More and more, I realize I need to become a Judge. I've been talking with the local L2s, and apparently it wouldn't take long for me to reach L2 since I have most of the rules knowledge and have a firm grasp of most of the penalties/corrections.
I'd certainly like to be mailed a grand every couple months.
They don't mail judge promos. You get them in packets for judging at large events.
Becoming a judge is actually pretty tricky. Jabberwocky has been trying to pass the L1 test for a few months now, and he always has trouble because the way some of the questions are worded are really, really, REALLY fucking stupid.

As a former judge who dropped down to rules advisor since I never ran many tournaments, I agree completely with this statement. I do miss the promos, though.

Damn it. And they're so pretty. I imagine that this would backfire since a lot of people would want those lands and see this as shameless marketing.

Judges. Because those that can't play, teach.

I don't think the questions are stupid, I think the way they phrase them is horrific. You get asked stupid questions as judge all the time, but the difference between a ruling in person and answering on the test is that you can more easily assess the situation from a variety of different angles in-person, where on a test all you have are words.
I had a really hard time with my L1 test too, not because I didn't have a firm grasp on the rules, but because the semantics on those tests are unnecessarily obtuse.
Especially on the L1 test, it should be about your rules knowledge more than your ability to dance around archaic languages.

How many times do I have to say this, Maro said they are never doing another Kamigawa!
[Citation Needed]
I can't find the quote but the devs said they'd eventually return to every plane, though it was unlikely they'd revisit Kamigawa because it was a generally unpopular block

I actually know all this. One of my good friends is an L1 and when I go to events with her, I usually end up hanging out with all the L2s and such so I've gotten a decent grasp of how things work in there community.
And yeah, the questions are pretty fucking stupid. At Gp Sac, she was taking practice questions and while I would have gotten them all right if I where taking the test, I can see how it would trip up a lot of people.
And to get certain of the judge promos like the Force of will, you had to have been an L2 that certified and L1 in the last 6 months or something like that. I was also informed that the average time it takes to go from L1 to L2 is six months though depending on how good you are, it can be done in as little as 3.
For myself, I know I'll have to become an L1 at some point if I do open a game store, wether or not I would become an L2 is a different question because I'm very much a player and I imagine judging more
then playing while not miserable would be something I'd have a tough time doing.

You guys ever play draft and wonder, "how can this person's deck possibly be this stacked?"
Either this person cheated, or the people at his table just fed him everything.
Seven(!) Bounce spells... really?
I've discovered another reason to hate limited. The disparity between an average deck and a stacked deck os completely frustrating.

@Andy: I dunno, haven't checked the mail at my apartment in a few days, I've been out of town.
@Johnny: People cheat in casual REL limited all the time. If you think something is suspect, bring it up to your tournament organizer and they'll keep an eye on them in the future. There used to be this guy at the shop I worked at that seemed to ALWAYS pull at least one titan. After weeks of this repeated pattern, we eventually caught him. He was using his "draft sleeves" which already had all six titans sleeved up in the box.
Thanks dudes. I plan on doing nothing for my birthday. I might go to Publix and get a sandwich for lunch, that's about the extent of my plans.

Can you pass the rules advisor test? Did you read the JAR? Congratulations, you're ready to pass the L1 test (which IMO is easier than the RA test). A lot of the questions are phrased awkwardly because you'll get questions in a variety of stupid and obtuse manners in the real world and they want to lean toward 'technically correct' for phrasing for judges. Why? Because if a judge can't break it down to the point where everyone stopped paying attention, what's the point really?
In all seriousness, I'm probably the most active L2 judge in the world (if not, top 5 easily) and if anyone here has any particular concerns / questions just post them or PM me and I'd be glad to help. A good rule of thumb is that if you've been playing competitive Magic for more than a year or just a whole lot of small draft/standard events, you probably have the ground workings
to be an L1 almost immediately.

Dafuq? Isn't she kind of a central character? What other walkers have they killed off? I think Venser was one.

Elspeth died "off screen", according to someone talking about it elsewhere. Not sure what "off screen" means. I assume it means it was implied she died.

Heliod kills her. Apparently, they announced all this during last weekend's Pro Tour.
From the #1 spot of the Top 5 cards from the Pro Tour on the Mothership: "And on a weekend when it was announced that the character Elspeth perished on Theros, it was a fitting send-off that she did most of the slaying here
this weekend."
They even updated her wiki too:
http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/El ... y_into_Nyx
And, yeah, they've killed Venser. And I guess Urza too (well, technically, he gave his spark to Karn I believe).
