I'd play Skred before I'd play faeries.

The Mardu deck has potential, but needs work.

I'm just looking for a deck to get into modern with. Learning towards Twin atm, but was curious about Faeries. What makes it so bad? I'm clueless when it comes to modern.

It doesn't do anything unfair, nor kill people exceptional fast.

It's also REALLY mediocre without turn 2 bitterblossom.

Best deck to invest in depends on what type of decks you like/are good with.

I play affinity because it's an intricate agro deck and I like out-mathing my opponents.

If you like playing a very tempo oriented game, play twin, if you like grindy midrange, get some goyfs and lilis to pair with bobs and rhinos, if you like engine combo, storm is a tier 1.5 deck that's good enough to just steal wins, if you're into ramp, play tron or scapeshift. Modern's basically a slew of tier 2 decks, but there's enough play to the format where you can leverage playskill and smart mulliganing/sideboarding to play anything in the absence of pod and deathrite jund.

Faeries is one of those decks where if you're a die-hard Modern enthusiast who knows the meta game like the back of your hand you can have success at the local level. But the deck is generally considered bad because it lacks powerful cards. It attempts to play a longer game than UR Delver did but hurts itself at the same time with Thoughtseize and Bitterblossom, so each Remand and Cryptic Command and Mana Leak decision is super important, whereas in Delver you could fire off a Remand at almost anything because your clock was much faster and you could absorb more of your opponent's board state in your life total, and many of your cards acted as pseudo-bolts (or bolt itself) so you were more comfortable going through them.

I'm expecting Twin to make a large come-back with Treasure Cruise, Dig, and especially Pod banned. Storm is back to its pre-Khans builds, which means it's now tier 2 again, and Jeskai Ascendancy still hasn't gained the ground everybody thought it would. Which puts Twin and Scapeshift as the premier combo decks in the format in my opinion. Twin is also easier on a new player to the format because of the "oops, I win" factor.

Twin seems like a waaaaaaaaaay harder deck for a newer player to do well with as opposed to Shift. Shift you just play lands, play cards that get lands, and counter spells. Twin you actually have to interact most of the time.

That last sentence wasn't comparing Twin to Scapeshift, it was comparing Twin to Faeries, which was nme's two choices he posted. Sorry that wasn't clear.

That said, Valakut math is hard :sherlock:

Not on the hate alex bandwagon, but this post was ridiculous regarding the banned list:

"I don't agree that it should have been banned, banning one of the mana dorks that it played seems better. What other deck plays Wall of Roots for that much value? It slows the deck down in a lot of scenarios by an entire turn, which is more than enough to send it from "really really good" to "very very mediocre."

Was testing Soulfire Jeskai vs. Abzan agro. Cast the same lighting strike 5 times with soulfire grandmaster. Card is gas.

Just because the deck has a new card does not mean it needs a new name

I am on jeskai tokens for the next couple of weeks, treasue cruise is just too powerful not to play with. I have yet to test soulfire though, if I did put him in, it would be like two copies max. I am not yet sold on mentor, I have had a few occasions where I wasn't able to chain stokes. Currently I am running: 3 Seeker, 3 rabble, 2 Mantis Rider.

Any tips for combating Abzan Aggro? This seems sooo out of my favor, and not sure what the trick to combating it will be.

The Tier 2 part made me lol, but this is very good advice, LP. Especially since you didn't recommend Burn ;-)

I am curious how good Soulfire will be in the first couple of weeks.... The reason I still like seeker is the ability to swing through caryatid and courser, which I expect to be very popular the first few weeks.

I actually think the rebuy ability is more powerful than the lifelink.

Although can you just imagine the kind of damage a Satyr Firedancer and a Grandmaster could do together?

This is a very real difference and is better than the spell Lifelink, but the buyback might be better than this. Time and testing will decide, easy enough.

I just caught this. This is insane. I also don't agree with banning Birthing Pod, but suggesting a Wall of Roots ban is so funny. Alex is a very confused individual.

first off, wizards don't hack at the branches, they strike the root

secondly, even if they were to go after a non-pod piece, kitchen 'fun fucker' finks is much more egregious an offender than... wall of roots...

It'll be moderns survival of the fittest, card that is strong and will only get stronger given wizards wants to make creatures stronger and better, then in like 2-3 years a bunch of neck beards will want it unbanned so they can play squee again
