Am I the only one that thinks RW aggro is just a bad Mardu deck?

Yes.
You lose Butcher, Crackling Doom and freakin' Sorin for a more stable manabase? What am I missing? Is Hordeling Outburst even playable without Butcher / Sorin?

Butcher is a bad card imo... I think mardu is better off only splashing black for doom and thoughtseize

Hordeling Outburst is most definitely playable without Butcher and Sorin.
You're comparing apples to oranges. RW Aggro is a completely different deck. The main reason to play RW is, yes, the stable manabase which can support Chained to the Rocks.

Mardu plays chained to the rocks just fine. I just don't see the appeal.

I disagree, but to each their own.

Sounds like you just want to waste energy ripping on another deck archetype.

They play enough of the same cards (like 2/3 of the 75), and basically have the same curve (Seeker > Outburst > Chandra > Stormbreath vs Seeker > Outburst > Sorin > Stormbreath, which I'd argue is quite a bit better). Is 4 less cipt lands really worth it?

Consistency and reliability. It's not just about the curve (which, for the record, the decks is not designed to play out in a curve fashion like Boss Sligh or older aggro decks, FYI). It can play tempo with all the Burn spells (which also provide reach).
Tbh, it feels like playing old Boros Burn sometimes.
The sideboard also runs sweet things like Erase and Hushwing Gryff.

I've heard that RW is tearing up the meta in Japan from my friends there, but they're playing Ashcloud and Elspeth. Thoughts on those?

I'm willing to sleeve it and take it to my next FNM. Actually, I'll probably play in 2 FNMs on Friday in preparation for the PPTQ on Saturday / the real PTQ on the 10th. I'll try the Mardu Token deck in the first one and the RW deck in the second.
Testing is tech.

The deck is also pretty flexible, depending on how you want to sideboard. It can go way bigger by playing End Hostilities and Elspeth or just toolbox for things.

Ashcloud Phoenix is very good.

I can't help but feel like I'd want to update it to this:
[deck]Lands (25)
11 x Mountain
4 x Plains
2 x Wind-Scarred Crag
4 x Temple of Triumph
4 x Battlefield Forge
Creatures (16)
3 x Seeker of the Way
4 x Goblin Rabblemaster
3 x Brimaz, King of Oreskos
2 x Ashcould Phoenix
4 x Stormbreath Dragon
Spells (19)
4 x Chained to the Rocks
4 x Lightning Strike
4 x Stoke the Flames
4 x Hordeling Outburst
2 x Chandra, Pyromaster
1 x Elspeth, Sun's Champion
Sideboard
2 x Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
1 x Elspeth, Sun's Champion
4 x Hushwing Gryff
2 x Glare of Heresy
3 x Erase
2 x Scouring Sands
1 x Banishing Light[/deck]
Reminds me of the RW aggro deck MDU and I championed this time last year. That brings makes me ant to play it a lot actually...

Although we played Magma Jet as a four of last year... I wonder if it would still be good?

My R/W deck has been warped to fit my meta where I play FNM (15-2-3 for the month of December and good enough for a playset of promo Stokes

), but I wouldn't dare run this version at any bigger kind of event.
[deck]
Creature 17
4 Monastery Swiftspear
3 Seeker of the Way
1 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
2 Ashcloud Phoenix
2 Stormbreath Dragon
1 Purphoros, God of the Forge
Spells 20
4 Chained to the Rocks
4 Hordeling Outburst
3 Magma Jet
1 Erase
4 Lightning Strike
4 Stoke the Flames
Land 23
3 Plains
1 Mana Confluence
11 Mountain
4 Battlefield Forge
4 Temple of Triumph
Sideboard
3 Magma Spray
2 Scouring Sands
2 Hushwing Gryff
2 Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
1 Chandra, Pyromaster
3 Erase
2 Glare of Heresy[/deck]
My local meta is really just a bunch of little aggro and really fucking durdly decks, so I found something that exploits it.
If I were to bring this anywhere, I'd definitely cut things like the 1-drops and it would probably look more like the deck in Clownface's article from a few days ago.

I really hate the Heliod's Pilgrims. I think I'd switch those out for Ashcloud Phoenixes for sure.

I haven't tried him yet, but there's certainly been times where I wish I could've tutored up a Chained to the Rocks.

I didn't make it out to FNM at all in December

What's the January Promo?

Couldn't tell ya. I tried looking for it on WotC's site, but gave up before I punched a hole through my monitor.

I noticed you aren't playing Brimaz. Did you find it bad in your testing? I remember it played pretty badly with Butcher and that's why we dropped it from Mardu. Maybe it's ok in RW?

Yeah, I found that he was tough to cast on curve at times, since you really want to have [mana]RR[/mana] on T3 for Outbust.
Besides, just having 4 Rabbles and 4 Outburst is a lot of 3 drops as it is.
