synergies are often fine, especially as more and more cards in your deck have synergy with each other. But relying on synergies to make a bad card good is just bad magic. How many slots do you need to dedicate to the synergy to make sure you draw it? And at what point are you diluting your deck with otherwise bad cards? Just play good cards that stand on their own or play a deck that is almost entirely synergistic. Half-way to make a bad card good is just a pitfall.

Agreed. I wouldn't necessarily build around it, but instead include it in decks putting forth a strategy where it could just so happen to get maximum effectiveness from this card.

Agreed. Sometimes cards are bad so I don't put them into my deck.

It's like a pale shade of Spike Jester. I'm ok with that.

As others have pointed out, though,
Mardu Scout is a red 3-power, 2-drop
with no drawbacks, not even the color restrictions of
Spike Jester. And it's a common!
Granted, the Scout doesn't stick around if it's dashed out, but that's still a fairly awesome 2-drop.

I think it has potential. Put it in one of the brews in my most recent article. Don't know how fast the editor will have it up though.

Is new red 2-drop better than hellspark elemental ? Hellspark upsides were to offer some insurance against counterspells and non-exile removal. If mardu scout gets countered/removed, that's it. The advantage of course is that you can just choose to cast him normally and he sticks on the battlefield. I think i like hellspark better anyway.

Spike Jester didn't have trample either. Yet, in the Dos Rakis decks, there was rarely anything more satisfying than opening with Rakdos Cackler into Spike Jester on the play. The Scout's dash ability plays well with Foundry Street Denizen.
Go with Firedrinker Satyr into Mardu Scout into the Phoenix into Phoenix/Chandra/ into Dragon/Sarkhan. I'm also interested in Flamerush Rider. That's aggressive and on-curve, but a bit glass cannonish as it can get clogged by bigger creatures.
I like a black splash for Bloodsoaked Champion, Mardu Strike Leader, and Alesha paired with Mardu Scout, Flamewake Phoenix, Ashcloud Phoenix, and Sarkhan/Stormbreath. Lots of recursion for something like that.
Probably sucks, but it'd be fun and interesting to try out.

There was a difference in that token decks weren't really a thing when Spike Jester was at its best. At best there was Lingering Souls during INN/RTR Standard but it was rarely cast before turn two. Now you have people playing Raise the Alarm and gaining tons of life off Seeker triggers, Whip, and Siege Rhino which makes a 3/1 for RR pretty poorly positioned.

Yeah but "Dos Rakis" was not a deck, it was an FoS budg thing that literally had no results, articles, mentions or considerations for the entire time you guys played it
Spike Jester was on nobodies radar as a card with a viable deck

All joking aside, I do expect to start seeing aggressive devotion based strategies with Fanatic of Mogis as a curve topper to deal damage and recur the new phoenix.
