Trust me, I know J.C.'s pain, as the deposed grey knight.

God, I wish he's contact me for advise.

Hey man, welcome

didn't even knew you still frequented magic boards, how's life?
I drop into MTGS on occasion, but I don't think I've posted outside of the Grrr thread in nearly a year. I saw my name came up in some CI thread recently about suggestion as an ombudsman over there or some position like that.

I'm doing pretty well. Grad school going well (conference papers getting accepted, first journal publication coming out next month), getting married this December too. Still not playing MTG, I've migrated to boardgaming at this point. Easier on the wallet, which
is important for grad students who own houses.

The resurrection of Netrunner is awesome, though. Scratches some of the same MTG itch with deckbuilding and whatnot.
Sup.

I feel your pain on the finances. I'm in my fifth year of a PhD program and my fiancee is starting hers in the fall. What're you studying?

The degree is in communication. My major research track right now is on advertising effects, particularly in video games.

Its awesome that your Ph.D program has a career track/employability statistics/program because this is what almost every Ph.D program lacks. Too many people go earn a Ph.D. with the illusion that they will get a place in academia, but it happens for 1 out of 4 people (I might even be generous here) and usually its at the age of 35-40 after you got infinite postdos up your sleeve, with awful pay.

Some even call it a Ponzi scheme since a successful professor is supposed to have directed 5 or more Ph.D's by the end of their career, so its easy to do the math.

I do believe this comment sums up pretty much not only the sentiment, but the thread as well and, really, the whole of life.
