I would say that looks pretty solid. I still think that 21 land is too much but I bow to those who play versions with fetchlands and to tournament results. My only suggestion may be drop one land, go to 10/10 and add the 4th vortex, but test before committing.

a fellow grinder mentioned "Stone blade, delver variants, miracles, and show and tell" will be very popular. Would there be a way to someone hedge the main deck without weakening it?

Posted: Tue Mar 18, 2014 8:03 pm
by BlakLanner
I wouldn't. We are pretty well set up to win game 1 vs the fair(er) decks, Miracles is always going to suck, and our only defense to an early Sneak and Show is Ensnaring Bridge which we don't want main.

[deck]
4 Grim Lavamancer
4 Goblin Guide

4 Lightning Bolt
4 Chain Lightning
4 Lava spike
4 Price of Progress
4 Flame Rift
3 Sulfuric Vortex
4 Fireblast
4 Rift Bolt

9 Mountains
12 Fetches

SB
3 Ensnaring Bridge
4 Pyroblast
3 Mindbreak Trap
2 Smash to Smithereens
3 Searing Blaze
[/deck]
So after testing the above list last night. Some initial thoughts are that Grim in multiples is weak, and I seemed to be prone to flooding. Inital thoughts were to -1 Grim Lava Mancer -1 Fetch.

Chatted with PSully about the list some, he mentioned he seems to be shying away from creatures, as he found himself always siding them out. I asked what his predictions were meta wise for the Invitational and this was his repsonse, "BUG/Esper/UWR/RUG/SnS "

[deck]
3 Grim Lavamancer

I now have two SB slots open, possibly Vexing Shusher to maybe help with Miracles?

Now you're learning, Purp. ;)

It's all about proper metagaming in Legacy if you want to pilot Burn correctly.

I think Pyrostatic Pillar is your best option for that slot. Shusher will help against Miracles but I don't know if it really is going to be enough because Terminus.

Pillar good vs miracles, storm and even mirror..worth bringing it in elsewhere?

Great against Elves and probably High Tide. Reasonable against just about any "fair" blue deck since they all play ponder/brainstorm/etc.

So, so far the discussions on this thread have been about whether 2 certain cards should be in the main or board, rift and searing blaze (a decision that's entirely meta based, therefor no one here can help you) and the other topic up for debate is the number of lands (i.e. 19-21) which there's a simple answer to, it doesn't matter. You're playing burn, and therefor will undoubtedly go 0-X drop and go play edh. This entire thread is irrelevant. You're counting to 20. All other decisions that will need to be made are either so non-consequential they shouldn't even be brought up on this forum or its based on your local meta/perceived meta (a perceived meta that you as an individual have to predict based on prior experience and instinct) This thread should take a new direction, "Why to not play burn"

I'll start.

CONS

1) Its bad
2) Its win record is actually horrible despite what the original poster
stated.
3) Its gets outclassed by every other deck playing red
4) Cat tribal is simply better (if you get that joke, good for you)

PROS

1) Its dirt cheap
2) ????
3) Profit

If you're on burn simply because its what you can afford then I'm sorry for you, but you're going to lose till you get a job or friends to led you cards.

I'm gunna go ahead and leave now. Have fun counting to 20. I know it may be hard for some of you but i have faith none of you will be able to make it that high.

I think that's a terrible idea.

Ok, maybe it was.

I lost to t1 dredge and a elves deck last night.

Posted: Fri Mar 21, 2014 2:03 pm
by Khaospawn
To be fair, the creatures aren't good in the Dredge matchup and Guide is pretty terrible against Elves. But the Lavamancer does do some work versus Elves.

Dredge is just all around bad for burn anyway. Game 1, we're a huge dog and Game 2 isn't much better unless were using a ton of hate.

With Elves, you pretty much just try to hide behind a bridge and point everything to the face, trying to kill them before they can kill you.

All of this just goes to show how terrible Burn is vs Combo decks, unfortunately.

Posted: Fri Mar 21, 2014 4:10 pm
by BlakLanner
Actually, creatures are essential to the Dredge fight. Killing off your own is the only way to get Bridge out of their graveyard if you haven't found your graveyard hate. Losing T1 is just something that happens from time to time though.

I didn't know that

Posted: Fri Mar 21, 2014 5:43 pm

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. It's been awhile since I've played against Dredge. But sometimes you don't even get a chance to do that.

Posted: Fri Mar 21, 2014 5:50 pm
by BlakLanner
This is true. When they T1 you it is pretty much have a Leyline of the Void or die.

@Purp, Blak and Spawn: If your a Pauper, Standard and Modern burn player would getting into Leg. burn be difficult?

Posted: Sat Mar 22, 2014 9:29 am
by LaZerBurn
No :)

This thread has re-kindled my interest so I'll most likely get the 4 Fetches (Bloodstained Mire) and the Vortex's I need to play again - I only sold mine off (at a profit) a few weeks ago! I like the fixed meta and once I'm as familiar as Khaos and Blaklanner it'll be great to have another format to burn people in :)

Also there are some good posts in the MTGS thread so it's worth wading through for info :)

@Purp, Blak and Spawn: If your a Pauper, Standard and Modern burn player would getting into Leg. burn be difficult?
Not at all. Obviously, the deck wouldn't play any fetches, but it'd still work. I think the only "expensive" cards would be Goblin Guide and Chain Lightning, right?

Posted: Sat Mar 22, 2014 11:58 am
by magicdownunder
I think Chain's was dirt cheap (I have them in my Pauper deck) guide's are expensive but I have them in my modern deck so the main cost will be the fetch lands (which don't prick you) and getting beating 10-1000's times before I learn the meta.

Lucky for me this forum is filled with tech savvy people, so I'll just wait till you guys upload more videos before I give Leg. a shot.

Chains are about $14 in paper, last I checked. Overall, not that pricey in the overall scheme of things. You can probably build a fetchless version for about a hundred bucks methinks.

Posted: Sat Mar 22, 2014 5:54 pm
by BlakLanner
My fetchless has a retail of about $300 with sideboard. Ensnaring Bridges aren't cheap.

Really? I own 7.

Posted: Sat Mar 22, 2014 7:31 pm

Yeah, they are going for over $20. Bothers me that I didn't get any last year when I started to acquire Modern cards.

Cool. I wonder if my foreign Stronghold bridges are worth more.

Hell, if anyone is playing with fetches, isn't a set of Tarns alone pushing close to $400? I don't even want to know what my 75 is worth. I'd be too tempted to double sleeve it or something.
