I think that Pack rat is our biggest issue here
I'm not entirely sure I understand why. Mono black packs very little Artifact removal (Ratchet bomb maybe?) and Pithing Needle shuts down Pack Rats/Mutavaults right quick.

@Purp, has your mate found away to answer Esper and/or Bx control? I don't think Rage Tears is playable in DE maybe SE or 2-Man or FNM.

@dpaine88, I hate fighting the deck as well but its so much fun to play, esp. online since people can be so kind when they're behind a computer screen :D.

haha it does seem fun to play, must just rape MBC. Seems really good in general, just loses to itself ?

I just pray that this deck doesn't become a thing, it seems frustrating as all heck.

I can't believe I'm gonna say it, but thank god for esper and u/w for packing boardwipes...

This deck sucks to play against but it is very beatable. Especially when your opponents keep 1 creature hands. Or they don't get them and mull down to 4-5 and still only get 1.

Could this indeed be worth revisiting for early BoG with BlackDevo substituting Devour Flesh with Bile Blight?
We at least gain the GW temple...

BlackDevo player comes in and tells you that he feels like that the removal package with 4 Devour Flesh, 4 Hero's Downfall and 2 Pharika's Cure will probably become 4 Hero's Downfall, 3 Devour Flesh and 3 Bile Blight at best.
At least in the beginning of the season.

This deck is beyond fun, esp. now with the low Devour Flesh count (completely stomped over BW control) and with Ajani, Caller of the Pride Esper and UW's Dsphere don't feel anywhere near as brutal (sers. might up the Ajani count since he was boss whenever I drew him).

What role does Chained to the Rocks play in this deck? You aren't casting it early (or at all?) with 8 Mountains right?

Posted: Tue Mar 11, 2014 3:03 pm
by magicdownunder
The 9 "scry" lands is much more powerful then it looks in this brew :) so hitting those Mountains exactly when you need them seems to happen often enough.

Anyone else testing this brew? If so what are the thoughts on upping Ajani or does Revoke Existence just work better?

p.s. won another SE event, it was brutal... (I paired with burn R3 ).

Woot!! Got another 3-0 beating Rw Burn, BW Control and Esper Control.

I think I'm almost comfortable enough to make my own tweak to Br4nc4 list (just the SB, I want to find room to toss in more creatures) but I need to tank on it a little to map out the full SB plan so I can pick the right cards to cut.

I would love any input in that regard.

Nice videos. My buddy and I run a G/W hexproof deck, it's a bit different (probably a touch weaker but has better mana), but it can probably help with this.

The biggest problem we've had is that it can sometimes be hard for the deck to close out games. Ajani really helps with that and a 3 of in creature match ups could be nuts. We've had success with Holy Mantle as well, but my instinct tells me that Ajani is better. Giving double strike and flying to Voltron when he busts out the blazing sword is nuts. We've also tried some number of Holy Mantle to push through damage against creature based decks. It's effective but lack explosiveness.

Against control we've had the most success by dropping the voltron strategy and becoming a flash aggro deck. Advent of the Wurm is a 2 or 3 of for those decks.

What match up does Mending Touch come in for?

Game 2 of this reminds me of a match I had two weekends ago with Br aggro... Total landflood nightmare. Scrying away lands like crazy with temples and magma jet and STILL drawing more lands

I like this deck a lot, just wish Voice wasn't so dang expensive or there was a suitable Hexproof replacement for that card. I had a modern bogles deck that I loved playing

Could you post your "better" manabase? Or do you mean its better simply because its 2 colors rather then 3?

Mending Touch is for Control (sweepers) just like Boros Charm (except I seem to use the double strike mode mode often in these videos).

Looking back a these videos, I seem to get flooded like hell even though I only run 22 lands (9 of which "scry") I'm def. going to toss another creature(s) in the SB, maybe Mistcutter Hydra.

I haven't really followed this deck, just been watching the youtube videos, but a question occurred to me.
Why aren't you running Eidolon of Countless Battles?

Posted: Thu Mar 13, 2014 2:51 am
by magicdownunder
Its a good question, the answer is in two folds:

1) it doesn't have hexproof
2) its a really expensive Ethereal Armor without first strike

I prefer Boon Satyr if I had to pick between them

- - - - - - -

I get asked about Eidolon of Countless Battles allot online as well (though most messages go like this: "I'm really disappointed that your playing Hexproof")

Fair enough, fair enough.

I'm a little disappointed too, mainly because I don't want to play against this deck, and you promoting it isn't helpful ;P

But it's a nice looking deck. Also abuses the metagame right now, with devour flesh seeing less play, with some b/x devo lists only running 2 main :P

The Esper Control MU may not be the best example, though the Esper Aggro/Midrange list does Verdict me in the first set of videos.

I run 4x Boros Charm and 2x Mending Touches for them ;-)

I didn't really hear your reasoning for wanting a Selesnya charm over the 4th skylasher btw?

is there any upside to the 2/2 with knight over the skylasher that cant be azo charmed? I figure youd even want one over a random enchantment because having a body under counterspell mana is probably the most important thing in that MU?

He was playing Esper control, so I was concerned about random "Terrors" which can kill slashers - with charms you can at least punch through tokens or produce a body in a pinch.

Posted: Mon Mar 17, 2014 12:30 am

Don't do it - GW is actually really good right now since Rw Burn is on the rise, I dislike the lack of Ajani in your list but beside that its solid (I'll go post in your GW thread soon).

Hexproof is ok, but you'll lose so many games just because the deck is inconsistency (not even 9 "scry" sources can help that) that said when you draw a humane hand nothing is going to stop you.

Posted: Fri Apr 11, 2014 6:54 pm
by InflatablePie
Although the scry sources may help with filtering, I feel like the deck can use something to help curve out since there's so many comes-in-tapped lands.

Something like extra shocklands, since you're running Fiendslayer and Unflinching Courage and don't care about life as much.

Hmm...

I plan on running this Friday for standard. Want some advice on the sideboard and my plans.

[deck]GW Hexproof[/deck]

I'm fairly confident in this deck's creature match ups, but control has always been a struggle for it. So, my idea has been to drop the hexproof/enchantment plan and become a flash aggro deck. All of the creatures will either have hexproof to make them hard to remove or flash to dodge sorcery speed removal.
So, something like this:

vs UW or UWB control
OUT: -4 Gladecover Scout, -4 Unflinching Courage, -4 Gift of Orzova, -1 Godsend
IN: +2 Advent of the Wurm, +3 Boon Satyr, +4 Mistcutter Hydra, +4 Skylasher

vs B/x Control
I'm not so sure on how to do this one. The hexproof plan seems stronger but they're going to be boarding in Duress/Lifebane Zombie and that's going to wreck my hand. If I can dump my hand fast enough, I can dodge that bullet but most of this deck is at 3 CMC so that's a bit of a challenge. Maybe something like...

OUT: -2 Holy Mantle
IN: +2 Banishing Light

So I can have 6 cards to take care of Desecration Demon (he's really the only problematic creature that they have). Still not sure on this one.

I'll feel bad posting the article so I won't do it, but deck list are usually freegame so here is his list ;-) :

[deck]Michael Jacob Naya hexproof[/deck]

The article was (surprisingly) good, he manage to justify his weird SB choices which is always good when you break away from usual choices.
