Sixty-four...
Honestly? I've played decks with >60 cards in them at large events on a few occasions. I played Solar Flare with 61 cards to 2011 States. I wanted an extra DoJ to deal with Township Tokens, so I just said YOLO and went for it. Ended up in the top 8, so yeah.
Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I freely admit to playing a card or two long at times, but I also recognize that it is generally a lack of decisiveness that speaks to my relative skill. I've just never seen a "long" deck (not counting things like Battle of Wits builds that call for it) on the leader board at a major event. In this case, I would have been too scared for mana variance, particularly with the black-heavy sideboad.

Build red out of your pocket, grind until you win packs, then trade into deck upgrades. Otherwise, bite the bullet and buy the deck you want outright and grind with it to make back your expenditure. Bots are the easiest way to acquire cards, and the reputable ones all stay pretty much with the "going" price on a given card. MTGO Traders is solid with very responsive service; if you use paypal with them they give you a 5% discount on everything. You can either buy cards outright from them at their website, or buy credits from them to use with their bots inside MTGO.

Interesting comment from Chas Andres in his latest article discussing Modern and the staples not appearing in MM:
"Thoughtseize is a glaringly obvious omission, and it will be corrected shortly. There is a strong rumor going around that it will be reprinted in M14, and I believe it. If it isn't in M14, it'll be in Theros for sure. I expect Thoughtseize to be a regular rare—not a mythic—meaning it will settle in the $30 range. Please do not pay $75 for this card right now."

Trip was less awesome then I wanted it to be. 4/3 drop(1-3 in actual games played). Didn't get to snort coke off of a hookers ass. On the plus side I showed fate and his hotty girlfriend the almighty power of zealous conscripts. Wish my phone had been on so I could coordinate better. As it was, still got wasted last night and saw my bros go on an emotional rollercoaster as they won and lost e everything on roulette . That and at least one of my team made day two.

Cirque was awesome.

I'm now up $1,200 and some change. Sat at the tables until the last second before the show and had to run my ass there.
Supposed to meet up with Fate and Nuwen but the girls are dragging me back to the apartment to draft the C/UC cube and drink some more. Sorry dudes. This night still has the potential to go into Hangover mode. Or I could just pass out in some strange girl's bed. To be continued...

I get the impression that a lot of folks were underwhelmed with the tourney once they got past the impact of its magnitude. It seems like pull quality was a huge factor, as I know a number of skilled players like yourself who got blanked by non-cohesive card pools. Out of curiosity
given the magnitude of the event, what safeguards were in place to prevent people from "importing" supplements? I know it's Vegas, but I don't imagine the security was casino-level...
I would have liked to have seen the art display, but not at the cost of having to deal with the crowd.

'morning, all.
We took the kids over to Oceans of Fun on Saturday afternoon. Never again on a weekend. People everywhere to the point that it was just too much. It upset us when we saw parents turn their kids loose in the kids' areas without supervision. I saw one little girl get knocked down when an older girl ran up one of the kids' slides with her mother sitting less then five feet away. The attendant warned her against it, and as soon as his back was turned, she did it again. We left soon afterwards.
I have several things to look forward to this week: grading more assignments, working on the car to convert the air shocks to springs, and going to court on Friday for the criminal trial of my ex. What fun.
I'm hoping to talk my in-laws into watching the toddler on Friday, so I can at least go to FNM and get some playing time in.

That's why I don't go to the Six Flags amusement park in Vallejo. Too many people, and when you get such a large cross section of the population you are bound to have classless people who can't or won't handle their own kids. It's sad to see just how many parents don't care about their kids' behavior.
Anywho, so I haven't played a game of Magic in over a month. Really hoping to go to a GPT this Saturday. I'm not even really concerned about winning, I just want to play and see what's going on in my local meta. I think I can expect to see a lot of control and reanimator.

I haven't played a game of Magic in two weeks and that streak could continue indefinitely. Trying to move in a 4000 sq ft house and update it at the same time is a real pain.

The tourney wasn't really bad, it's just that I was disappointed in my performance, and I possibly misbuilt my deck. I was playing a fair G/W deck with a black splash and tromp, and what I should have done is either gotten greedier or tried to force a more aggressive deck instead of playing my "safe" build.
As for safeguards, you would crack packs and register the pool, then pass the cards to the left. Lots of people dropped after cracking the packs as you don't really want to pass tarmagoyf+foil tarmogoyf.

There is a GPT at Outer Planes Comics and Games in Santa Rosa this Saturday at noon, I believe.
They're also hosting an SCG IQ the very next Saturday.

I'm going to see if I can break out of "jail" for a few hours to participate. I've never entered a Competitive REL event before. Do I just get a decklist template from Wizards?
Posted: Mon Jun 24, 2013 9:36 pm
by hamfactorial
At a competitive REL event, the official judge staff should have the deck registration forms printed out for the participants. It's helpful to sort your deck before arriving to make the registration really simple.

by Self Medicated
I see. But can you bring your own form already filled out just to save time?

My deck is aggro, and quite odd. Prepare your butthole, Santa Rosa!
