The best thing about a 99 Mountain Ashling deck is every hand is a nut draw.
That's a cool way to look at it.

What is a "mulligan" anyway?

A mulligan is when I drunkenly stumble into somebody's bed and realize it's not mine. I either stay there or have to get up and find another place to stay.

Maybe if you're getting your deck out of the bonnet of your Smart Car to play EDH at Tea Time.

Here in 'Murica, though, we only play with God's lands.
Scrubs gonna scrub
You're the burn master.
You just mad cause you don't got that real pimp swag

I'm mad because you only carry the McRib for a limited time every year, asshole.

Can't just go around and break out the McRib everyday

Went to jail last time I did that.

Noob question, but how does the 99 mountain deck work? Isn't ashling's damage limited to 3 each turn since it auto resolves after the third pump?

Posted: Thu Oct 31, 2013 5:52 pm
by Stardust
That's why you only activate the ability twice in one turn.

Turn 2: Play Ashling
Turn 3: Attack with 2/2 Ashling
Turn 4: Attack with 4/4 Ashling
Turn 5: Attack with 6/6 Ashling
Turn 6: Attack with 8/8 Ashling... then pump her once more and explode!!!

Repeat as necessary.

I literally have a section in the primer entitled "how does a 99-mountain deck work?"
But yeah, Stardust explained it pretty well. You can only deal three if you try to do it all in one turn, but the counters (or potential energy, as I like to think of them) accumulate over multiple turns.

If you are able, try to hold up 6 mana until the person to your right's end step.

The last time I played Ashling, I was done for. 4 life remaining with four other players still in the game all between 20 and 40 life. Gaddock Teeg in play made half my hand dead and my other spells kept getting countered since the blue player feared this deck like no other. Frustrated, I told the table that I would just play Ashling and not even bother attacking, just pump her up until she was 40/40, then explode for the draw. Luckily, Gaddock Teeg was a huge threat. If Teeg attacked me, I would explode, making her lose her advantage (while I kill myself in the process). If anyone else attacked me, I wouldn't explode, and they would be overrun by Teeg's army. So they left me alone. Teeg took out one player, then another, leaving just me and one other player. At this point Ashling was 18/18, Teeg was at 30 and Vorel (the other player) was at 20. Knowing what was coming, Vorel decided a draw was acceptable and attacked Teeg
with everything, hitting her for 10, allowing me to explode for 20 and draw the game on my turn. So I played Glacial Chasm and just won instead.

I'm in :D I got my Ashling and my 99 mountains on MTGO :)

My first ten cards are going to be Scythe Of The Wretched, Earthquake, Darksteel Plate, Devil's Play, Red Sun's Zenith, Sol Ring, Gauntlet Of Power, Gauntlet of Might, Caged Sun and Valakut :)

Fault line > earthquake.
The three lifeline equipment ( loxodon warhammer, batterskull and Basilisk Collar) are also sweet with Ashling, since you can gain dozens of life (sometimes even a hundred) from every explosion.

I lost my first game as T1 Pithing Needle naming Ashling is difficult to beat :)

Shattering Spree can raise some hell in a deck this mana heavy. Pithing Needle go boom, as does the Sol Rings everyone runs as a staple, Library of Leng, Sensi's Divining Top if you can catch them tapped out, Birthing Pod, Curio, the Gauntlets, Scroll Rack, the Swords, Caged Sun, all the artifacts that make commanders hexproof/shrouded... there's a long list of EDH artifact staples.

The only upside of Shattering Spree is that you can play politics with it. If there's an artifact that's helping you out or hurting your opponents more than you, you have a choice on whether or not to blow it up.

Does anyone have an extra Scythe of the Wretched, Caged Sun or Gauntlet of Power that they'd be willing to trade? They're the three on my wishlist that I feel would be the most useful. I've been looking for them for a while now, and nobody near me has them.

I'm partial to New Phyrexia mountains. I like the evil look of them.

Spree is also more difficult to counter. Vandalblast is only on the stack once, but if there's one key artifact you need dead, Spree can target it multiple times if you really fear a counterspell or other trickery.

I picked up an Ashling a few weeks ago. I've got the 99 Mountain version put together, just need some sleeves to throw it in. I was contemplating playing it tomorrow since I haven't seen anyone play Pithing Needle in our group.

Wow. I feel stupid not thinking of this build. Although, gain control of target creature card after you are tapped out seems rather scary. At my meta, gain control of cards are a big part of the game. Might want to think about that. Also, no burning wish?

I'll put it on my wishlist. See, with this deck, I made a rule that I couldn't just go on TCGPlayer and order all the cards I wanted; that I had to search around a bit to get the deck together. Because of this, I am still missing a lot of key cards (most notably the mana doublers). My current list doesn't even have Snow-Covered Mountains, because I only have 55 of them, and only around 30 non-mountain cards that I want in there.

by DarthStabber
Why snow-covered mountains in everything? If you were using skred or something else that cared it would make sense. I'm using rimescale dragon in nekusar and the only adjustment I made was to switch the basics (all 12 of them) to snow and it's been more than sufficient. Unless you are using skred you don't need all snow lands.

Pretty much every other Mountain deck has non-snow mountains, so they couldn't benefit from my Extraplanar Lens if I used snow mountains.

Totally won a league game the other day after someone foolishly cast mycosynth lattice while I was holding vandalblast, about 14 turns into the game.

Never play Lattice unless you already have Darksteel Forge in play.

I think I want to add some cheap, instant speed removal to my Ashling deck. Something to easily get rid of Gaddock Teeg, Crypt Ghast, that sort of thing. Let's say I want 2 spells. Magma Jet and Punishing Fire? Are there any other good ones out there?

[card]Dead/Gone[/card]? Sudden Shock? Has anyone tried these cards?

Lightning Bolt?

Posted: Fri Jan 24, 2014 3:04 pm
by Stardust
Bolt is good, but I think I'll do better by getting more utility instead of more mana-to-damage ratio.

Also, nothing in EDH has 3 toughness. The little dinks I'll be shooting for all have 2. Any other annoying guys seem to have 4.

Burst Lightning is nice, since it can hit for 4 and still gets around Teeg
