence.

And I have been battling a LOT of Scapeshift and Tron, lol.

They're not bad against other decks. Sometimes they live and just crash into Spellskites, Restoration Angels, and Wall of Roots/Omens. You can side them out against certain decks, like ScOoze decks.

I want your guys' thoughts on Vulshok Refugee. Mirror tech over Dragon's Claw?
Or Akki Lavarunner for some real trollolloll...

Edit: Forget that, card is crap. Didn't see first that it helps the opponent as well.

I went 3-1 in another DE today, losing to U/W Control in Round 4. After beating him easily Game 1, he opens Game 2 with a Leyline and I fail to fight through that. We had a very close Game 3. He was at 5 and I was holding a Flames of the Blood Hand and a Skullcrack with only 4 Mountains. He cast Leyline so I hit him with the Flames to bring him to 1. He follows up with a Baneslayer Angel and has the Spell Snare to use on my Skullcrack that I tried to use on myself to stop the life gain. After that, I saw the writing on the wall...

Nice Work  record your games already :argh:

I'm also giving up on RDW for online, burn just does the job better when ScOoze are in the format.

Thanks. ^_^ My laptop is pretty primitive, but I have 2 more days of this mini-vacation left so I'll see what I can do tomorrow about attempting to record.

All this practice/testing/grinding is going to pay off, hopefully: I'm going to a PTQ next Saturday. I've spent the last 24 hours hardcore grinding and I
have 48 more to go.

As for RDW, yeah, your assessment is spot-on: ScOoze is just not nice to the deck. I decided last night once and for all to go full steam ahead with Burn for MTGO and the upcoming PTQ. Now that I know without a doubt what I'm going to play, the games have been easier. Less stress, I guess.

I got my 3-1 in the DE I actually lost my 3rd game because for some reason even though I was seated #1 based on my breakers they decide to pair me down against Ad nauseam

Grated I had the 2nd match in the bag but I forgot that Angel's Grace was a split second spell (which costed me the game).

I beat: GR Tron (aka GP Fail), Junk and UB Fae - the vids will be out next week.

I think I'm having a bad day. I've lost 4 matches today and only won 1. Terrible openers, worse mulligans, and NUMEROUS games where I've lost simply because I flooded out.

Mono U Tron - Loss 0-2
Merfolk - Win 2-0
Junk - Loss 1-2 (Got him to 1, flooded out, died with 10 lands on table)
Affinity - Loss 1-2
Scapeshift - Loss 0-2 (Flooded heavy both games 9+ lands)

I need to take a break until the 7 pm DE. :suicide:

Went 3-1 on another DE.

[deck]
Creatures 12
4 Goblin Guide
4 Vexing Devil
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel

Burn 28
2 Forked Bolt
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Rift Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Searing Blaze

2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Pyrite Spellbomb
2 Searing Blood
3 Smash to Smithereens
[/deck]

I took out the Peak Eruptions for Fallout and I'm loving it.

R1: U/W Control - [b:bqlss0vc]Loss[/b:bqlss0vc] (Rastafoo) 1-2 (Rastafoo is a friend of mine IRL- a very good player. I beat him Game 2 with the Fallout and flooded in Game 3 to lose. :frown: )

R2: R/b Burn - [b:bqlss0vc]Win[/b:bqlss0vc] 2-1 (He damaged himself a lot trying to kill me.)

R3: B/W Tokens - [b:bqlss0vc]Win[/
b:bqlss0vc] 2-0 (Best play of the night: I have a land and 2 Lightning Bolts in hand with a Goblin Guide on the board and I'm tapped out. Dude plays a Tidehollow Sculler and takes a Bolt. I untap, draw a Searing Blaze, play my land and Blaze the Sculler. I get my Bolt back, double Bolt him and swing FTW with my Guide. He was not pleased.)

R4: Mono Red Burn - [b:bqlss0vc]Win[/b:bqlss0vc] 2-1 (Slagel79) (This guy is good. I would almost call this a true mirror since he is also on Vexing Devils, but he was also playing Shard Volley. Whatever the case may be, I only won thanks to Dragon's Claw. I had one in my opener for Game 2 while on the play, which made that game a cakewalk. In Game 3, I was near death and managed to topdeck one. Clawing my way back (get it!?) was no easy feat - I messed up big by not boarding out my Eidolons while on the draw. Still, I'm very happy with the way I managed to stay alive, even though I'll admit I was a little lucky.)

2 Volcanic Fallout
2 Dragon's Claw
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Pyrite Spellbomb
2 Searing Blood
3 Smash to Smithereens

I cut the land destruction after I had some bad games in a DE. My first match was U-Tron and I was feeling naked without the Molten Rains, but I was able to get there without them.

R1: U-Tron (shoktroopa) Win 2-1

R2: Mono Red Burn (Bualvor) Win 2-1 (To prove that it's not always about who lands the Claw first, I never saw mine and he had 1 on Turn 2 for Games 2 and 3.)

R3: Junk (YYsapporo) Win[

How much worse does this deck become if i were to cut the fetches? I've been wanting to move from standard into modern for some time, but getting the 4 fetches is too much of an "up front" investment for me at the moment. So, is this decks still serviceable without the fetches or are they an absolute must have?

Posted: Wed Aug 20, 2014 10:37 am
by Platypus
Khaospawn will probably comment on it, but I'd say that in this particular build going fetchless has a lower impact than in a build with Grim Lavamancers. You lose some flexibility with the Searing Blazes, but that's about it. Deck thinning with only four fetches is minimal.

Posted: Wed Aug 20, 2014 11:04 am

Should i keep the Blazes even with no fetches or should i switch to Searing Blood?

I'd keep the Blazes.

20 mountains with Blazes will still work. You may not want the full set, but they're still powerful.

If you want a bit of an ego boost, shoktroopa has been playing blue tron for years, and is pretty much the only guy who did a lot of innovation/development with the deck to shape the list into what most players run now.

We chatted a bit in Game 1 before he Mindslavered me and double Searing Blazed my Goblin Guide before Lava Spiking me to death. I also learned that he can't cast my suspended Rift Bolt during my turn that he controlled. Interesting.

After that, I got my game face on and went to war. :D He seemed like a cool dude.

Well, guys, I'm almost done with my week of testing and I believe I'm almost where I want to be in paper. I keep bouncing back and forth between LD and the Black splash for Bump and Charm, but I believe that my list is beginning to take shape into this form:

[deck]
Creatures 13
4 Goblin Guide
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Vexing Devil
1 Grim Lavamancer

Sorcery 10
2 Forked Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt

Instant 18
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Searing Blaze
4 Skullcrack
4 Flames of the Blood Hand
2 Volcanic Fallout

Land 19
4 Arid Mesa
4 Scalding Tarn
9 Mountain
2 Stomping Ground

Sideboard 15
3 Destructive Revelry
2 Pyrite Spellbomb
2 Searing Blood
2 Guerrilla Tactics
2 Dragon's Claw
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Molten Rain
[/deck]

I know, I know. It looks weird. But it feels right.

This would be my other option simply due to the amount of
time I've spent playing it this week:
The LD Version
[deck]
Creatures 13
4 Goblin Guide
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Vexing Devil
1 Grim Lavamancer

Burn 28
2 Forked Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Searing Blaze
4 Skullcrack
2 Flames of the Blood Hand
4 Molten Rain

Land 19
4 Arid Mesa
4 Scalding Tarn
9 Mountain
2 Stomping Ground

Sideboard 15
3 Destructive Revelry
2 Pyrite Spellbomb
2 Searing Blood
2 Guerrilla Tactics
2 Dragon's Claw
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Volcanic Fallout
[/deck]

The Grim Lavamancer is kind of a freebie. I played a bunch of games today in paper and I felt that I saw a lot more land than I really needed, so I swapped a Mountain out. Just a feel thing at the moment. He may go back to being a Mountain. I really just want to draw a bunch of immediate damage spells.
