I played some test games with Molten Rain and liked it a lot post-SB. I played a match against fellow DTR member timmytaplands and found it quite effective against his UWR Control deck. We only had time for 2 games, but I think it was valuable.

It's really against UWR and Jund/Junk. Not so good against Pod and UR Delver. Mediocre against Amulet and Scapeshift if you can believe that.

Hmm, that's interesting. I would expect that buying a turn or two with Molten Rain would be all I need against Scapeshift. Luckily I haven't seen that deck in a long time. I think Pod is keeping it down.

They have so much ramp that it only delays them a turn at best. Nowadays, they can just do a mini scapeshift with courser to gain a bunch of life to hold out.

Ah, I didn't know they were running Courser these days. It's been a while since I've faced one, but I'm unlikely to have enough space in the SB to fix that matchup too.

Well, as long as you can beat the Baloths.

Don't have a problem with the Baloths, but they run Cryptic Command to bounce my Leyline. It's usually the counterspells that get me, because they have an instant kill after turn 6/7, whereas UWR takes many turns to beat me, letting me play around counters in a smart way.

I'm currently 1-1 in today's daily, having just gotten demolished by RG Tron AKA the bogeyman. I mulled to 3 in G1, then got steamrolled by T1 Expedition Map T2 Pyroclasm T3 Oblivion Stone T4 Karn exiling my Stony Silence, an Oblivion Stone board wipe, then a pair of Wurmcoil Engines into Emrakul.

Y U DO DIS TRON?

I stomped Naya Zoo though in round 1 though, which was good times.

It's times like this I think I should be playing BBBSG instead of Baby Boros. Infinite angel tokens don't care about your Wurmcoil Engine! :toot:

/blasphemy

I've been toying with a Naya list and have considered finally buying into Modern on MODO. I'm just waiting on the banlist announcement to make sure it will be well placed in the meta. I'll share it if you're interested. It's kinda cute and similar to what you're doing.

I've never played with Simian Spirit Guide, but it seems like a nice way to kick out a surprise Blood Moon.

Got a few 8-mans in this weekend with BBBSG. I played Goblin Rabblemaster in Blade Splicer's spot, and he alternately won and then lost me the final rounds of back-to-back events.

The losing round was particularly funny. I was up against Burn, and dude sandbagged a Deflecting Palm until I attacked with a 6 power Rabblemaster to kill me after triggers. Whoops!

Cool card though, I think I'll play a few in the SB against Bloom Titan, since they frequently get the double striking Primeval Titan going. Also Emrakul. Blood Moon isn't doing much for me lately.

I also goldfished a bit with Myth Realized in Baby Boros. I like it better than Figure of Destiny, and it both gives and benefits from Prowess triggers. It's pretty sweet.

[deck]Baby Boros[/deck]

I'll pick up a set of them when DTK is released on MTGO.

I made some tweaks to the Baby Boros deck and took it into a daily and an 8-man.

I went 3-1 in the daily, losing only to Twin after I got stuck on 2 mana in game 3. He had the counterspell and I couldn't cast another removal spell. I beat Skred, Tron and Burn along the way.

I won the 8-man vs. Jund, Burn and Skred.

Boros, Beats, Battlestar Galactica

Postby hamfactorial » Mon May 25, 2015 5:50 am

I took a look at mtgo-stats.com today and saw Burn, Twin and Delver at the top. That's the exact same metagame that inspired me to build Baby Boros, so I dusted it off and took it into a daily.

Here's what I ran

[deck]Baby Boros[/deck]

2-0 vs RG Tron
2-1 vs. Bogles
2-0 vs. Scapeshift
2-0 vs. Elves

I expected to face the meta at large, then managed to mow through all the decks that I thought I was shitty against.

Every match I've played against Collected Company decks was easy, I just control the board and get in with a pumped FoD.

You could hedge against it with Grafdigger's Cage or Torpor Orb, if you needed it.

Re. control, you have to play very differently. Against UWR at least, I often do nothing for 6+ turns until they start discarding or trying to burn me out. It's not a hard matchup, but you have to be very patient. Molten Rain and Volley help a lot.

Thank you Hamfactorial, seems like I need couple more training with this deck and against the company decks. But I realy like the style of this deck. Great build.

Against controll, you just sit there and draw and go?

How would you change the sideboars against a jund heavy meta? Thought about 2 mirran crusader in the sideboard instead 1 rending volley and the runed halo.

QR_BBPOST Thank you Hamfactorial, seems like I need couple more training with this deck and against the company decks. But I realy like the style of this deck. Great build.
Thanks!
QR_BBPOST Against controll, you just sit there and draw and go?
Yes, unless they've mulled down to a small hand size, I get through their soft permission spells (Mana Leak and Remand) by having enough mana to play multiple spells per turn or by sitting on a 2/2 Figure of Destiny and keeping 3 mana up forever so they can never Lightning Bolt it. UWR's win condition is multiple Bolt/Helix and a Celestial Colonnade hit, but we can easily survive those and Path the Colonnade when they start tapping out. They usually win when you try to curve out, since their counters are so efficient in the early game. Mana Leaks are shitty in the late-game, and so are Remands, so I just sit there until I can pay for Mana Leak or re-cast my spells after a Remand.
QR_BBPOSTHow would you change the sideboars against a jund heavy meta? Thought about 2 mirran crusader in the sideboard instead 1 rending volley and the runed halo.
To piggyback on what MDU said, you wouldn't be playing this deck against a meta with a lot of Jund, since Jund is a poor choice against a field of Delver/Burn. If, for some reason, you wanted to be better against Jund, you could manage with some small tweaks. Celestial Purge in the SB is good against heavy Liliana users (but so is Boros Charm). Lightning Helix is bad since they're slow and don't pressure your life total much, so you'd swap it for Molten Rain out of the board. You could also run Blood Moon, but I prefer more aggressive choices.

Auriok Champion is great vs. Jund, and if you're not playing against a lot of Burn, probably better in the 2-spot than Kor Firewalker.

Also you've got Leyline of Sanctity vs. heavy discard decks, which is effective vs. other stuff like Scapeshift.

It's not a bad matchup, we have a lot of tools against both Jund and Junk. Junk is the better matchup of the two, though. We have Path for the Goyfs and Siege Rhinos, Fallout for the Lingering Souls tokens, and Boros Charm to smack Liliana after a +1.

It's a simple thing to bring in a few Celestial Purges from the SB or to give some slots to Leyline of Sanctity in a heavy discard metagame.
