It's funny because the comic sets you up to think that this guys must really like MTGS and value the opinion of the posters there if he's willing to record a podcast with nothing but their posts! But then, bam! Everything you thought you knew about this comic was wrong! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

... I actually liked it.

I think that you really want Chalice in the main deck as well as perhaps Trinisphere. Turn 1 Chalice is a beating against quite a few decks. I am not convinced that you need 4 Wurmcoil Engines. Most of the MUD decks also have a Cloudpost package but that might not be possible since you need red mana. Blood Moon can probably go to the sideboard given the number of basic lands I have seen in recent weeks. I don't know if you need the Top but that is a hard card to argue against in any deck.
My thinking was that you probably didn't wannt welder and chalice together in the main. When you side in chalice / trinisphere, you side out one drops. I could be completely wrong with this kind of thinking though.
you can play maindeck Cavern of souls to circumvent that ;)

We're planning on playing in Standard / Modern / Legacy Trios and I'm probably going to end up playing Legacy.

Want a deck that's:

A) Semi-competitive
B) Semi-cheap
C) I don't hate

That depends on what your staple count is like. Do you have Forces? Duals (which ones)? What can you source easily enough to get some reps in with?

Edit - Working with the base MUD deck before trying to add Welder might be wise. You will figure out which cards work best for you and what you can shave to make room for the new tech.

Personally, I will be playing (Cruise) Burn until I give up Magic most likely. Other good decks for newer Legacy players would be things like UR Delver, Maverick, Sneak and Show, or Death and Taxes. Avoid Miracles or combo decks like Elves or Storm unless you can get a lot of practice in.

Gives advice, plays burn in Legacy

You should play some number of daretti's if you want to play red in MUD.
I also saw lists running grove of the burnwillows/punishing fire.

Even worse: Plays burn in legacy with a deck that has so much shiny its pricetag rivals a lot of other Legacy decks.

I have been testing Cruise Burn as well. It seems like it might be a viable option. Cruise won me quite a few games that I would have lost if they were the Lava Spikes they replaced.

I have all shiny burn together, but I want my team to have a shot at winning.

MUD top 8'd the last GP, so it can't be horrible.

If I'm going to invest a tonne in legacy, I want to build a deck that fits the criteria above.

Legacy is a format where deck familiarity counts for an awful lot. Playing a deck you know is more important than all but the most extreme meta calls. D&T and Maverick are pretty well positioned right now. Delver is always an option and I am sure you will remember how to use a Bolt.

Black is not good anymore in midrange decks (jund, deadguy), since discard spells get crippled by treasure cruise.
The only way to play black is to pair it with blue or play fast combo.

Jund is okay, punishing fire is still really strong against small dudes, moreso when there is less goyf and mongoose to worry about

Just another blue deck :(
Why are you so averse to the color blue? There's only five colors to chose from, and ignoring one of them (the best one of them, even) severely limits your options as a competitive player.
