In a pinch, Khaos' beard can help turn this around.

So yesterday I popped into my LGS and bought:
4 Render Silent
3 Notion Thief
4 Plasm Capture
3 Tajic, Blade of the Legion
1 THE BARON
2 Master of Cruelties
4 Skylasher
2 Gaze of Granite
2 Voice of Resurgence
2 Advent of the Wurm
4 Sire of Insanity, 1 foil Sire of Insanity
3 Pyrewild Shaman
1 Council of the Absolute
2 Exava Blood Witch
3 Lavinia of the Tenth
3 Beck//Call
3 Blood Scrivener
1 Aetherling
3 Ruric Thar
1 Teysa (for collection)
A full playset of all the good commons and uncommons.
Would have gladly bought a playset of each rare, if not for the shop's lack of stock (I mean, it's only just been pre-release).
DGM standard, here I come!

I love me some Heartless Summoning.Anyone interested in brewing a semi-competitive Heartless Summoning list? The obvious target that comes to mind is Sire of Insanity, but there have to be others, especially in a BUr shell with Havengul Lich.
Right now, I'm not so much interested in winning as having fun again.

I do it all the time on a new set, buying a playset of all the possibly good cards instead of waiting for trades and booster-opening. I think I spent an insane amount with new phyrexia and rtr. DGM is probably the least I've spent, second only to gatecrash (reckoners were 6ea at the start).I fear you blew your load on the ugly stripper, Sasky.

Y'know what they say, blow your load everywhere, even on the ugly ones for some of them might be the sweet ones in disguise.

Nice philosophy, Sasky.

So, I've definitely decided on Jhoira of the Ghitu as my first EDH deck commander. Free It That Betrays sounds nice to me. And I have her already. Anybody have experience playing with her as commander?
Also, just snagged a Japanese Jace Beleren off Ebay for 7.00USD. Good stuff.

Might go to FNM this week with:
[deck]
4 Ash Zealot
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Firefist Striker
4 Hellrider
4 Lightning Mauler
4 Pyreheart Wolf
4 Rakdos Cackler
2 Stonewright
4 Stromkirk Noble
4 Searing Spear
21 Mountain
1 Hellion Crucible[/deck]
Being me, I want that 23 land very badly...I just like to hit my land drops and grind out games with mana-sinks! Astute readers will know I really enjoyed the 24 land versions of Mono Red last season, even when everyone else was running 22
Probably some number of Threatens, some Pillars, Mortars and maybe Frostburn Weird in the board. Probably need to ask around and see what has been popular at the LGS.

I've been running this list with success in my LGS lately.
[deck]Creatures (32)
4 Arbor Elf
4 Gyre Sage
4 Flinthoof Boar
4 Strangleroot Geist
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
2 Borderland Ranger
4 Ghor-Clan Rampager
3 Thundermaw Hellkite
3 Wolfir Silverheart
Spells (7)
3 Mizzium Mortars
4 Domri Rade
Lands (21)
4 Stomping Ground
4 Rootbound Crag
5 Mountain
8 Forest
Sideboard
3 Pillar of Flame
3 Ground Seal
1 Gruul Charm
2 Act of Treason
2 Triumph of Ferocity
2 Garruk Relentless
2 Zealous Conscripts
[/deck]
This is Kibler's list IIRC. I was skeptical of running six 5-drops with 21 land at first but the deck is amazingly consistent and have no problems playing 5 drops.
I'd want to fit Zhur-Tha Druid in there somewhere, but Gyre Sage is just too valuable to replace. I also can't replace Borderland Ranger because most of the time I'm fetching mountains from him.

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes!
Today has been okay for a working birthday. I got up this evening to see my son before he took off for evening school activities, and my daughter and I pulled together a yummy repast of grilled ribeye, baked potatoes and salad. She had baked cupcakes for me the night before, using a gluten-free recipe in deference to my son. The recipe used coconut flower and oil, so the cupcakes turned out tasting like Almond Joy after she added chocolate frosting. She couldn't find any birthday candles, so after dinner she comes over with a cupcake topped by a tea light candle...too funny. It was a nice evening.
@Helios - Sorry to here the bugs have invaded, man...here's hoping it's just a 24-hour blitz and that you feel more human tomorrow.
@Fate - That sucks...I am no fan of employment practices since the social media/networking boom. Sheesh, most people look like delinquents if you put
them under a microscope and look at things out of context. Next thing you know they will be denying jobs based on Internet browsing habits...Big Brother is alive and well and living in the HR departments of the world.
@ windstrider - You know I'm down with the Heartless...I think we need to see about organizing a "non-Tier 1" tournament/league to give people an opportunity to play all the cool cards that just can't quite carry the day in Standard. There are too many fun decks that just aren't viable against a room full of ramp-into-giants-and-utterly-disgusting-lifegain.dec lists. Something like Sioux organized...obviously it can be done.
@Kaze - Are you looking for someone to do alters for you or to learn from? Are you interested in overlays/Photoshop or hand-painted?
@zeman - I would not want to be the poor, unsuspecting casual player who sits down at FNM across from you with that list...I can feel the heat coming off of some blazing starts, and good luck to anyone who thinks they
can play defense against that.
Congrats to all on promos and PR-related fun!

Its not an employment practice, I think that got lost in translation somewhere Photo. Happy birthday btw.
I wouldn't work for a company that would make me go through those hoops.
Its a State Board, aka a government licensing agency.
And there's nothing Red mages like me hate more than red fuckign tape
and not having a choice about to go cut through it

Both, I suppose. I may look into commissioning the services of someone soon. And though I have literally no artistic ability whatsoever - physically or digitally - It'd be nice to know how and where to start. And hand-painted alters have always caught my eye.@Kaze - Are you looking for someone to do alters for you or to learn from? Are you interested in overlays/Photoshop or hand-painted?
Glad to hear you had a pleasant birthday.

@Fate - Gotcha. I know the drill, then--state licensure and Federal employment here. But again, I did my thing in that regard 15 years ago, and things are much, much more stringent anymore with things that have happened in the world. State boards tend to be very punitive-minded--they are there to protect the public from us. That being said, I don't think you can be denied licensure just for speeding tickets, even if you failed to list them. People forget stuff, and even state employees with delusions of grandeur have some limits to what they can do (as outlined in the state manual for the given profession).
@Kaze - Go to ebay and search "mtg altered art" and "magic altered art" if you haven't already. There are some cool folks there that do some awesome work--I don't have access right now, but tomorrow I'll point at a couple of people I have experience with there. There's one guy I really like--
another James--who does overlay-style alters and who I've dealt with numerous times. His screen name is something to do with "flying monkeys" but I can't remember it exactly off the top of my head. There's also a gal who's screen presence is "Kitty" something or other or something similarly feline; she does hand-paints that are decent.
I will also keep an eye out at Spectrum Live next month; 60+ fantasy artists and I already know that a number of other companies and more local/lesser name artists will also be there. I will be surprised if there's not an alterer or two...

I'd like to ask for the clan's advice. I've barely played since GTC's release. I've been understandably quite distracted by my dick, the gym, changing life circumstances and photodyer's coffee.
I really enjoy the Dos Rakis / RakHammer style of deck, and I'm currently weighing adding a third color to it for some resiliency. I could go Dega (+W) or Jund (+G) with a minimal splash for some slightly better creatures (Flinthoof Boar, Gyre Sage) and utility spells (Oblivion Ring, Boros Charm).
Given that I've gotten quite good at playing with the old Dos Rakis style (and my beloved transformational sideboard), which 3rd color would give me the most value? I'm leaning towards Jund but I'd love to hear more from the standard players here who have kept up with the shifting metagame.

I would lean Jund as well at the moment; it is more aggressive and if you're playing a bigger creature deck then I don't think going white gives you much beyond Reckoner, who isn't that good at the moment (if only because everyone is gearing up to beat him). Green also gives you KWR and Borderland Ranger, which are very nice; Borderland actually gives you good mana (not insignificant in a 3 colour aggro deck that wants to hit 5 mana EVERY game).
@ Alex - yeah. I fired back some questions regarding what sort of conduct from you or I would be acceptable; as long as I can continue to be the beligerent jerk that everyone seems to begrudgingly accept, I am not opposed to it ~ diestoremoval seems very content to allow us to self-regulate, so I think the policy implementation would just be a continuance of that. I certainly don't think that they will want to become like MTGS.

Sweet. I wasn't sure if you didn't get it, or if you just didn't respond to all. (There's a button towards the bottom that lets you do that, by the way.) Just wanted to make sure you at least read it. I think I did a pretty decent job of representing what we were about.

@ham - Having run at both variants, I'd also say Jund. I would also suggest that you give Ceddy P's list a run (with Hounds added to the SB maybe)...it has the Aristocrat and Tmaw tricks we like but as Z said better mana and such, BTE acceleration, ramp and so on. I love playing Dega, but it is really no more competitive in the meta because you are struggling between keeping mana up for Charm and trying to tap out for aggro. I love the tools that Dega provides, but it regrettably fares no better against this big midrange meta than Dos Rakis. White works better in something like Alex's list that is abusing Charm and Resto.
