Yeah, the site was never much more than a bunch of collegiate performers hoping to cash in on high-speed internet; granted, they did it pretty successfully for the time, but holy shit did it crumble quickly. The word on the street was always that the actual That Guy turned into a money-grubbing bitch who basically assumed the people who wanted in on his channel wanted to work for 'notoriety' instead of actually getting paid, and if they didn't like it he wasn't shy at all about dropping the whole "well we don't need your content so go fuck yourself" line. NChick even wrote some sort of long dramatic rant on her blog about what a sexist bastard he was (with a heavy dose about bitching about being the subject of untold numbers of fanboy wetdreams, of course), but fuck if I'm gonna go actually seek out something that self-entitled twat bothered to write.
AVGN is back up and running, though, and he's still
got the magic. New videos come at a snail's pace* but he's still as entertaining as ever.
* - Actual Nerd videos, not the other ones like Board James or the Let's Plays with Mike Matei; when I have the time I still try to watch the other content, and I still find it entertaining in a buddy-sitcom kind of way, but I don't think anyone is under the impression they're supposed to replace the Nerd.
